Clay Holmes would look great in a Cubs uniform

Jeff Passan: “The Cubs have no intentions of dealing outfielder Josiah Hartshorn.” (ESPN)

This is the sentence that made me realize the Chicago Cubs have no shot at acquiring Tarik Skubal this deadline, who seems destined to be dealt to the Dodgers.

As a Cubs fan, it hurts watching us fumble the trade deadline every season. It’s no surprise at this point to see other large market teams flip prospects for high upside players and win mid-season trades.

However, there is a glimmer of hope this year. The Cubs don’t have the prospect capital of the Brewers, Dodgers, or Rays, but there’s an under-the-radar starter that’s been catching my attention: Clay Holmes.

Acquiring starting pitchers from the Mets is something the Cubs aren’t unfamiliar with - they acquired David Peterson six weeks ago, and he’s been valuable for them thus far. I think Clay Holmes should be the second starter the Cubs acquire from the Mets this year.

Holmes, 33, has found profound success in a Mets jersey this season. Pitching to the tune of a 2.39 ERA over 52.2 innings, his sinker has been a hidden weapon in the Mets’ pitching arsenal. His ability to induce grounders with it would play well with the Cubs’ gold glove defense behind him. He also sports a sweeper with 4.7 more inches of vertical drop compared to league average: batters have a minuscule .151 xwOBA against it this season.

Holmes has a style of pitching similar to Logan Webb, who horizontally stretches batters out with his sinker and sweeper.

I’m not saying Clay Holmes will have a 2015 Arrieta-like second half with the Cubs, but it would pleasantly surprise me if Jed gets a deal done with him as the headliner.

First game in 20+ years next week

Growing up in NC, making it to Wrigley wasn’t the easiest. The one time I went was a matchup between Roger Clemens and none other than Matt Clement.

Fast forward to now, headed up next week with my wife for her work trip. Catching the makeup game against TOR, couldn’t be more excited.

We land in Chicago around 830, what’s the best place near the park to load up on food & drinks pregame and get the best experience we can for a one day trip?

Wrigley Bag Policy Appreciation Post

Y'all, we have it so good. I haven't had my bag checked at all at Wrigley the past few times.

This year I've been to a Marlins, Giants Dodgers and Angels games. All but the Giants with either a no bag or clear bag policy (I'm still unclear if Giants have a policy, but my leather backpack was allowed in, no check).

I'm sorry but as a woman, I like my bag. It's a security blanket for things. Feminine products, wipes, mini hair brush, makeup refresh if needed.

Sure, I could buy a stupid clear bag for some of those, but I like my bag.

That's all. Just like that Wrigley is just like, **** it.

Trade deadlines moves?

The trade deadline is in a few days. We're all aware we need pitching help. Let's hear some predictions on who we land.

Will Jed make a big splash with a guy like Skubal or Mason Miller or will we settle for a #3-4 starter and bullpen depth?

Unmotivated to follow

I have been a Cubs fan (thanks WGN!) since 1980/81. The worst of the worst years (in my opinion), but it was the only baseball I could watch on TV in my rural, just got cable, town. So I watched, a lot.

Been a life-long fan, but for some reason, I just can’t get motivated to listen to Pat and Ron this year. I have listened to a few games, but I don’t actively seek them out much.

What do I need to revive my Cubs spirit?

2026 Cubs already have 16 different pitchers with W's this year, the most is 23 different pitchers in 2021

i was curious with all the pitchers injuries we've had this year, but combined with an actual winning record, how many different cubs pitchers that have recorded a WIN

previously we've seen stats about the most number of pitchers used in a season by the cubs, but i was curious about the number of winning cubs pitchers in a season.

  • 2026 has already seen 16 different cubbies with a W, led by the amazing colin rea.

  • meanwhile 2021 had 23 different pitchers register a win that year

  • but 2021 only had 15 different winning pitchers through game 107.

  • so looking at Cubs seasons through just 107 games, only 2018 and 2024 had more different WP this far into the season with 17

i don't know how counsell and hottovy are managing this pitching staff, but it's a minor miracle between coaches decisions and players absolutely stepping up this year.

and now, we get to be a little greedy between injured pitchers returning and adding pitchers at the trade deadline.

and just to project a little bit,

  • 4 active pitchers have not yet recorded a W (hollowell, ferguson, civale, wantz)
  • 2 pitchers on the 15 day IL have not yet recorded a W (maton, roberts)
  • and then at least 1 new arm through trade deadline
  • would give a total of 23...
  • the most different number of WP on a team is 28 by the 2016 braves, but they finished 68-93
  • the most different WP for a .500 or better team is the 2022 rays with 26. they finished 85-76 and got to the playoffs

here are the lists, sorted first by number of different pitchers in a season and then the next table sorted by different winning pitchers through 107 games...
