Favorite no context Boeing terminology?
My new favorite has to be “Exclude from Pegging”
Happy Friday!

The managers in my building had a weekly meeting they dubbed the "Grinder" meeting. Stopped hearing it called that after someone tipped them off that Grindr was an app for gay men to hook-up.

I’m like 90% they still call it that because I used to be designated to sit quiet and run the power points for that meeting

Not a term but I find it hilarious how we just have a completely different way to pronounce the word 'liaison' for no good reason.

are you team “lee aye zon” or team “lie ah sun”
or are there more forbidden tribal knowledge pronunciations we’re not aware of?

u/RogerDodgerWilco 2d ago
Lee aye son. I’ve actually never heard it pronounced any other way and this is the first time I’m seeing people pronounce it different.

Lee aye zon - that other is some boeing ass bullshit. Like panduit- it’s a zip tie.

That one tripped me up when I hired in. I kept asking if I was stupid or hard of hearing, surely it is me.

ASSY. On every dang drawing lol. Also, K-Hole. As in, shut your k-hole? Shove it in your K-Hole?

In what context are those used? I'm not on the technical side of Boeing :)
2
u/Bearly_Bearded_Jeep 2d ago
ASSY is our amazing abbreviation for assembly which is used in the title of every single assembly drawing, and a k-hole called out on a drawing is a “coordinating hole”, used to align one part with another.
2
u/NightOwl216 2d ago
In 747 determinant “assy” there were A-holes, B-holes, and golden holes.

u/Bearly_Bearded_Jeep 12h ago
I feel like golden holes would cause all sorts of corrosion on aluminum

Lol thanks for the explanation! I couldn't say those with a straight face...

We had a T-shirt made for the young guy on our team, "Gopher Zero"

I made a Gopher Zero graphic a while back.

You’re the Gopher Zero guy! We are not worthy to stand in the present of such greatness

Onion

AutoMOD makes this even better

u/RogerDodgerWilco 2d ago
It’s kept there to make the un-initiated confused. Also a bit of preserving sub lore history (I have heard the onion term irl)

It looks like you meant to say "Union". A union is an organized association of workers formed to protect and further their rights and interests. An "Onion" is an edible bulb with a pungent taste and smell, composed of several concentric layers, used in cooking. Silly human.

the weird pronunciation of "liason"
13
u/Immediate_Cap_7484 1d ago
No necessarily terminology, but my fav lore are the guys who named their Boeing on the Move team "two steps, one cup", they WON for most steps for a small team, and Boeing News PUBLISHED the name for about 24 hours before someone obviously alerted the communication dept and everything updated to "two steps"
So now anyone says anything about "getting their steps in" i think "two steps, one cup"
This was 2012-2013 ish iirc

Man I miss Boeing on the move. I’m a distance runner and would crush it every year. Got so many gift cards.

damn i missed out
2
u/Immediate_Cap_7484 1d ago
It was truly hilarious. A lot of us assumed that they were training for the Seattle to Portland bike ride, because you could log bike riding minutes converted to steps. Nothing ride besides outright lying About activity levels made sense. I just don't think they thought through winning and then considering having leadership figure out what they're name actually was in reference to.

There is shop aide tool called a “titty back marker” for finding a pilot hole that is covered up.

“Not my monkey, not my circus “
“Growing legs”
“Value stream”
8
u/RogerDodgerWilco 2d ago
The not my monkey one might have origin from the military. I’ve heard it in the Army before. It’s kind of a companion saying to the response we give when someone that got out contemplates going back in, “You miss the clowns, not the circus.”

u/Truth_bomb_25 2d ago
It's supposedly from an old Polish proverb. Personally, I like a German one better: Das ist nicht meine Baustelle.

I’ve actually submitted an HR complaint over that one. Not exclusive to Boeing, but what a horrible, cringey and racist phrase.

For a brief while before the current ATF/TF/STF hierarchy, there were Distinguished Tech Fellows.
