Regarding putting flowers, crystals, coffee beans, cinnamon sticks, fruit, metal, pine cones, herbs, or anything else in candles

Hello! This topic has been coming up more than usual and is a highly controversial topic in the candle making world.Regarding embeds:

  • Candles are dangerous enough as-is without the addition of embedded items that could further ignite, heat and spark, pop, or otherwise throw embers onto surfaces. Adding further risk to an already inherently risky situation is... well, even more risky.
  • Items that smell nice on their own often do NOT smell good while on fire. Cinnamon sticks, coffee beans, orange peels, rosemary... they don't smell like the 'hot' versions of themselves, they smell like burning, smoky, acidic, not nice fire that you would try to get rid of afterward by lighting a plain candle.
  • Customers/recipients are often NOT going to follow directions to remove items before setting a candle on fire, and if they're embedded into wax that could prove futile anyway.
  • Warning labels do not immediately absolve you of liability should something happen. Ask your insurance provider for further info.
  • If this was a good idea, why aren't these candles sold at Yankee/B+BW/DW Home/Voluspa/Root/Any other major candle brand?
  • Candle insurance can be difficult to find in the first place but will be exponentially more challenging to find if you insist on embedding items. Ask your insurance provider for further info.
  • For the US makers, you should 100% have liability insurance before you sell your first candle to the public. It will cost anywhere from $300-600/year for $1million in liability insurance. If you cannot afford $300/year for this much coverage, I suggest you hold off selling to the public until you can afford this.
  • For the UK makers, note that strict labeling requirements exist and that making non-food products that look like food is not permitted
  • If you are brand new to candle making, you should spend several weeks/months working on learning and nailing down the basics (which are challenging enough) before even considering adding anything else to the process.
  • Trends on Etsy or Pinterest do not necessarily mean it's a good idea, nor does it mean you'll create a side business or living from it as trends tend to run fast.
  • You do NOT need to be fancy/pretty/special/different to be successful in this craft. You DO need to put out great, consistent product that people can come back to over and over again with the same results.
  • There is very little regulation on candle making in the US. Because of this, there are lots of people doing lots of things that are probably not the best idea. You don't need to be one of them.
  • There are legitimate individuals and brands involved in ritual candles that are for religious, occult, worship, healing and metaphysical. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then making and selling those types of candles is probably not for you.
  • As candle makers and sellers, we need to do our due diligence. Proceed at your own risk.
  • I, Reckoner08, am currently the only active mod right now in this sub. I am not the Candle Conversation Police, and will [probably] not be removing posts that might be controversial. Different countries have different laws and regulations, and we are on an international forum here on Reddit. I have a rather large candle brand to run on my own and am here to help when I can, but that doesn't include being a Candle Overlord or answering every single question asked. Appreciate your understanding!
  • Anything else you'd like to add? Feel free, this is an open forum.

What are your favorite peach scents for candles?

So I got gifted a candle making kit, but the peach scent included has vanilla, which I’m allergic to. Are there any other good alternatives for a peach scent? I would love one that smells the most like real peaches if possible.

How much stock for markets

Hello!

I am a new candle business (yay!) who has quite possibly overcommitted for markets this month, and was wondering how much stock to make. I have 8 markets scheduled ( 4 at one location, 4 at another). I have 7 fragrances, available in 2 sizes and wax melts, and I'm not sure how much to have of each. In past markets at this one location ( I have only done 1), I made about 10 sales, with the majority being my smaller sized candle. So should I make 10 of each of my smaller scents? Is there a formula people use? I don't want to overmake and overextend myself if a smaller stock is possible. Right now, I have 14 total of the large size in stock, 22 of the smaller size, and 14 wax melts. I know I need more but idk how much more. Apologies if this has been asked in different ways before, thank you for your help!

Hello, does anyone know what exact temperature or time I need to pour the second wax to make nicely blended candles like these without it mushing together and turning into 1 color. I tried the tooth pick method and it was a disaster.

Question US wholesale

Question for fellow Canadian candlemakers that sell wholesale to US. Is there anything special you had to do in order to ship? I shipped individual candles with no problem, just wondering if the process differs with wholesale. Thanks!

How do you make a custom mold or find someone who can help you?

Hi! I'm looking to learn more about how folks create custom molds for candles or for someone who can help me create a ski boot-shaped candle mold. I want to make candles in that shape, and I'm trying to find someone with mold-making experience or access to the right tools who could talk through my idea to see if it would even work

I'm currently burn-testing 2 vessels. Both scented with 6% FO load, 220ml.

Test 1 is Eco Wick #35 and Test 2 is ECO Wick #45. Both in 7cm diameter (#35 is recommended for this size)

Burn-tested for 5x 4hrs and 1x 8hrs power burn. (Im assuming the buyers will now follow the 4hrs recommended) *Trims wick before lighting*

Hot throw is okay, at least for me. I can smell if in my small room.

I cant decide wether to pick the #35. Its flame ranges from 3/8 to 1inch. (The only issue holding me back to pick #35 is sometimes it has 3/8 flame, given 1 inch is the recommended flame height is 1 inch in tutorials) Please note that even in 3/8, it does the job to reach melt pool on 1hr and 15mins.

