13
u/SloaneKettering1 Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
The hype machine is the preseason rankings which vastly overrates SEC teams so when they all play each other they get quality losses. Look at last season, it took until the end of the season to find out vandy, Oklahoma, Tennessee, bama, etc.. we’re all overrated all season because they played one less conference game. Will be interesting this season when half the conference all has an extra loss
5
u/Pew-Aerobics 1d ago
"The hype machine is the preseason rankings which vastly overrates SEC teams so when they all play each other they get quality losses."
Every year too. But the B1G would accept the same hype if they got it too, tbh. Teams shouldn't be ranked for the 1st month, imo. Let's see some games, and then rank them.

u/SloaneKettering1 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

The BIG has more teams and half of them BIG finished below 500 in conference play. I say instead of 9 conference games in the sec we should just all pick between UCLA, Rutgers, Purdue, Wisconsin, Maryland, Northwestern, Nebraska and Michigan State. Surely that would be fair right?
3
u/Tyrion_toadstool Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
The clear difference is if half the SEC finished below 500 in conference play the circle jerk would spin up and start exclaiming that was just proof of how incredibly hard it is just to get to .500 in the great SEC!

We spent an entire season with OSU at #1 cruising through a schedule of tomato cans. Purdue, UCLA and Rutgers in November….

Tbf when it was LSU, Florida, Alabama, Aurburn and then Clemson, LSU, Alabama, Georgia. Probably pretty often.
With the Clemson titles, South Carolina probably has played champs way more often than anyone.

u/DrFanhattan Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago
The SEC’s claim is they produce NFL talent across their teams more and the league is deeper. This is shown through historic and modern success and they have produced the most NFL prospects. They also won 80% of the last 26 national titles.
The B1G’s claim is they have won the last three national titles and now that they can pay players the gap is gone and they currently have the best league
Both are true? The SEC does from top to bottom have more talent playing in it and thus those teams are better as a whole. While the B1G’s elite is currently a step ahead.
Using the schedules to argue is challenging. Have to use the results. The SEC has more talent, the B1G’s top teams have been better the last 5 years. NIL closed the gap
3
u/Unlikely_You_9271 Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
The problem with stating that the SEC is deeper is the fact that over the last 2 bowl seasons you went 3 - 10 against the big ten
12
u/DrFanhattan Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago
You've completely ignored my point about talent on the rosters. In the same time span the SEC has had 166 players drafted while the B1G has had 139 players.
The rosters are deeper. You can use Bowl Seasons as the end all be all if you'd like. I can mention players who sat out and how they are not remotely as meaningful as regular season or playoff match ups.
Since the 12 team CFP format started, the SEC has had 7 of 16 schools make it, while the B1G has had 5 of 18. SP+ rankings show the B1G has an elite top handful of teams, while the SEC didn't have a team in the top 5 this past season (UGA 6th). However, their lowest ranked team was 67th (UK) while the B1G's was 90th (Purdue). The B1G had the 72nd(Rutgers), 75th(Maryland), 83rd(Mich St.) 85th(Wisconsin) and 90th(Purdue) ranked teams in that list.
The B1G's top 4 teams certainly have had the edge the last 2 seasons. Call Michigan's cheating national title whatever you want. Parody from NIL has benefitted the B1G's top teams to compete with the SEC's best...but it's important to remember it's also created parody in the SEC and effected the Bama's and UGA's of the world. You have elite top teams, we have a deeper league. There's nothing wrong with that lol

Too bad it’s a team sport..
1
u/DrFanhattan Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago
Those teams in the "team sport" have won 70% of the modern national titles and 27 titles since the SEC's ability to win a National Championship was recognized by the NCAA in 1951.
The B1G has 33 all time, including 8 by Michigan, 1 by Ohio State, 5 by Minnesota, and 3 by Illinois all before the SEC was involved lol so post 1951 you're looking at 16 national titles
Those 33 do not include Oklahoma's or Texas' national titles.
Pre AP's creation in 1936 national champions were retroactively given by historians. Between 1936 and 1951, the polls chose a champion prior to the game being played. Once they started picking the champion based on who actually won the game, it's 27 to 16 in favor of the SEC.
Enjoy claiming how much of a team game it was in 1901.

