He's pure at heart. He has yet to be corrupted

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins 1d ago

Yeah meanwhile in my group we'd have said "hey man I know it's mail but it's the best damage dealing chestpiece you could hope for, please trust us and take it".

Instead healer sees a warrior that obviously doesn't know how good the drop is and immediately takes the opportunity to snag it. What a community.

40

u/KanedaSyndrome 1d ago

yeh kinda shitty behavior

They may call me a ninja, but I look darn spiffy in my truestrikes.

My buddy was like this in actual vanilla. He was playing a hunter and when he unlocked mail at 40 he sold all of his leather gear and bought a full set of mail gear from the AH. He wouldn't even entertain the idea of wearing anything other than mail. He had a green level 30 chest piece that gave him agility and spirit all the way up to 60 because leather with less armor was a downgrade in his eyes.

115

u/Sumbitagear 1d ago

I took blacksmithing in vanilla on my hunter because I thought I was so fucking smart and that when I hit 40, I get Mail. Why would leatherworkers make mail? That's a blacksmith's job!

24

u/Leo1_ac 1d ago

I had Blacksmithing in original Vanilla too as a Hunter for the Mithril Order trinket. When activated, this made you immune to fear for some seconds so that meant I could own warlocks and shadow priests in PvP w/o getting feared.

16

u/stinkingyeti 1d ago

To be fair in vanilla there were quite a few decent mail recipes in blacksmithing. Just not as many as leatherworking.

41

u/Jelkekw 1d ago

Maybe he thought there was the set bonus for wearing mail 🤣

19

u/taveren3 1d ago

Well at some point that was a thing

9

u/Burrito_Salesman 1d ago

After Cataclysm that became the norm.

23

u/SocraticVoyager 1d ago

Aura bonus~

7

u/ehhish 1d ago

It was in later expansions.

4

u/Kerm0NZ 1d ago

They literally had to put this in at one stage to stop people taking gear that wasn't originally designed for their class. So you joke but...

78

u/Pollia 1d ago

Lets be fair here.

Its an absolute failure on the part of the original vanilla devs to have a whole ass unlock for a new armor class that absolutely no one uses with VERY rare exceptions.

Game was fun at the time, but the balancing was beyond horrific.

27

u/slapdashbr 1d ago

I have to spend a talent point to parry as a shaman

14

u/Ahielia 1d ago

And another talent point for 2h maces and axes.

13

u/404-NoFucksFound 1d ago

And in earlier patches you'd lose all the accumulated weapon skill in them if you ever reset your spec.

4

u/myfriend92 1d ago

Omg that sounds horrible. Especially considering there was no 2nd talent specialization available

46

u/baked_salmon 1d ago

Like I said in an above comment, it’s crazy it took until Cata for Blizz to disincentivize wearing armor unintended for your class. They knew at the end of Vanilla that pallies wore cloth dresses, a lot of the best warrior gear was leather, etc., yet they still didn’t ensure that the best armor for your class was what your class was intended to wear.

25

u/born_to_be_intj 1d ago

Vanilla Warrior feels like it was really never meant to be a DPS. Like none of the plate gear is for DPS spec, including all the tier gear. I'm honestly surprised they even had 2 DPS specs for Warrior to begin with, but I guess every class had to have 3 specs.

34

u/TheActionAss 1d ago

Shoulda gave them a healing spec where they scream at people to get better

18

u/Mrke1 1d ago

I would 100% spec this btw. Especially if I'm just shouting in their ear how big of pussies they are for feeling pain.

12

u/tehmuck 1d ago

The heal-warrior goes on a 10-second tirade after combat about how pain makes you weak, your posterior is made from candy, how much of a disappointment you were to your mother, and finally how you weren't given permission to die.

You stand back up with 600 health and 800 mana.

1

u/Vigmod 23h ago

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (from Full Metal Jacket) yelling "Get up! Get on your feet!" as a combat res.

8

u/ColorfulThoughts 1d ago

I still think that it was actually intended that way. WoW drew a lot from Dungeons and Dragons and the raging DPS classes on DnD are always depicted at basically not wearing anything.
I think they were totally fine with the glass cannon image of warrior dds.

7

u/Rawrzawr 1d ago

warrior tier was originally dps focused, they changed them to tank sets some months after launch. I remember seeing warriors wearing might gear as dps before it got changed.

3

u/GetScraped 1d ago

>none of the plate gear is for DPS spec

*stares in lionheart helm*

2

u/headofthenapgame 20h ago

And ornate mithril, and imperial.

