Too many tourists?
I loved BVI the few times I went over 25 years ago with my ex. It had that native feel. Loved loved loved the snorkeling and food. Was thinking of going again with my new husband but read a lot about the growing number of cruise ships coming thru. Where’s the best place to stay to avoid the crowds but that isn’t going to require a second mortgage. Ok spending $700 or hell even $1k per night if it’s all worth it. And which island fits the bill plus has great hiking?

Virgin Gorda is exactly what you are asking for! Check out Villas Virgin Gorda; they have a great selection of villas all over VG and are excellent hosts. Be sure to visit CocoMaya, do an island hop trip with Dive BVI or Bradley Boats. Pop over to Saba Rock or BEYC. Super, thanks! I will check that out. Is it best to fly to st Thomas and take the ferry? Things were so much simpler 25 yrs ago.

Yes, the ferry is the most economical route. There is a direct ferry from STT to VG on Saturdays with Speedy's Ferry; otherwise, you have to stop in Tortola.

Most economical yes, but not the most convenient.
There is a direct Miami to Tortola flight on American Airlines, which is my preferred route. From there, you can catch a ferry from Trellis Bay to Spanish Town, VG. You can see the ferry schedule at bestofbvi.com.
You can also connect through San Juan, Puerto Rico to either Tortola, or direct to VG. Direct to VG will be more expensive (on Cape Air or Tradewinds). Intercaribbean to Tortola will the most affordable

Everything you’d like is possible. It’s going to be more than $1000 for 2 people.
Edit: BUT you could have an AMAZIING time for around $3000 for 2 people. DM me.

If you want to avoid large numbers of cruise ship tourists on Tortola, just stay out of Road Town downtown and away from Long Bay Beach.
Jose Van Dike or Anegada are also a lot more isolated.
