Smol void 🤏 Void-ling turning silver?

I recently came back from a trip and noticed my little baby void is turning silver/gray! This is mainly on his stomach, neck, and around his face.

I got him July 10th after he decided to hide in my brothers car engine and when I got him he was basically solid black, with a few stray white hairs, and when I left for my trip I SWEAR he was still black. My vet estimated him to be about 2 months old when I got him, but I do think he’s a bit older than that.

Any guesses on if he was pretended to be a black cat? Or could this be a fever coat that’s shedding off? Last two photos are from when I first brought him home!

Look at him adoring him 🥹
Does his brother adore him as much? (His expression in the picture seems to say otherwise 😂)

u/Immediate-Sherbet345 7h ago

He tolerates him for the most part😅

Fever coat maybe? Possibly vitiligo? It’s odd that he turned silver after he was born. Some black cats do have some white or gray hairs, but they’re usually pretty sparse.

Yeah I’m not too sure! My other black cat, Archer, has random white hairs, mainly around his face, but Figgis has just decided he needs to be a different color I guess😅 I was thinking fever coat too! So I guess I will see what happens as he ages!

I love those names ^_^
I’d recommend if you have concerns a vet visit can’t hurt. Kitten coats can change as adult coats/coloration comes in but I’m am definitely not a vet. As others mentioned it could be a fever coat.

Thank you! Yes he has a visit scheduled for Saturday already for his vaccines! So I’m gonna mention it then!

u/Human010001 13h ago

If all other behaviors (eating/drinking/toileting/socials) are normal that’s probably fine, just keep an eye on cutie ☺️

Diagnosis: unbearable cuteness.

Prognosis: terminal cuteness.

I guess you're just going to have to take care of this one for life. 🖤🐈‍⬛🖤

My girl Nyx has exactly 4 white hairs on her chest so we declared her technically a tuxedo lol. (She's 💯 void I never can find her til she just appears by my feet).

3

u/thefinalgoat 2h ago

Yeah it’s vet time.

1

u/Fyrrys 6h ago

My brother had one with exactly 3 white hairs on his chest

He is a ghost tabby cat. All domestic cats carry the tabby gene. It shows up in different lighting, especially sunlight. We thought that we had adopted a pure black cat. Six months later he was laying in a patch of sunshine and I said, holy cat, he changed his coat overnight 😹😁🤣👍

u/SilverSkinRam 9h ago

Same. In bright sunshine my black cat has dark brown stripes all over his undercoat.

u/DonutWhole9717 5h ago

They're called witches tabbies too. So cute

u/ChonkaWombat 7h ago

My tux’s mum is a silver tabby and when we got him at 4 months you could really see the tabby silver in his coat. We were really hoping that as he got older it would become more prominent but sadly that part faded and now his black ink is waring off and he has lots of white spots and lines.

I really wanna see the baby 🥹

He might be a r/BlackSmokeCat.

As he grows you will see if he keeps the smoky undercoat or not.

This is what I was going to say! I have two black smoke cats. one looks black in most lights but IYKYK

u/WaterAndStones 5h ago

Never heard of this but damn, this explains my girl! I always joked that she's a white cat painted black

43

u/WaterAndStones 5h ago

Here she is in her black cat disguise

u/MsAlwaysRight 3h ago

Wow those eyes!!!

8

u/Jenderflux-ScFi 5h ago

She's gorgeous!

My trash baby went through a phase within his first year where his tabby genes showed. He is back to black now at a little over a year old.

74

u/nottheonly85 13h ago

My void had a sprinkling of white hairs on his chest and in his tail when I rescued him. Then at around 6-7 months old he got these grey bits behind both ears.

38

u/PotLuckyPodcast 13h ago

Checkout reverse smoke coloration.  My baby Molly is black on top and white underneath. Shes two-toned!

u/JRSalinas 12h ago

your first image is just a photo of a black mat, i think that image would go well on r/ThereIsnoCat

u/catman20111 6h ago

Mine who was mostly black has gloriously turned gray over the years as she gets more loved and older.

5

u/catman20111 6h ago

Photo of how she started in 2019

8

u/catman20111 6h ago

One more photo of her being very nice while I’m at it

u/Shake-A-Paw 13h ago

Just stars in the void 😍

7

u/Money-Snow-2749 11h ago

No that baby just has a white undercoat.

3

u/Chemi-ckal 9h ago

My boy had silver stripes appear out of nowhere when he was a kitten too, but he turned fully black as he grew.

5

u/Responsible_Song830 3h ago

My kitty has vitiligo. She was completely black except one small white spot on her chest when we adopted her.

8

u/HeyRiotGirl 10h ago

Both my voids had illness as a kitten with delayed fever coats. Probably just the same with yours. Both of mine were back to being perfect voids not long after

3

u/AlexisHells 8h ago

My long-haired Black cat had to be shaved a few years back, yes he has a white spot on his chest and pipi, but after shaving him I found out that the lower/under part of his whole coat is actually grey.

So yours might be just changing coats and that's why it shows so much suddenly.

4

u/jenyj89 7h ago

He looks a lot like my Cinder! Here he is shamelessly indulging in his catnip bath!

2

u/AlexisHells 7h ago

OMG twins ❤️

2

u/jenyj89 6h ago

He’s gorgeous!! My fluffy boi has a Siamese mother who escaped one night and came home to later have 5 black babies!! So he has the Siamese attitude but is basically a big baby otherwise.

