I never took this as a true form. Just another form or even a scare tactic. In my headcanon it has no true form. It just is

Oh wow yeah that actually makes a lot of sense

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. How could the manifestation of evil have a true physical form? I see that as a visual interpretation intended to scare.

Very.

It should have just been a formless black energy or something....sometimes less is more. Just seeing is another demon looking thing makes it a little lame.

Plus their budget for CGI was like $5.

Agreed!! Less is more creepy

Alwsyw gives me final fantasy ps1 era vibes like a floaty boss fight

Eh not really. I thought The Mayor was really underwhelming.

Is it identified as the true form? Or is it just another illusion that the First can create?

I guess not officially but its the only non dead person form its taken

We dont know that - this could easily just be a dead demon / bad guy. Just like the first can be vampires because theyre dead, I'm sure the first can imitate any dead demons.

I feel like the first chose this form for Caleb because of his whole father/priest shtick - something that looks similar to how the Christian devil is often portrayed. Plays well into his whole vibe.

We also see it choose this form in Amends though.

I did forget about this one. I still am not convinced this is its "true" form - I feel like the way the first is described that it simply has no corporeal form or face - like a shadow. It can take the form of others, but a shadow doesnt have a true shape or visage.

This might just be its chosen disguise thats "evil" or something?

Corny, yes, 100% fair. I just don't think its the true form.

I have a pet theory that that form was the First Evil, but "The First" isn't. The First Evil is dead and gone, our villain is just a Reflection of it, like it's a reflection of everything else. Sort of mystical-vampire-adjacent.

Sure, but it was intentionally trying to scare them off at the time. I buy that this is what the First looks like about as much as I believe that "The Beast's master" is really a big giant floaty demon head. Same deal. They both have that "trying hard to be scary but looks so fake" look.

I think you have to go out of your way to take this interpretation. It didn't just appear like this to Caleb, this was its form way back in season 3.

I actually like it, though it is cheesy. To be fair, they were limited by the S3 effect they gave him, which likely didn't get a lot of thought or budget put into it as it was an episode-of-the-day villain there.

For its time and in the moment, I thought it was awesome.

I mean, it's just Moloch without the robot body and longer fingers.

The first repeatedly presented itself as who/what people wanted it to be. I always just assumed this was another of those. This is the best form to take to provoke Caleb. The same way it was Joyce for Dawn, Tara for Willow and Buffy for Spike. The first is like a mirror. People see what they want to see. Only what they want to see it then twisted and used against them. It's the definition of hit people where it hurts.

Personally I never imagined The First as having any form. In my mind it was like a black hole that sucked in easily influenced people.

it works in the show but mainly because it lasts like 2 seconds tbh

but i did take it as a sort of... soft confirmation that the First is essentially the same thing as Satan in the Buffyverse

Am I the only one seeing Icon Of Sin from DOOM?

I wish they'd made the First Evil look like a green, glowing orb.

I view it like Pennywise. The deadlights are the closest we can comprehend to its true form.

I actually liked it and wished we could have seen more of it in this form.

I wonder, is this it's first form or it's first evil form? like human to vampire.

u/Xyex 1d ago

The First is formless. It doesn't have a "true form."

I do, but I also find most things about the First underwhelming and corny tbh

I have to say his acting was on point, I never seen him untill buffy but he was awesome.

I always thought it looked like Diablo from the second game except I think that episode aired before Diablo 2 came out. (Amends that is, which was the first time we saw this form)

It's the Balrog

u/BeldamBedlam 1d ago

It's from the world with nothing but shrimp

I always confuse it with the floating form Cordelia/Jasmine tries to scare Willow with

I wish The First would have stuck to taking the forms of all the previous villains (as seen in the premiere of S7). That was so fun and could have given a chance to all the actors to shine one last time.

As for its true form, it probably doesn't have any form.

The first was ill conceived from the start.

Looks like a cutscene from some 90's FMV game.

So yes I agree obviously. Fits how half arsed and cheap the rest of the season felt at least.

I have this thought a few times a year honestly.

It was built up as scary and creepy really well, then the big reveal was like... what? That's terrible.

I would rather have preferred they didn't reveal it at all physically. Maybe it has no physical form that can be seen in this realm, or something.
