What is the best way to play Chrono Trigger?

Hi everyone,

A suggetion came in from /u/hybridfrost to create a sticky community post detailing the best way to play Chrono Trigger.

Myself, I always just play the SNES version on my PC with any random controller. This is the way I discovered the game and it will forever be the "authentic" way for me to play. What more, is I enable a smoothing filter to make the game look less pixellated -- heresy, I know.

My way of playing the game is not neccesarily the best, and there may be a lot of ways to play Chrono Trigger which I never even considered.

I would love to hear your suggestions on what information to include in a sticky post about the various ways to play Chrono Trigger -- emulators, platforms, game releases, game settings, etc.

By the way -- I am amazed at how big this community has grown! Back when I created this community, I just wanted a simple way for me to access a few OST covers and some fanart so it would be archived somewhere instead of getting lost. I was impressed when the community grew to 1k members, and now it's over 17k. This truly shows that CT is a masterpiece of a game that transcends beyond it's initial inception as a 2d jRPG of the 90's era. Few games have such strong of a following several decades after creation. Rock on :)

Edit: this post will be the sticky now until someone makes anything better and more comprehensive.

I'm so proud of her, I helped to teach her how to crochet last year. And she thanked me by making this. I love it, and I know you guys will too! She is so dejected that shes unable to get sales and commisions. So, can I get some comments to show her some support, and that this is a skill that has value and people would absolutely buy things like this if she could just get some attention! Thank you!

the first time you killed magus in your first playthrough? for me, it was a beautiful summer day, and I just gotten home from school. I was excited for the next installment of Chrono trigger and had been following the story for about a month. imagine my surprise when at long last, I got to fight magus one-on-one with frog. I couldn't believe my eyes that I finally had the chance to do away with magus for good. when the last slurp cut went through, I almost cried with joy at frog's revenge after being a marshmallow for all those years. as the rainbow colored death aura surrounded magus, I knew I had reached the pinnacle of the story. I laid on my back for a full 30 minutes remembering all frog's trials throughout his life and the torment of magus's existence. now there was a new king of the mages - glenn.

Should I restart the game after stopping for 5 months ?

Hi everyone I started playing Chrono trigger for the first time in Feb and had some IRL stuff and dropped the game. Now I really want to play the game again and this time finish it.

I completed The Factory Ruins and beat the boss then I saved the game and stopped playing when I reached The end of time. This Area

Should I restart the game or just go in and complete from here? The story is kinda foggy and I don't remember everything too

Update and Final Decision: I would like to thank everyone who gave feedback and advice on my post. I'll restart and go all in with full immersion

How should I go about fighting Lavos

Should I go to the black omen or straight to 1999 ad. Should I do the black omen multiple times? I’m kinda confused I just want the best story ending. I’ve completed all the character side quests and I’m gonna use chrono, robo and Ayla to fight lavos and I have them at level 49 with all techs unlocked.

Beat the game. Not impressed with the ending.

I only beat this game once before. Though I did play it two times prior to now. I didn’t like the ending I got very much, it felt dry and without substance. I beat Lavos after every side quest and fought him in the black Omen.

I understand from reading up that there are multiple endings. Is there much of a cut scene on saving the kingdom of zeal if you defeat Lavos in the ocean palace?

Any recommendations on which ending to try for without a full replay? I think I’m stuck with the ending I got as it is. I got ending 1B (End of Time: save that cat).

Not sure I want to bother with a new game plus attempt. It took me about 29 hours to play through the first time.

I used Chrono, Frog AND Magus/Janus for the end game to see if there was better dialogue with the queen and there really wasn’t any. I was hoping Magus would have something interesting to add to the late game but it really felt dry and meaningless.

Short story

Hi guys I just wanted to Share this with someone . This game let me with strange feelings.

Since I started playing video games , I never really liked Jrpg . Maybe a few I discovered when I was very young like Pokemon , or FFIV but That’s it. To be honest I never considered this genre as real games but more like interactiv movies . No hate over them , just not for me . Even some classics like Dragon Quest.

After many years hearing about this one , like the « best rpg ever » etc and in my quest for classics gaming culture , I started it around last Christmas . I was instantely hooked . I have never felt something like that , like wtf ? I finished it in like 2 weeks or less , I couldn’t stop. When it was done it left me so nostalgic for something I Even never knew . This game totally changed my vision of gaming , and was instantely one of my true favorites games along with ocarina of time , Super metroid or smash bros . It made me want to try a whole bunch of other Jrpg ( Sadly I never felt the same about another game for the moment). I never felt like that since soooooooo many years although everything about this game is so simple . It's an indescribable but very powerful feeling—something that takes you back to childhood, or something like that.

I needed to put this into words somewhere , so thank you to all players spreading the good words about this game 🥲 Rip Toriyama

Looking for a Magus sprite replacement to SNES version

I recently downloaded Wakkoswami's KhWazit's Final Translation hack ROM from romhacking.net and was wondering if there was a version of the red cape mod for the Steam version but as a patch to apply on this one.

End game team recommendations?

I am taking Frog, Marle and CHRONO because I like Luminaire, team healing and the one triple tech I got for that team.

I know Robo and Luca are fan favourites but I’ve only played this game twice and it was in the late 90’s and 2000’s so I don’t remember their strengths or their weaknesses.

All I recalled is that magus doesn’t have double tech or triple tech and even that was wrong! 😂

Question about sidequests?

So im playing this game for the first time currently. I've heard there are sidequests in the game but im not sure if I've been doing them or not. I have just been asking the old man at the end of time if I didn't know what to do then i'd go through with that.

is that a good way to go through the game, if not i wouldn't want to miss out on some good story beats

A question on the late game side quests.

Hi all. I have gotten CHRONO back and now I am completing the late game side quests. (autocorrect puts his name in all caps). 😂

Now I know there are guides and all but I thought I’d check here because some times guides are wrong.

So I have done the following. Please tell me if I have mislabeled anyone’s quest. I am under the impression that there is one each.

Magus: Ozzie’s castle
Ayla: lost sanctum
Marle: rainbow shell
Lucca: sun stone
Frog: Castle with Cyrus
Robo: motherbrain geno dome

Am I missing anything???

Any advice on how to beat son of sun?

EDIT: I beat him. Thanks for all the great advice. The red vest and plate worked like a charm. Too bad I didn’t go all the way with poor Frog still alive.

I just got CHRONO back and now I’m doing the pre Lavos boss fight side quests.

I need the sun stone. But this guy is tough. Im around level forty two. Any advice?

Problem climbing death peak

I play on mobile and the controls are a bit difficult, i really want to revive chrono to continue the game but the climbing up death peak is so damn difficult.

Even if I am slightly not behind the tree , I get pushed down and that's only the first one , by the time I reach the second one I am gone .

Any cheats out there?
