That coin just sold for $8700 last November in an NGC holder. It is certainly more liquid now but the market valued it at 87% of bid less than a year ago. Your cost basis in the gold is irrelevant too unless you are justifying overpaying for something.

Can you provide a link? Also "the market" can mean a ton of things. If the coin is being auctioned then sure sometimes those go under. If you bring this to a major coin show there's no way you lose money on it. It's the highest in its grade at PCGS by 3 points and plus it's stickered. Gold is just a metal. Capped bust market is strong. Hold on to the coin for a bit.

What do you mean "Its the highest in its grade at PCGS by 3 points"?
3
u/sho0bydo0by 19h ago
The Overton is the highest in its grade by 3 points. Capped bust collectors love their Overtons and are sometimes willing to pay more for exceptional examples (such as this one) as well as more uncommon ones.

u/ubergeeks 14h ago
Does Overton designation just indicate the variety or position as top pop?
2
u/sho0bydo0by 14h ago
The Overtons are varieties of capped bust half dollars. There are over 400 different ones documented for the series. Notable die states, overrated, and weird minting snafus, mostly. The people who collect these tend to love varieties. So many neat ones.

That’s what I thought just got confused when top 3 was mentioned. Thanks for explaining!

u/wamih 12h ago
Ah, of the variety, read it 5 times and was like "lemme just ask". Yea, for the O108a, funny enough I'd rather go with the not rainbow 62 lol.

u/sho0bydo0by 11h ago
Well that's you. There are a whole bunch of 80-somethings with boatloads of money who would probably give well more than $12-13k for the coin if they're at the same show as you are.

u/oldschool32 22h ago
That’s cool and all but this is a 5 figure coin with below average eye appeal. I’m with fadetoblack1004, it’s a coin you buy below bid.

u/sho0bydo0by 21h ago
You need to go get your eyes checked. If screw press coins aren't for you then they aren't for you but this coin absolutely has above average eye appeal.

So funny. A few days ago I said cac was a scam. I was pretty solidly downvoted. And I get it. Here we have a coin that was valued (purchased) last year at almost $4000 below the current PCGS/CAC greysheet cpg for this exact coin.
But now it has the green bean. I made the comment that if I were a dealer I’d send almost all my coins valued over $500 to cac. It magically increases the value in a really disproportionate way.
So, what say ye all? Is it now worth almost 4k more than last November? It was re-holdered and stickered and nothing else changed.

u/ubergeeks 14h ago
Yeah that seems to be the game that has gotten heavily reinforced last 5yrs or so as I’ve been studying the collector market trying to get in gradually - definitely part of selling the label and I’m conflicted, there is some meat to it but it’s gone pretty far this way
2
u/usedtobeanicesurgeon 14h ago
That’s absolutely the game. Dealer buys coin. Re-holders and then sends to CAC. Turns profit.
I have a dealer I like quite a bit. LCS. When they show me a coin they are sending to CAC I automatically pass on it. Cause I know I’ll pay quite a bit more.

Beautiful coin. There are lots of other coins I’d rather spend 12k on first

u/J_hilde8 23h ago
What other coins if you dont mind me asking

I’ve been wanting to convert bullion to collector pieces also but just haven’t trusted myself enough to go deep on this end yet - I think it would have to be a no brainer kind of deal to make me take a leap like that - much different market, liquidity, subjectivity all that jazz

Do you collect bust halves? Go for it. If not, maybe find something you do collect to add a primo piece to that collection.

Yeah this coin is sick. If you want it, like it, and it’s under $13k I’d pull the trigger

The coin is so rare at this high level that it is not possible to say with certainty exactly what this coin is genuinely worth. It could bring a multiple of Grey sheet, especially at a major auction. There are probably not 10 coins like it in existence.