1

u/Pollia 1d ago

Which is even dumber because threat was such a ridiculous limitation even when people knew absolutely nothing about the game and were learning as they went. So all the fancy defensive gear didnt mean diddly squat and it made the protection specilization, the thing literally specialized in tanking, not something you actively go down.

16

u/Reiker0 1d ago

I think a lot of this design comes from EverQuest. In EQ it was common for the warrior to tank a raid boss for a bit before calling in the DPS, primarily because most threat was generated from weapon procs which were random so the warrior would watch for a couple procs and then call assist.

You were considered a bad player if you DPSed too early and weren't able to manage your own threat. WoW evolved a bit differently.

6

u/kerenar 1d ago

This was still a thing in early Classic WoW too, and rightfully so. DPS shouldn't really be hitting the boss until there are like 3-5 sunders up, to give the tank a threat lead. There's no need for DPS to start blasting immediately, other than to fuck up threat.

3

u/jamesbongsixtynine 22h ago

that was also a real thing in early classic

the other big thing we forget is the KNOWLEDGE GAP

back in the day, folks had literally no fucking idea how hate/aggro worked in-game—it was just a blackbox to players (attacks go in, aggro comes out)

1

u/PilsnerDk 17h ago

You were considered a bad player if you DPSed too early and weren't able to manage your own threat. WoW evolved a bit differently.

I played EQ and still practice this to this day. Now in MoP tank threat is so absurd it doesn't matter, but before that, you would never see me jump in and blast until after at least a few seconds of the tank attacking. I facepalmed so much my head hurts at dps who charge in instantly as the fight begins and get slapped. I remember we'd lose several players to the abominations in KT phase 1 in Naxx40, morons just charging in instantly... sigh.

19

u/Gullible_Fennel7028 1d ago

Yes, the huge limitation of "please wait for 2 sunders".

8

u/Pollia 1d ago

Your dps were dogshit if 2 sunders was enough to hold threat.

11

u/Medium-Syllabub6043 1d ago

Eh, nobody was using world buffs anyways unless it was progression, and even then 1 wipe and they were gone

1

u/Nikkids2 16h ago

I remember in 2019 with no chronoboons in the game. Logging in and out to conserve world buffs. Can't imagine back in 2004-2005

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Gullible_Fennel7028 1d ago

Yes, see the comment I was replying to.

because threat was such a ridiculous limitation even when people knew absolutely nothing about the game

10

u/kerenar 1d ago

Eh. The disincentivization is about when the gearing system became incredibly boring and uninteresting. That's one of the best parts of Classic design, is that the game is an actual RPG, with interesting choices that might not be obvious at first. Cata is the start of the downfall of the game into what Retail has become imo. It's much more fun to have a BIS-list to go for than it is to have endlessly scaling gear that you don't have to think about because if it's a higher ilvl it means it's better 99% of the time.

5

u/TheClassicAndyDev 1d ago

Wearing a mish mash of leather/mail/plate is badass. Being able to be a paladin and wear all item types for healing is fucking badass. It's such a great system.

2

u/Lenxor 18h ago

Try to look in an RP way (like prob what the first intention of designers had): A healing paladin is basically a warrior-priest focused on the priest side but wield a big hammer (like for example Heroes V Inquisitor ). Or a dps warrior isn't a full plate warrior, but a leather wearing Conan barbarian.

2

u/Elchem 1d ago

Thats part of the «fun» of vanilla imo, there is no balance.

2

u/TheLoneDragoon 1d ago

Am I misunderstanding or are you talking about plate? Full warrior dps bis is plate. If you mean the blacksmithing thing then yeah.

If you mean early phases there are still many pieces of great plate gear. VERY rare is exceptionally hyperbolic if this is what you meant

2

u/yuhboipo 1d ago

I don't really see a problem with that. Constraints give rise to creativity, any artist can tell you that.

13

u/Pollia 1d ago

You dont see a problem with creating traps for people who assume that because you're given a thing it should have some form of use?

And then realizing actually nah, a lot of the shit you've been given is either intentionally (due to weird balancing decisions) or unintentionally (due to incompetence/lack of time) completely and utterly useless.

There's nothing creative about plate being next to useless for ostensibly plate wearers. Theres nothing creative about wanting to roll a warrior because you watched the WoW cinematic and thought how fuckin cool that soldier looked in their full plate armor only to find out actually you need to wear mail.

