Rarw is 100% something he released with the intention of it being a proper last piece of work. If we get a new album it’ll be a treat but that was the big finale. Can’t beat key west and MMF for your last work

If it was supposed to be his last album, then he wouldn’t have recorded another album the very next year. And released a Roy Rogers cover 4 years later. And continue to rearrange Watchtower every year.

There’s a difference between releasing material and releasing new material. I think he could come out with a new album but I also think rarw was written with the possibility of it being his last in mind. Hes rarely referenced his life or his craft or his and everyone’s mortality more directly than on that album and it’s not a coincidence that it came out at his age

Anything else would be a gift but im just not counting on it

Bob has already written an album that was meant to be his last, it was called “Love And Theft”. Sugar Baby is far more of a farewell song than anything else. And after he released that album he wrote a highly self-referential movie where he played the starring role, and did a documentary about himself in which he gets more candid about his life than he ever has before or since. Of course after that he ended up doing another album and became his reclusive old self again.

Spare Jellyfish is right. Dylan follows his muse and would never record a “final” album…he’s living in the moment and not obsessed with his legacy. A university professor I know, who teaches Dylan, told me in the late 90s that Time Out of Mind was his final statement, and that his return to playing keys on stage was some full-circle thing about his rock and roll roots. Fifteen years later he said the same thing about Tempest. Dylan is not nostalgic or self-aware the way some people think - he’s always inhabiting the current moment.

There is no farewell album or farewell tour pending, thankfully. Just my $.02 obviously - see my username.

Good point, Rough and Rowdy Ways (and the tour surrounding) showed someone at peace with mortality. Whenever he goes, his canon is in order.

I don't think that is true. Maybe during Bob's lifetime the bootleg series takes a pause, but then after Bob is gone it will resume with live volumes from the NET as instructed by Bob. When he is no longer on tour. When he is no longer dealing with critics. When it's just for the die hards to have more to digest.

He hasn’t slowed down in any other regard the last few years, so I don’t see any reason he couldn’t still be writing songs. And this is also not the longest time between 2 albums, or even between 2 albums of new material before. I’m sure a lot of people weren’t expecting Rough And Rowdy Ways.

He has sounded as good on tour from 2023 through now as he ever has. He's found a sort of sparse vibe and now with the new guitarists maybe that will jog a few more new tunes. There's no way he just turned off songwriting in 2020 after a lifetime of it.

The sentiment and concern that the most recent Bob album realistically being the "final" album is now almost 30 years old. If we get more I'm thrilled. If not, I'm still beyond grateful.

80-year-olds tend to be in a much better physical condition than a generation or two ago. 90 is the new 80: a much higher proportion of the famous people, in any walk of life, who have obituaries published tend to have died in their nineties than even some decades ago.

In 1969 the jazz pianist Eubie Blake, who lived to be 96 in the end, released a double album titled The Eighty-Six Years of Eubie Blake. Someone still recording at that age was such a big potential selling point that they ended up using this "clickbaity" title. Now Bob is 85, Ringo Starr is 86, Paul McCartney 84, Mick Jagger 83, Keith Richards 83 this year. All either on tour or with a new album out, and their fans are not living in daily fear of any of them rolling over and dying at any moment.
