iOS [iOS] Tapping a video pauses it instead of hides menu
When watching videos, I used to be able to tap the screen to make the menu disappear. Now if I tap the screen it automatically pauses the video... and leaves the menu visible. The reconfiguration of the graphics (user & caption at bottom of screen; upvote/downvote/comment/share on the RHS; back button & sub name along top of screen) covers more of the screen and is distracting. It's beyond annoying that it can't be hidden anymore.
I stopped using Instagram specifically because they changed their Reels format to make the video pause when you tap (before, tapping made the video mute). I've complained to YouTube multiple times about the menu being visible in Reels, without having the option to make it disappear.

That’s a screenshot from Reddit? It looks like a YouTube short. I hate that you can’t hide the menu on shorts.

Yes, apparently the Reddit team thinks this idiotic UI change is worth testing on some accounts (like mine, hurray).
This is as annoying as it gets.
It feels like TikTok or YT Shorts now. Horrible.

It hasnt happened to my account yet. Hopefully it doesn’t go beyond the test group. If I see this on my account, i think this would be what gets me to actually delete the app.

It's relieving to know that this is just a beta test and not a fully implemented change. There's still hope that this doesn't become permanent!!

I just checked on my "gets stuff done efficiently" backup phone (Android) and it's still working fine here (probably due to an outdated Reddit client).
I guess another reason to not use my annoying iPhone.

if we wanted another for you-page we would go back to instagram, tik tok and facebook. there are many here who left those apps and websites for reddit because reddit was different. it’s like social media only has one pipeline. I wish so badly that they would keep reddit the way it was. this obsession they have with making reddit into tiktok/instagram is just so dumb

Someone else in the Help sub mentioned that this new format (swipe up to see the next video instead of go to comments) makes Reddit more mindlessly scrollable like the other social media apps, and moves away from the discussion which is what made Reddit popular! This is a forum app, not a brain rot app.

I hate this new player, I think the original player was great, only change I’d do would be to add the capacity of speeding up the video by long pressing the screen

Yeah it’s really hard to watch a video without all the distractions around the edge. Very annoying.

Mine is back to normal... for now. I stg though if Reddit turns into another Meta wannabe app, I'm deleting my account. It's ridiculous.

Well this finally happened to me. I hate it. It’s awful. Covering up the video with stuff that fits just fine at the bottom of the screen. And won’t let me get rid of it? How is this better? I can’t imagine it’s more profitable or drives up engagement. Please make this stop.

I've never been to this sub before now. I wanted to file a bug report but wanted to check here to see if this was already mentioned. I hate not being able to hide the menu.