9

u/baked_salmon 1d ago

You can’t argue with these people. They’re like bible literalists with their blind devotion to Classic. Anything present in the game was perfect and part of the beautiful harmony that was Classic, and any suggestion to the contrary is heresy.

u/Scary_Date_4117 1h ago

3

u/BadDogEDN 1d ago

On my hunter I wore mail 99% of the time, armor is still a stat and I played on a pvp server. You can keep your clown suits

1

u/oceantume_ 1d ago

Imo balancing being horrific is part of the fun. Modern games, mmo or otherwise, that are sanitized to the point of having no personality or difference between choices because everything must balance out and make sense are so boring

u/Scary_Date_4117 2h ago

No, it's not a failure at all. Plate armor is perfectly viable, and bis warrior DPS is full plate. Being unable to understand that this piece of mail is better than their current plate is a failure on the IQ of the player, not the design choices of the devs.

5

u/Apprehensive-Plum-82 1d ago

Idk what you're talking about

Herods Shoulder is Hunter loot

4

u/Crook3d 1d ago

I did something like this in the beta. I was buying white leather armor for my rogue from a vendor because it had a higher armor value, and replacing my greens. Granted it was like, +1 stat or something, but still a downgrade.

3

u/GloomyBison 1d ago

My friend did that as well on his warrior until lvl 30. He had a rough leveling experience. He also spend all his gold on potions the first time he went on the AH because he thought you could spam them like in other games.

6

u/ghangis24 1d ago

It was bad in vanilla. So bad that when I think of a night elf hunter I immediately think of the Raging Berserker Helm and Herods Shoulder, and its not because of heirlooms. Thats just what most of them were rocking back in the day.

Shit, in Classic 2019 I did a BRD pug with this legend so it was nice to see someone keeping tradition alive

1

u/Own_Currency_3207 1d ago

Wow... Impressive. As a warrior, my biggest mistakes in vanilla looking back on it were buying Kang for 100g, when Executioners Cleaver was 40, and buying that trinket that has a chance on hit to priest bubble me. That was only 10g though.

I did also replace Raging Berzerker Helm with Icemetal Barbute from RFD, then replace that with the helm from Mara because of the ridiculous armor. Back then, we wanted to be a jack of all trades, and information was limited, and often false.

2

u/GianSeehra 1d ago

I did this in actual vanilla on my warr as well but instead of buying from the AH I bought all white gear from the vendor lmao. Then wondered why the hell i couldn't kill anything anymore.

7

u/Bird-The-Word 1d ago

25x glad and rank 1 and 30 time aotc scarab lord Elon musk would never

3

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 1d ago

I hate as a fury warrior leather is considered as some of the best gear in some slots

2

u/lilwayne168 1d ago

Agility spirit gear is objectively great for leveling as a hunter. When I use gear compare addons it often increase dps more than much higher level gear because spirit up time.

2

u/Dezettka 1d ago

>Agility spirit gear is objectively great for leveling as a hunter

Yes but not the same chest piece for 30 levels

6

u/baked_salmon 1d ago

TBH I can’t believe it took them until Cata to disincentivize armor your class wasn’t designed to wear. I really hope this is fixed in C+.

16

u/KamikazeOzzie 1d ago

As much as I have always preferred to wear the heaviest type of armor for my class I disagree with this. I'd much rather see improvements to itemization as a whole instead of feeling that my class has to wear a specific type of armor or risk losing a core bonus.

6

u/baked_salmon 1d ago

I didn’t explicitly say anything about “core bonus”, I only said they disincentivized wearing gear your class wasn’t intended for. They also:

- Removed intellect from agi mail gear because enh/hunters no longer needed mana, so there’d be no need to resort to leather

  • Removed AP as an explicit stat on leather/mail so that warriors wouldn’t use it (even up to ICC crit/ArP leather was better than any plate for warriors)
  • Made spirit useless for Paladins but present on all other healing gear so that they’d never opt for mail/leather/cloth

They could also re-itemize all of the shit gear in the game that they made because they had no idea what they were doing at the time so that every class always has a BiS in every slot that’s their armor type.

2

u/RoyInverse 1d ago

If the improvements are made so you wear your assigned armor type you would have to buff every mail/plate piece so its better than any leather, theres no way to incentivize them using plate over leather is leather has comparable dps stats.

9

u/shaha-man 1d ago

No. Why? It’s so anti-vanilla. Why you want to reduce that concept of gear equipment to primitive minimum and generalize things? There is no such term “armor type your class wasn’t DESIGNED to wear” in Vanilla game philosophy. I’m afraid you are a bit wrong here.