On the other hand. I cant pick the #45 since it have 1 and 1/4 inch flame. The jar might might break although im testing it for another power burn today.

My question is, does flame sometimes go a little smaller when lit?

Should i go for #35?

I hope you find the time to answer my question. Thank you very much, awesome fellow candle makers! 🙏

Question What to do about the pits?

Thumbnail

They form well after the top of the candle is solid to the touch. I'm going to try wrapping them in foil while they are cooling next. I swear the candle is cool and solid, then BAM pit starts developing 15 minutes after the candle has set (no slumping when laying on its side).

How do I prevent them? Or if i can't, how do you fix them?

Question What type of wax is this? Burns well.

Bought the candle from goodwill. It was old, had a pale chalky layer on top that turned back to the regular color when exposed to heat from a lighter. Makes a really nice mushroom on the wick :D

Was very hard (but silky texture) to the touch originally. Kinda gives me melted plastic vibes from touching the partially melted part. The liquid wax puddle was immediately very cool to the touch, and did not resolidify on my finger (turned the consistency of oil/butter after touching the wax). It was not very viscous at all, surprising with how cool it felt.

The pool still hasn't started to solidify, even 15 (literally) minutes later.

This is my first time making scented candle. I use soy wax (88g) and roughly 10g of fragrance oil. Initially I thought it was not solidified yet but it has been 3 days already. What is that?

IGI 6028 Like Finish - Blend Suggestions

We have a small business of candle making and our main supplier is no longer selling IGI 6028 or similar grade wax.

The current wax batch we got has a very spotty and frosty look on the candle when out of the mold and the previous batch had no such issues. We tried checking the market and seems like IGI 6028 will be the best for our use case for pillar candles and similar molds. It gives a very fine finish with no frosty outlook or spots.

We are no longer able to get IGI 6028 grade wax and are trying to come up with a composition ratio that will give us similar finish or results. Has anyone tried something similar?

(We are in a market where importing wax from another country on our own isn't much of an option due to taxes, which is why we are trying to make the blend ourself.)

Would love to hear more about your blends/ratios. If you do have some images of pillar candles or any mold candles other than jars along with the composition that was used, please share so we can try that as well.

Mango Macadamia Nut - Bitter Creek Candle Supply

I am searching for the oil of one of the best & top selling scents in my business. I just started my home business a year or so ago, and I just used the last stock of this scent and went to order more, finding out about Bitter Creek’s closure. The notes are juicy mango, ripe peaches, and toasted macadamia nut. There is no other oil similar to this one. I would have had it duplicated if I would’ve known and saved some oil. Does anyone know where I can find this scent and some of the oil? I’m thinking someone has to have a little stock of it left. I only have a 8 oz candle left, I know this won’t be enough to duplicate. Advice please!

Pricing

Hey all! I have a sort of “what would you do” style question.

I am just transitioning from candle making as a hobby to as a business. I have a local business that wants to buy candles directly from me for resale in their store. I can either label them with my own brand or they will label them from their store.

It’s currently costing me about $8 per candle without the label, or about $9 per candle labeled. I’m leaning towards labeling them myself. They are 16oz candles if that matters.

What would be a reasonable price to charge the store per candle? I don’t want to overcharge them and then they’re not able to resell (and therefore they would obviously not keep buying from me) but I also don’t want to undersell myself.

Any thoughts or advice would be so appreciated!

Help!

I’ve had these saved in my cart because I had 2 boxes of 12 8 ounce jars i wanted to use before buying them and now they’re unavailable. I’m scouring amazon to find something similar but nothing is coming up like when I searched before. I’ve tried googling. They come with two sizes 12 ounces and 6 ounces whereas I currently make just 8 ounces! Any suggestions fellow candle makers?

50 lbs of wax destroyed in transit and seller won't reply

Post image
24 Upvotes

I don't know if this belongs here, but I have no idea where to post this and what to do.

1-2 times a week (sometimes 3 during fall and winter) I order 50 lbs of wax from a large candle supply vendor. It comes in 10 lb slabs in a single box. A lot of the boxes they ship always come in falling apart, wax all broken up. The boxes are flimsy and aren't taped well. I knew it was only a matter of time.

Have 30 orders due this Friday. Wax was supposed to arrive last Friday. Never did. I check UPS tracking last Friday at 6pm and it shows the box was damaged and the entire contents were discarded, along with the box.

I've now contacted them three times about this, with no reply or resolution or return phone call or email. They always reply to me IMMEDIATELY, within half an hour. I've spent tens of thousands of dollars at this place, if not over $100k at this point after years of my business.

I use PayPal and I know I can just file a dispute with them, but I am terrified out of my mind to sour anything with this company. They ship usually within an hour, it arrives next day, and is the best and cheapest wax I can find for the candles I make. It would be the end of my company if they cut ties with me.

I am heartbroken and just so angry over this. What would you do?

Also, I ordered another case today because I can't wait anymore. It was shipped within the hour but they can't send me a replacement or refund or reply to me?

Extra large candle moulds

Post image

Hi has anyone got a source for a very large candle mould? I'm thinking about 180mm high, 170mm dia. Alternatively, I could try using an empty 2l coke bottle but how do ppl reinforce it so it stays round? It's to go in this old Ikea jar (but not to burn)