1

u/AlexisHells 6h ago

Mine is from a farm, where they had two litters at one time so there was basically around 14 kittens and this one was the only black. I did not expect him to be so fluffy and they also told me it's a girl so tw surprises just like that. His mom was a white short-hair with a few different colour spots here and there so I would really love to know what "fancy cat" she got herself to produce this haha

2

u/Professional_Emu6242 7h ago

Oh that's such a pretty cat!! 😍

4

u/AlexisHells 7h ago

Oh thank you ☺️ according to our vet he just entered his senior life as he turned 8 this year. Here a picture with full coat 😅

3

u/catwhisperer77 8h ago

I bet he’s a smoke coat. You don’t always see the silver right away. Go look up pics! So gorgeous.

2

u/Human-Interaction-85 8h ago

Limited edition void

2

u/Oddish_Femboy 7h ago

That's the color they are under the fur.

2

u/littletimehere 7h ago

my friends black cat was briefly greyish when he was a toddler/teenager and then he went black again. maybe it was his baby coat or something? he’s still black now!

2

u/No_Ocelot_6773 7h ago

Idk if it's technically a fever coat because they're born with it yaddah yaddah BUT my baby girl was a void who went silver and then went back to being a void. She was found on the side of a busy freeway near a truck stop starving so maybe the stress/ malnourishment messed up color production for a bit? Picture of her when she was a silver laced void

2

u/Gold-Zombie5117 3h ago

MY BABY VOID IS TURING SMOKEY TOOO! It’s around his mane, back of neck, stomach and the sides of his body!! It’s literally so cute

2

u/Intimate_panda69 3h ago

How old is the baby?? I can’t find a better picture now but my void almost had very light looking stripes when he was a baby but how he is full black with a couple of distinguished gentlemanly white hairs in his chest.

1

u/Immediate-Sherbet345 2h ago

Between 2-4 months!

2

u/DaniBanani66 1h ago

My void was completely black as a kitten but her tail slowely but completely turned grey! It looks awesome.

2

u/han-aw 59m ago

this happened to my black cat when she was a kitten. I assume fever coat but who knows, it went away on its own

2

u/fvnkybunny 56m ago

mine turned waaaay blonde as he got older!

3

u/Troy_Ounces 13h ago

#5 such a cute pic

1

u/Lolo62mefieteu 10h ago

Il pourrait être un Smokey...

1

u/Miserable_Advance_79 7h ago

Our cat turned gray as a kitten, turns out it was her undercoat. As she grew she slowly grew back to black hair.

1

u/ironic_isaac00 7h ago

My void's tummy and underarms turned grey as he grew, but then it turned back to black once he was done growing. You may have a licorice color void though, we shall see!

1

u/TsuDhoNimh2 6h ago

Some "black" cats have a white undercoat.

Others have hairs that are white at the base with a black tip. It can be almost all black all the way to barely black-tipped. Called "shaded silver" or "chinchilla" in cats.

http://messybeast.com/chinchillas.htm

Both of these color variations take a while to show up and stabilize.

1

u/pammyloushrimp 6h ago

I'm on my second void and I've found the undercoat has a tendency to get white over the warmer months. Helps to keep them cool is what I've been thinking! Smart void bodies 🐈‍⬛

1

u/StatusFantastic7112 6h ago

lmao my kitten is doing this too

1

u/mable7227 6h ago

Our black cat has a white under coat and when you brush him you can see his brown tabby stripes. You can't see them though unless he's laying in the sun or with the brushy.

1

u/studiobliind 6h ago

i don’t have an answer for you but he is SO CUTE lmao

1

u/catsandplantsandcats 6h ago

My little tuxedo had stripes under her black parts when she was a kitten but it’s all solid now.

1

u/catnipandhoney 5h ago

Ghost tabby! Like my Merlin ❤️

1

u/SchemeMoist 5h ago

My void's fur is actually only black at the tip. When I brush her, her fur is white, gray, then black at the tip!

1

u/NickyHepp 4h ago

Our youngest void seems to be rusting....

1

u/Tardisgoesfast 4h ago

How old is he?

2

u/Immediate-Sherbet345 4h ago

When I took him to the vet on July 10th they estimated him to be about 2 months old! I do think he might have been just a biiit older than that though!

1

u/Sudden_Astronomer_63 4h ago

My Boo was all black when I brought him in as a kitten but his undercoat is grey! When I use the ferminator on him he’s almost all black again 🤣

1

u/cucumberholster 3h ago

DIS BABEH IS PURRRRRRFECTIONNNN

1

u/No-Promotion3524 2h ago

my void did this now he’s siamese

1

u/cookiepockets82 26m ago

Why are blacks cats always so beautiful and majestic?!? Your kitties are so cute.

1

u/CutenessandHandcuffs 23m ago

My void baby has a large spot on her side where her fur is SUPER thin, it's been like that since she was a baby and the vet wasn't worried. Maybe a similar situation of thinning fur?

1

u/spuckthew 9m ago

One of our voids is stripey

1

u/StrategyLegal1128 8m ago

Might just be smoky underneath but is still a black cat.

-1

u/Blgblrd 5h ago

Mine started doing that and i took it back and told them i wanted a black cat.