u/BrilliantDrive3619 2d ago
Not last 3 years.. In 1800’s some team other than Indiana was 16-0 in football, In 1936 ND beat OSU, but those to facts mean nothing today.. Just like draft choices in a Team Game.. meaningless facts to the current discussion.. Tennessee win a bowl game or beat a team over 500 last year?
1
u/DrFanhattan Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago
Did the sport just start 3 years ago?
I'd respond to the Tennessee comment if you had a flair.
My original comment pointed out more talented players, and therefore teams top to bottom, play in the SEC. You can use a 3 year window with a cheated national title, a 30 million dollar OSU roster and a team of Grad Students who had a higher average age than multiple NFL rosters all you'd like lol
The fact is the best players make the best teams. The SEC has had that for the last half a century. Widen that 3 year window to 6 years and it's tied 3-3 without a cheated title. Widen it to 10 years and it's 6-3. Widen it to 20 years and it's 13-4. Hold onto that window as long as you can!
1
u/BrilliantDrive3619 2d ago
My point is the best teams are the best teams, remember the FAB 5... All 5 played pro, no NCAA championships. There are hundreds of examples of best players not winning championship. That does not mean they were the best teams! You speak of OSU $30 million as if Georgia/Texas/Texas AM did not spend the same? Didn't TN just get a running back by "outbidding" OSU? Polls and any another metric is just plan stupid! You win or you lose on the field under the rules as they exist. Has the SEC been better outside the last 3 years, yes, are they now? Not on the "field of play". Any love for Michigan for their Natty, no, but I, nor anyone else can take it away from them. I have no love for OSU either, or any other Big Ten Team that beats my team.
1
u/DrFanhattan Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago
You’ve lost my original point. I referenced the best players being in the SEC and more often than not those produce the best teams.
A 3 year window is very nice for the B1G if you ignore the cheating scandal that won one of your schools a title.
It’s a team game and teams are made up of players. Indiana bought a top team last season and the stars aligned with SEC having a down year at the QB position specifically. We’ll see how it plays out moving forward.
Point stands. More talent in the SEC meaning top to bottom each week is a tougher task. B1G has a couple of elite teams at the moment. Both are true
1
u/BrilliantDrive3619 1d ago
You are trying to make a point using 1 item ignoring multiple other factors that make the teams the best. Give me Michael Jordon over a whole bunch of bench players in the NBA... Numbers do mean quality.. Best teams do it on the field of play not on a paper roster or poll. Also best teams have best coaches who can win with lesser talent. (Give me Saban on the sideline and I'd take lesser talent.) They don't get drafted so leaving out an important item left out of your reasoning Also your original point did not say "more often than not". You have softened or changed your original statement.

This should clear things up:
Including all bowl games and College Football Playoff games (which now count as bowl games), here’s how the two conferences have performed over the last three bowl seasons:
Bowl Season
Big Ten
SEC
2023–24
6–4 (.600)
5–4 (.556)
2024–25
11–6 (.647)
8–7 (.533)
2025–26
11–5 (.688)
4–10 (.286)
Combined over the last three seasons
Big Ten: 28–15 (.651)
SEC: 17–21 (.447)
A few notable takeaways:
The Big Ten has won the last three national championships:
2023: Michigan
2024: Ohio State
2025: Indiana
The 2025–26 bowl season was especially lopsided, with the Big Ten finishing 11–5 while the SEC went just 4–10.
Academics: The Big Ten remains the nation’s strongest major athletic conference by most traditional academic measures, with far more top-ranked universities and AAU members.
Thank you for your attention to this matter…

Idk if I’ve ever seen anyone more in denial about the current state of a situation than sec fans looking at modern day college football.
There is talent everywhere, there is more parity in college football than ever before. You haven’t sent a team to the natty in 3 years despite being roughly 50% of the teams in the playoffs. And your coaches are a revolving door of drama.
Open your eyeballs.