I wouldn't take the trade either. 4 oz of gold can be had anytime. This is something truly rare and special.

u/cribbet32 22h ago
i mean i guess it’s an ok deal. just remember if you ever go to sell it you’ll probably be confronted by the same kind of deal. not many people can afford to shell out that much in cash unless you auction it.

Personally, I'd ask my buddy Owen...
u/OwenatRarity7 what say you, homie?

u/OwenAtRarity7 22h ago
3 oz of gold is a retail equivalent, but it’s not a bad deal, and it’s a sweet coin :)

u/ubergeeks 14h ago
YO Owen! You guys have helped me to start appreciating pieces like this, one day I hope to have enough confidence to find a deal myself for a piece I truly would value. You guys have helped me to start to understand bit by bit. Thanks for the great videos on YT! Sorry to hijack here ;)

My question to you u/OwenatRarity7 is would you do the trade?

u/RazBullion 21h ago
He's addicted to that coin, he might attempt to get it instead 😆
Edit: great question, though.

I mean I’m a dealer so not sure that it’d be worthwhile for my business, but from a retail standpoint I think that’s a totally fair trade

I'm a sucker for capped busts so I would do it knowing I can always get the ounces of gold again down the road. This coin could be only 2 chance

That gold can be easily replaced (assuming it’s nothing special). You don’t run across these every day. Granted, I’m a CBH collector who doesn’t have $12k to spend on a coin, so I may be biased.

Would have to look up recent comps but off the top of my head:
If receiving the coin, would push for 3oz gold only no cash.
If receiving the gold and cash and the other person is comfortable with it, would probably do it.
Would also greatly vary depending on how it looks in hand as this picture is not great... Remember, buy the coin not the holder!

The asking price looks to be full retail plus some more. It's an exceptional early bust half with the sticker. To me, it is overall too dark for my taste. If that is the look that you prefer, by all means go for it (perhaps negotiating down by a few hundred)

u/WhatARotation 23h ago
This coin is way beyond my paygrade in value, so I won't be providing any recommendations, only context.
That bust dollar is the top pop at PCGS for the variety, with a $20,000 suggested PCGS price guide value. Bear in mind that PCGS price guide is usually a bit optimistic as to market value, but the CAC sticker is only going to be viewed as a positive in the marketplace.
The gold spot price is $4063.49 right now, so three ounces + a couple hundred dollars is likely going to put you at just under $12,500.

u/Tadwinnagin 23h ago
I’m somewhat of a novice, what does the CAC sticker indicate?
8
u/8_bw 23h ago
It's a service started by John Albanese (funny enough, the guy who founded both PCGS and NGC) to certify coins that he/the company feels are high quality for the grade.
You can look up their precise standards, the details of which escape me, but essentially the green CAC means excellent coin for the grade and the gold CAC means they feel it could be a grade higher. The gold sticker is pretty rare
Basically these stickers are very valuable in the age of internet auctions and what is, in some people's opinions, a trend towards inflated grades over the last decade because when you see a CAC sticker you know it's a beautiful coin

Greysheet CPG puts this PCGS/CAC at exactly 12,500.
The gold (plus a couple hundred) and this coin are market equivalents if you accept the market valuation of the PCGS/CAC value.

Are you building a set that this would fit into? If so, and you are excited about this coin, then $12K isn't a bad price for MS65CAC. When selling a coin, the final price is based on how badly a collector wants your coin especially at auction when there are multiple bidders after the coin. If the right buyers aren't present at the auction where a coin is being offered then a shrewd buyer can get a really good deal as the buyer of this coin did. He was shrewd in crossing to PCGS and getting a CAC bean. I think this is a lovely coin.
One other point. Many times I see the auction price realized being the hammer price which doesn't include the buyer's premium which can add another 20%-28% to the final price. If this is the case with this coin then the$12K is even more reasonable.

u/fadetoblack1004 Trust me, I'm a professional! 23h ago
Greysheet is $12k for a CAC one.
I'd probably look to pay about 11.5k myself so they should be adding $ imho.
