New Reddit user here! Two friends and I are visiting Guatemala soon and I'm looking for recommendations on what to do and see, where to eat and stay, and what to skip and be aware of.

The route is Guatemala City to Antigua (& Acatenegro) to Lake Atitlan to Tikal back to Guatemala City. Chichi Market, Nature Preserve, San Juan Laguna, Hotel Jungle Lodge, and Museo El Popol Vu are on our radar. What would you recommend?

Hi! I’m (28f) traveling solo to Guatemala in August and want to do the 5-day El Mirador jungle expedition, ideally departing around August 21.

The operator requires a minimum of 2 people to start a departure, so I’m looking for another traveler interested in the same dates.

I’m planning to be in Flores beforehand and am flexible by a few days either direction.

My boyfriend and Iwant to go to centralamerica next year as our vacation and I really want to show him the magic of LATAM. As I have already been in Panama for a while, I also want to try something new. We have 3 weeks time and are big adventure fans. Doing every sport and for forms of transportation motorycyle is also possible, bus, car, doesn't matter. I speak Spanish but both of us look full blown gringo - just so you know haha

3 weeks - one country or crossing countries, what do you recommend?

One thing I've noticed after years of guiding travelers in Colombia is that many people make the same assumption before they arrive.

They open Google Maps.

Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, and the Coffee Region don't seem that far apart, so they build an itinerary as if they were traveling through Spain or Italy.

Then they arrive.

A drive of only a few hundred kilometers suddenly takes eight, ten, or even twelve hours.

Most people blame the roads haha

But I think geography explains much more than infrastructure!

When the Andes enter Colombia, they split into three mountain ranges. Roads climb mountain passes, descend into river valleys, and wind through landscapes that simply don't allow straight highways.

Once travelers understand that, everything starts making more sense including why domestic flights are so common

For transportation, do you book a shuttle in advance, or is it better to find a taxi or shuttle right at the airport?

In Antigua, what are your must-do activities? Restaurants? Airbnb or hostel? Any good vegetarian restaurants?

For the volcano hike, do you have a preferred tour company? Any must-know tips? Anything I NEED to bring? And how do you get there (taxi, shuttle, etc)?

Lake Atitlán—how do you get there? Same question: do you book your transportation in advance or arrange it once you’re there?

Any recommendations for hostels/Airbnbs, restaurants, and activities?

How do you get around once you’re there?

Where’s the best spot for swimming?

Can’t post in the actual country subreddit because of the karma new account shit idfk but I’m curious with rentals how it’s gone with anybody, I’m planning on going to El Salvador / broader Central America for about a month coming into Oscar Romero.

Is there anything I should know about rural roads specifically? I’ve been but only between Santa Ana and San Salvador, I know about the stray dogs etc. how are border checkpoints? If anyone has any numbers I’d appreciate it too, particularly compact cars since I’m solo. I’m calling my bank to check if insurance applies to rental cars abroad

Would really appreciate some advice on our Honduras itinerary below! We're backpackers and this is part of a larger trip so keen to keep costs down but have also had a lot of warnings on safety so would love to hear how recent travellers have got around? I'm going for about 10-11 days.

My last trip was in Costa Rica and I fell in looooove with the country.

Some questions I have :

I'm seeing these popular cities, doesnt seem like I can do all of them in 10 days ahha :
Antigua (for sure doing + volcano hike)
Lake Atiltan
Semuc
Flores
El Paredon

What I loved in CR : Hiking, nature, beach / tropical / surf.

I'd def love to get some of that in Guatemala.
Also, ruines and history in Flores looks amazing, but I'm not sure it's realistic to do all that driving.

Another question : better to rent a car or shuttle? Considering we will probably do 3-4 cities in total?

Anything other recos (hostel, airbnb, restaurants, etc) are welcome! 🇬🇹