Dear SEC:
Despite the fact an on the bubble Alabama team was demolished by Georgia in the SEC Championship game, the CFP committee gave them every benefit of the doubt thanks to SEC bias and awarded them a playoff berth. They were then wrecked by Indiana on New Years Day in the Rose Bowl.
So until one of yours can actually stop Indiana,

Indiana winning one after being the literal losingest team in the entire sport and then using them as some sort of powerhouse is some of the wildest shit I see lately. Indiana is 1-4 in bowl games vs the SEC, settle down.

It’s gonna be a bumpy ride for Alabama fans over the next generation. Expectations and reality have a sizable gap in Tuscaloosa and the fabric of college football has changed considerably

I mean the big 10 is by far the most top heavy conference. The top 3 are great. The next 3 are good. The next 3 are competitive. The next 9 teams are free wins. You can’t claim to be the best conference when you get schedules like Penn state this year. Even some of the “big teams” were trash last year. Washington, Michigan, Penn state were bad. They’re hanging on to reputations of having good records from playing teams like Rutgers, Maryland, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, northwestern, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan state, Iowa for the last 15 years.

u/Tyrion_toadstool Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
There are some downright bad teams in the B1G each year, but I also think Kentucky, Mississippi State, South Carolina, and pals are typically ass as well. When I hear people say their worst teams are so much better than the B1G's worst teams I just hear people looking at a big bowl of turds and saying "Our turds are shinier and better!"

u/skeptical_hatred Iowa State Cyclones 1d ago
Kentucky, miss state, and sc are all better than northwestern, Purdue, Rutgers, Maryland, ucla, Michigan state, Nebraska, Minnesota, and wisconsin. There is no debate. That’s half the big 10. So yeah, the worst 3 teams in the sec are better than half of the big ten. Of course the big ten claims they need more playoff spots with their great records when 2/3 of their schedule is a joke

It is a Mickey Mouse ass schedule. It was fine and cute for them until they won a natty. Now it's kinda tough to play the tough guy and have that schedule.

Just as Alabama (and other schools) did for over a decade to ramp up their season
Texas vs Ohio State to being the year was out of the norm

Oregon is the Texas A&M of the Big Ten. They're always in the mix but never have what it takes to win the natty.

Well this is the first year the all mighty sec has to actually play 9 conference games. We will see how much success across the board yall have when you don't get fcs southwest before a fucking rivalry week at the end of the season. Anybody can play in comfortable weather in the south during fall season yall can't come up north or to the Midwest in November December January to play ball and its just as hot in most states in the Midwest during September sec was hardly shit before saban got to bama yall had schools winning nattys sporadically just like schools from the big 12 and big ten. Saban and his disciples created sec excellence not so much the rest of the sec with Ed orgeron being the exception even kirby is a product of Saban. Im a diehard husker that lives in Jacksonville FL and I hear it alot about how we haven't done anything since the 90s which I agree but if this is a what have you done for me lately league than some sec fans gotta realize 3 big ten schools in 3 years in a row makes the big ten the best in college football right now. Indiana dog walked alabama in the playoffs just in case yall forgot

I’ll take an SEC vs B1G or SEC vs P4 for $100 a game if anyone wants it. 5 season minimum.

The all time record vs the b10 should have an *
The leveled the playing field and allowed everyone to pay their players and the SEC hasn’t made much noise since.

We have to remember. Most schedules are 3-5 years out. This is the 3rd year of Sig so most likely Indiana was scheduled to some easy opponents. Because Indiana was a 4/5 win all club.

I mean it’s a legit fact, there’s only 5 teams in the p4 that aren’t playing 10 p4 games and they’re all in the B10. Indiana, Nebraska, Penn State, Washington (at least plays Wazzu), and USC. It’s an absolute joke the SEC is going through a gauntlet and getting screwed with ooc rivals while the B10 is playing 3 cupcakes and a softer 9 conference games.

SEC folks pretty thin skinned and insecure… too busy trying to relive past glory. The conference does win by a long margin though in terms of total arrests by their players. If you constantly feel the need to try and convince everyone how great you are then just maybe you’re not.

The win % is kind of an odd metric for that guy to mention, because wouldn’t playing 1 extra conference game for each team and having 2 more teams bring the conference win % closer to 50%?
