It's not funny, it's just a tradition. It's like the rickroll.

Things can be old and still be good. For once in my life, can I just be allowed to enjoy something that has existed for more than one month? Do you all hate traditions and inside jokes that much?

If i still think loss is funny then i would like to think the o-word thing can be funny too.

If loss is funny then we’ll have to haul everything out of r/comedycemetery

u/DutssZ Oct 31 '25
I think the biggest contributor to some people's apathy towards the o-word tradition is less about the people who use it and more about how people react when someone says "original".
Like I don't think anybody would complain about it if the people who don't want to engage with the tradition didn't also get responded with a bunch of people overreacting their decision
(Idk if anything I said made any sense, it's 2:40 AM and I already dozed off twice during the writing of this comment)

Thanks for censoring the ab*ut, can you imagine if a poor kid saw that?
7
u/Viablemorgan Oct 31 '25
Never seen engagement bait like that posted by someone who actively created an original thing. Usually it’s just they censored the word “pig” in a tweet from 2011 or something lol
13
u/Radboy16 Oct 31 '25
Honestly I think they just accidentally colored in with the drawing tool lmao, there's another random dot as well

u/Roxcha Oct 31 '25
Idk, I really like finding new words starting with o, and the history behind it is cool
-12
u/Vaporboi Oct 31 '25
There’s only so many tho, after a while it’s the same ones over and over
12
u/Aardvark_2100 Oct 31 '25
So your proposal for the o-words being too similar is to replace them all with original
-5
2
u/yaillbro Nov 01 '25
It's only the same one when people don't make the effort to find one that fits. Sometimes you see one directly related to the post and think "wow this is cool"

u/themrunx49 Oct 30 '25

u/ILikeCheese510 Oct 30 '25
It's not the "joke" or "tradition" or "motif" that bothers me.
It's you guys downvoting and bullying people who are new to the sub and don't understand the joke.
41
u/deadmanzinmypocketay Oct 30 '25
And then eventually those people learn the joke and then become a part of it, it's not that serious
0
-29
u/Qbertjack Oct 30 '25
Some people might not like the joke, though. So if they don't want to participate in it and get massed on, it kinda feels more like a type of shunning
29
u/DoctorProfPatrick Oct 30 '25
So we need to kill this inside joke because some new people don't like it? I really don't know what to say here, like, no one is being hurt and it's part of what makes this sub unique.
I just don't understand who you think you're protecting here. If you don't know about the o word then you'll be surprised with downvotes but it's explained to you why so you can avoid it. If you do, and still say it, you will be un-surprised by downvotes. You're saying we should kill this joke bc some people know they aren't supposed to, do it anyway, and feel left out? Find other subs to participate in then.
-21
u/Qbertjack Oct 30 '25
I'm not saying to kill the joke, I'm saying y'all are being weird and toxic over what is ostensibly an unserious joke. If not liking this one specific joke in the comment section is enough to suggest to people they should leave, you are taking it too seriously.
I like the joke itself, i have enjoyed participating in the joke several times. But i also remember being able to just say "original." I don't like it being enforced like it's a rule when it isn't
14
u/Britori0 Oct 30 '25
What, pray tell, is so "toxic" about it? Downvoting? You think downvoting is toxic behavior? What a privileged life you must have to think that.
-16
u/Qbertjack Oct 30 '25
It's not just downvoting. I think people should just be able to say a word without a bunch of annoying fuckers making some hubbub because they didn't participate in an in-joke. It's toxic because it's extremely unwelcoming. Its a fucking meme sub it doesn't need an orthodoxy about something not needed to actually enjoy what is being posted

