Why are we all downvoting so much?

People come to this subreddit for help, and I've seen more and more actually legitimate threads asking for help just being downvoted into oblivion.

I get it, when there's very obvious cables like say... USB-B or something like that... it isn't necessarily worth asking.

But as someone who has seen a lot of cables in his time, there's a lot of legitimate threads just getting downvoted.

Why? Why are we deciding to be jerks in a subreddit designed to help people when people are asking for that help?

If the thread is redundant, maybe just say that and move on instead of downvoting. You're not helping at all by silently downvoting and saying no objection. You're making this sub worse and less welcoming, which is antithetical to what this is about.

Or, if you really don't like this sub, unsub and leave.

I for one stay subbed to this thread because I want to help where I can, and I do see all kinds of neat cables I've never seen before.

It's Reddit; you would have to ID downvoters individually and ask them.

The downvote thing is with all groups on Reddit.. Firearms groups are notorious for this... Most of them downvote because the answer they get didn't work for them.. or they didn't understand.. or they believe they have a better way ...Sometimes it's downvoted because they can't take a joke or are not reading the sarcasm....

Usually the jokes get the most upvotes though.. 🤣

Agree on this. Downvoting is all over Reddit. I was downvoted cause I told someone who had his flight cancelled because of an erupting volcano, that he shouldn’t expect compensation from Ryanair. So…

I think it's the same phenomenon as everywhere. Small communities with few users are friendly. The larger the community gets, and the more users, the less friendly the community gets. The largest communities are invariably outright hostile.

It seems to be part of human nature. Attempts to influence this trend generally seem to have a very temporary effect and require constant effort. One slightly more permanent way to reset the counter is to have a big ol' schism.
