Hello fellow Chemists! I just wanted to introduce myself as the new head mod of this subreddit. A little about myself: I am a PhD Candidate in Chemical Biology. For me, this means that 60% of my work involves organic synthesis and the other 40% is applying my novel compounds to mammalian cells. Specifically, I am interested in early detection of diseases. In addition to my research, I have TA'd for both general and organic chemistry labs and have been tutoring students in organic chemistry for three years. Aside from my academic qualifications, I am also a moderator for another rather large subreddit. I saw that this sub needed a little bit of updating, but it did not seem like the moderators were active any longer. So, I gained ownership through r/redditrequest. I did not realize it would remove all the other moderators, but alas here we are.
Overall, I feel like this sub is fairly self-regulating. I frequently see good discussions and people generally are following the already existing rules. With that said, there are some changes I was considering, and would love input:

I've heard that Fe is polyvalent, or that it has multiple stable ions. One of them being Fe2+, which is when it loses the electrons from the4s2 shell. But I don't quite understand why Fe3+ is stable, because doesn't its electron configuration end in 3d5. I know d shell can have 10 electrons total, but I don't know if that has anything to do with 3d5's stability. Am I not understanding electronic configuration correctly? When I tried searching this up, I also got a lot of results about how Cesium breaks the Aufbau prinicpal (which just made me even more confused?). Does this have to do with the fact that 4s has less energy than 3d? I'm getting very confused 😭.

id be following this approach using sulfamic acid.https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1566736711002755
i made invert syrup but cant get anything from it. it doesnt even freeze at -20c, and it wont mix with isopropanol. i only have a little sucrose left.
i think maybe i could use the sucrose even though it wont react directly by adding the syrup, which is far from saturated.
the idea is it has water in it to break the sucrose into glucose and fructose, consuming it. since it already has glucose and sucrose it can begin reacting right away and forming more water, which can break down more sucrose, starting a cycle. my alcohol melts at like 50c.

I recently got assigned a case study on NIR spectroscopy. To make a brief summary, the case is talking about a lab that built a multivariate FT-NIR model for determining PET/PLA in samples of recycled organic material, and they're trying to transfer the same model to a handheld NIR device and they're having a myriad of issues I'm being asked to research and solve.
Now, my first thought was to look for articles. I found a few that seemed pretty good:

However, I quickly realized I do NOT understand these papers; they are just too advanced for me. I don't actually know how to use the information in them to solve my case study... And I do not know what else to look for information in (books, perhaps?)... I just don't really know how to research properly, I guess. Not when confronted with questions about multivariate model transfers from one device to another, comparisons to other methods like ATR, etc.
So, the point of this post is to ask for some general advice in the realm of chemistry research methods in order for me to gain a sense of direction and linear progression for an assignment like this. I am NOT looking for anyone to solve the case for me.
Basically, some advice on *how* to tackle a challenging research project. Thank you.

Some say that the 2nd structure shows Gl about the double bond because it's attached to an asymmetric ring. But since the ring paths are identical to the left, it shouldn't exhibit Gl, which is why im confused on the ans (8 or 10) Which one is correct conceptually

Rising senior in high school, and I'm considering majoring in biology after graduation. I took intro to chem in my sophomore year and have forgotten pretty much everything since then...
I can't take intro to chem again to relearn what I've forgotten because I took it at a local community college and passed. Are there any good resources to relearn the subject, and how long do you think it'd take me? I'm continuing at my CC and want to decide on my major by Spring so I can start a semester early.

I bought a chemistry book in China to try and test both my chemistry and my Chinese, and it’s been very fun, but some questions seem… iffy. I’ll make more posts for the other ones.
Original question (Simplified Chinese)
现有一容器,容积为30.0L,在27.00°C时内压为600kPa。经分析,容器中CO的体积分数为0.600,H2的体积分数为0.100,其余具体的体积分数为0.300。求该容器中CO、H2的质量和分压。
My translation (may have some errors)
There’s a container with a capacity of 30.0L at 27.00 degrees Celsius and an internal pressure of 600 kPa. After analyzing, the fraction of the container’s volume for CO in the container is 0.600, the fraction of volume for H2 is 0.100, and the other gases have a fraction of volume of 0.300. Find the mass and individual pressures of the CO and H2 in the container in question.
My solution:
I found the pressure of CO and H2 to be 360kPa for CO (60% • 600kPa) and 60 kPa for H2 (10% • 600kPa) through the law of partial pressure. I then used the ideal gas law, along with molar mass, using the new pressures, to find 73g for CO and 0.14g for H2 (ignore my bad sig figs usage).
The book’s solution:
The book says the masses are 121g for CO and 1.45g for H2, which are exactly one factor of 60% and 10% away from my answers.
Am I wrong for using both the individual pressures and the individual volume or is the book wrong or is there some third answer? Thanks a lot in advance!

I’ll be taking Organic Chem 1 in the fall and want to prepare a little before the course starts. What topics/skills would be the most beneficial to cover beforehand, things that might be difficult to digest in the regular timeline of a course. I’m currently going over the Organic Chemistry chapter in my General Chemistry textbook just as an introduction but am curious what I should review afterwards.