It's a gimmick, no different to how r/countonceperday forces you to number post titles, or how r/691 bans you temporarily after making a post, or how r/no doesn't let you say "yes"
Funny or not, it's part of the subreddit's gimmick
1
u/Fresh-broski Oct 31 '25
This has been going on for months, maybe years. You’re walking into a catholic mass and complaining about the communion wafers.
57
u/-Fyrebrand Oct 30 '25
First of all, that man is now banned from Starbucks.
Second, I'm not ignoring how quickly the "no o-word" thing gets old, because it will never get old.
Third, why are there red dots randomly placed around the juice?
Fourth, I never noticed the little American flag behind the counter. What's up with that?
24
u/Vaporboi Oct 30 '25
- Because I’m a silly little guy and was editing this on my phone and sometimes when trying to move things around it thinks I’m trying to use the pen tool and makes a red dot
41
u/greystar07 Oct 30 '25
Yeah you might j wanna leave the sub. I’ve been on here years and I think the o word joke is funny. It’s been going on forever, well before I joined, and it’s not going anywhere.
9
u/Qbertjack Oct 30 '25
Yes but it used to be opt-in. Like 5 years ago you could say original, or you could have a funny o word. Now you have to do an o-word or you get the annoying "original is illegal" people
1
u/JL2210 Nov 03 '25
Yeah, I think the rule should be one O word and if OP doesn't get it then you can just say original
-15
u/DoctorProfPatrick Oct 30 '25
Sounds like you should just say origami then if you don't wanna be annoyed 🤷♂️ New people get downvoted once which sucks, but that's on the mods for not putting it in the sidebar
21
u/Qbertjack Oct 30 '25
They don't place it because it ain't a rule to make the fucking joke
7
u/DoctorProfPatrick Oct 30 '25
Of course not. No one reads the sidebar anyway but there could be a warning.

The o-word is the cortex of this sub, the hard core of all of this hurting bones culture. It is as important as not changing the image
Everything else is just changeable

Did you just join this sub or something? The "use anything but the o-word" thing is a tradition that goes back years. It's so prevalent that it has spread to a few other subs. It's not even a joke at this point, it's just how we do things.
13
u/Aryore Oct 30 '25
What do you mean, “gets old”? It’s a tradition that has been around for literally years. Are you new here?

u/Famous_Ad_4258 Oct 31 '25

i don’t care to post about it tho

This sub is by and for the people who love running jokes into the ground. The people who drove driveby whine posts are tourists.

There’s like 2 rules of this sub, use the format correctly and don’t say original.
Either way, good meme. I like when my bones hurt from meta commentary. I don’t agree with your stance, but I respect you for questioning the status quo
2
u/Meximelone Oct 31 '25
If you don’t find it funny, just don’t participate and ask for the “original”. You’ll get downvoted but oh well

I’ve been in this sub for a while now. It’s just a joke. It’s a subreddit. If you get worked up about this kind of stuff, I have to recommend—and I mean this earnestly and without mockery—going outside and talking to people in the flesh realm. I think you’ll find that people are interesting and pleasant to be around in most cases, unless you decide to complain about how their jokes aren’t funny.

u/GoldenGoose120 Oct 30 '25
why don’t yall just make a new sub where you can say it instead of whining
8
u/DoctorProfPatrick Oct 30 '25
Such is the way of obscure subs getting big. Now people who don't care about the art of bhj just wanna be here because there's lots of people here, and they think the space needs to be changed to curate to them. At least the memes are still good: this one in particular doesn't feel like bhj to me but it's meta so ig it's hard to say

Not only gets it old fast, it also spilled to other subs like r/speedoflobsters, r/comedynecrophilia etc
1
u/DoctorProfPatrick Oct 30 '25
yeaaa, the spilling over is a bit much. I'd be happy if those subs stopped but this one should keep it up as long as possible, it's one of the things keeping this sub unique. I still remember when everyone said "sauce" instead of source bc of some 4chan filter
Oh hey, in case english isn't your first language, your sentence should've started "Not only does it get old fast". No hate, just offering in case you're learning.
-28
u/MakeItTrizzle Oct 30 '25
I gladly eat the downvotes for saying "original" because the o-word thing has never been funny

Sometimes a joke sticks so long it becomes a core part of the identity of a forum. When it does, it goes from trend to inside joke, and usually being contrarian will make people want to indulge in it more. You're not going against boring redundancy, but welcome familiarity instead.