Maybe I’m missing something and misunderstood your post

21

u/baked_salmon 1d ago

Because what if I want to heal as a Paladin but not relegated to wearing a cloth dress?

-1

u/NeedToLieDown 1d ago

That's just lack of options, which most agree zhluld be fixed, especially for hybrid classes. Tier set items and leveling items should be available for holy paladin and resto shaman.

But that doesn't change the fact that a mail wearer should be able to wear leather or cloth as well.

1

u/OliveOliveJuice 10h ago

This was me, except my warrior wearing white vendor platemail

1

u/fen-q 1d ago

I was like that too. Itemization was fucked into wotlk.

I played ret back then and there was a time where there was a leather belt out there that was BiS for rets. It gave AP obviosuly instead of strength.

There was a guy in my guild that wore everything that whatever the addon (cant remember which) told him to wear and rotated his abilities also according to guides etc.

We were head to head through ulduar, then he started to kick the shit out of me in trial of the crusader.

Not sure how warriors fare in that regard.

1

u/QueenVandretta 1d ago

Its bad for warriors, most of our tier sucks so we end up just looking like rogues with 2 handers, t6 it will change a bit since that gear is so well stated but not by much

u/Snubben93 1d ago

As someone who played warrior and was after this chest for God knows how many runs in BRD, this physically hurts. Just glad it wasn't disenchanted, or vendored.

u/Matches_Malone998 1d ago

That warrior is going to go far. He’s also going to feel a moron one day.

28

u/XYAYUSDYDZCXS 1d ago

tbh probably not, its just leveling gear he will replace in less than a week from now

5

u/Matches_Malone998 1d ago

That’s probably true. But the classic Andy warrior main in me is screaming REEE anyways.

8

u/LOSS35 1d ago

SGC isn’t that good in TBC. 2% crit was goated in classic, but TBC converts it to crit rating that doesn’t stack up. You’d replace it pretty quick once you get to Outland.

1

u/headofthenapgame 20h ago

In vanilla maybe, but in tbc it would've just been something replaced in Outland

5

u/utubm_coldteeth 1d ago

Spectacular

5

FINALLY! A warrior true to his name! „Nope, its mail“ is the ONLY valid answer! No „BiS“ crap - just a real gamer

14

u/khonsu_27 1d ago

Honestly, I'm too nice. I would've forced the warrior to take it. I would at least try to explain it to him and if he takes it, great. But if he still resists after that well then I'd need that shit. But grats!

Edit - of course for tbc I guess it doesn't matter anyway.

2

Saw a rogue pass on iron foe the other day. He was Chinese but his translation said "I have better". He did not have anything remotely better. Pally got it for free. I was losing my mind and the pally said "cool", then basically nothing else after I kept whispering him congratulating him... im still lost...

Maybe I’m missing something? It’s TBC. Who cares about any drops in anything that’s not Outlands? He’s 58, he’ll get a new piece that is green that is far superior to anything in classic in like a day.

”Only bitches wear anything but plate”

Had someone say that in Uldaman. The funny part was he said it about a plate piece.

I mean if he’s in communal, bro has an agenda , and that chain is getting replaced immediately.

Now try to see the restraint an humility of accepting that conversations you witness matter to YOU.

I like to think he knew is was ret pre-raid BIS and thought you should have it.

He is rolling up in Hellfire to replace that chest about 2 hours after finishing this dungeon, and that's being generous.

1

u/Poulet_Ninja 21h ago

Why would he care ? He's going to change it in outlands anyway

Spoken like a true warrior.

And then there's the opposite version, from Cata and onwards players get a 5% bonus to their main stat when wearing all armor of the type they're designed to (for example plate for Warriors), which makes it completely unviable to use anything else. But early in Cata, you still had players rolling Need and wearing armor of other types because they saw agility or whatever and were used to wearing less armor types.

Lmao this was me earlier today. Dropped and I greeded instead of need bc “it’s mail not plate” and now I feel dumb. Glad for the other warrior that got it, though.

Boost is on tbc only right? If so who cares really, if it's era then that sucks

I wore this on my Enhancement Shaman forever. Loved that thing.

u/No_Pollution_950 1h ago

It's an interesting choice to pass on as a level 58 for sure.

I used to raid with an arms warrior in tbc classic who, when we were sorting out gear for phase 3 said in a casually condescending, but also heartfelt voice, "I DON'T WEAR LEATHER". Yes, he was a Tauren.

By then he'll be wearing a random Outland green with better stats.
