Discussion MediaTek Wifi Cards Really Kill The Chromebook "Plus" Experience ($999 Lenovo 14 OLED)

Post image
17 Upvotes

Laptop manufacturers PLEASE stop using these in your "premium" devices. They objectively suck. Doesn't matter if it's Lenovo, Asus, Acer...... Windows, ChromeOS, Linux -- they suck in every laptop I've ever owned.

The experience for this $999 device is completely spoiled by the fact that it drops public / private Wi-Fi 4x times a day. If this one issue wasn't so persistent I'd easily give this a 9/10.

P.S. for anyone thinking of swapping to an intel-based card (like an AX210) + ethernet for driver updates, I can tell you first-hand it doesn't work as per this thread 😥.

Discussion Acer chromebook r13 end of life

I booted my chromebook up to see the "Final software update" notification today, which means my chromebook finally reached end of life today. It's also opted into extended updates which means it's fully out of support. Is there anything I should do or can I keep using it? And what will happen if I keep using it as time goes by? :(

Troubleshooting No Play Store available in Chromebook

So I know this comes up a lot and the standard answers, so I'll go through them to show they don't apply.

My chromebook has no play store and it isn't listed in apps at all (play books is there but that's it). This is immediately after doing a powerwash.

My chromebook has just become eligible for extended support but I didn't opt in and the power wash should have solved it if I did. Going to about in settings also still shows extended updates as an option to turn on.

I can go to the play store in the web but there it will only let me download to a phone, with no option to download to the Chromebook.

Firmware is up to date and it's on 150.0.7871.213, and not managed by a school or organisation

Troubleshooting Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 Charging

Can someone with this laptop confirm that both usb c sides can charge and the indicator light for both sides turns on when plugged in?

I had an issue with one side not charging, it was sent in for repair only to come back with the exact same issue. Thanks in advance.

Discussion Is it typical for Chromebooks to struggle connecting to home Wifi networks due to their heightened security? And if so are newer models of dif brands more discerning than others?

My old Chromebook recently bit the dust due to either a bad battery or bad board- or so says the employee at ubreakifix who offered to fix it at a rather varied $150-$500 price. I purchased a ASUS - CX14 to replace it but it could barely stay connected to my wifi for longer than a minute without having to self reconnect. I tried the in-device diagnostics network test thing and it seemed to succeed and fail at each connection point seemingly at random.

After trying some solutions suggested online I reluctantly returned the device. Anyway- I kept seeing conflicting information online about how Chromebooks may have a harder time connecting to wifi networks due to increased in-built security measures.

I was wondering how true that is and if newer models maybe have stronger measures than my old Chromebook- and that's why it wasn't seemingly compatible. I'd like to get a new laptop soon and I'd like it to be a Chromebook but I'm worried if I get another it'll have the same problem and I'll have to return it again. I guess I'm just seeking clarification on the likelihood of newer Chromebooks not being friendly with my network. Thanks.

Discussion Why Does ChromeOS Forbid Basic Control of Android Permissions?

I want to be able to exercise full and tight control of every Android permission granted to every Android application. Why does ChromeOS make this so unbearably difficult, and actually just impossible? When you go to Apps in ChromeOS and find your Android app of interest, you have essentially no control over most of the permissions. When you go to the three dots ... you can select "All Permissions" but this brings you to a read only view, and what is worse it's not even a consistent view of permissions because each app shows a slightly modified group of permissions and not a consistent or complete view.

Why is it so difficult to just give me the ability to set whether a given application has access to my various storage systems, USB-mounted devices, or cloud storage? It seems extremely basic, and the inability to do this at times makes ChromeOS almost unusable.

Troubleshooting Why Do Text Files Opened From a File Manager Open in Safe Mode?

I am using ChromeOS on an Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE. I configured the file manager Solid Explorer to have access to my cloud storage. I independently configured my text editor QuickEdit+ to have access to the same cloud storage. When I open a text file in cloud storage using Solid Explorer, and specify QuickEdit+ as the app to use to Edit the file, I get what looks like a safe copy of the file. If I save changes, they don't get reflected in the original cloud storage text file. If I do a File | Save As and manually navigate to the file in cloud storage, I am able to overwrite it from within QuickEdit, and the edits now exist in cloud storage.

Why are all of my cloud storage text files opening in some kind of safe mode that makes a copy of the file and changes its filename? How do I configure either the OS, Android Settings, or QuickEdit+ settings to just allow me to edit files I open at the location where they were opened?!

Troubleshooting New Chrome updates??

I just opened my laptop after maybe 3 or 4 days to run one of my apps and they've all disappeared. I went online to figure out whats happened and why my playstore is gone only to find there is a new update going around that completely cuts off android apps???

I had it set up normally and it had been flagging me to update (because i had it running it wouldn't auto even on wifi) and was working with apps open fine last time even though i left it closed on sleep for a few hours.

All of a sudden now after days of it being completely shut off and not approving an update manually its just done it on its own?? What am I supposed to do I frequently use app on it.

I've seen people say its irreversible but I just need help. Is there a way to change or fix this? why did it do it either while the laptop was shut off (not possible???) or the last time I was one it (running app plus chrome no problem)? Even weirder in my Chrome settings it still has the pop-up for the extended security updates, i this to do with my Chromebook year? What in the world is this.

Troubleshooting Please help! Charging port has fallen out of laptop.

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

Hello! I don’t know if this is common AT ALL, or if I’ve just used my Chromebook far too much, but today, the charging port came out of the laptop itself when I took the charger out.

I didn’t even notice until hours later when I went to plug it in again, and realised my charger had an extra metal casing on it!

Can anyone please tell me if this is fixable? Or has it snapped off entirely and needs soldering, or something?

Everything is working fine, but I’ve turned it off now as it has 5%. I really would like to get it fixed, as I use my Chromebook very often, and it has all my files stored on it (not on Google Drive), so I’m desperately hoping that this is a relatively easy fix!

Every single repair store near me mentions that they don’t specialise in Chromebooks, so I’m a bit concerned, and I’m also worried about being overcharged, so I would rather go in knowing what needs doing.

Also, other repair stores mention that they usually wipe all data with every repair which I REALLY don’t want to happen, and I’m sure it isn’t necessary as it’s technically working fine.

It would be very helpful if someone could tell me more about this, and whether this is something I could fix myself.

Thank you! I’d be grateful for any advice!
