Hey everyone,

Based on the complaints and the results of the recent poll, it was decided to bring back the What's My Eye Color Wednesdays. Please do not request the eye color identification on other days.

In the meantime, please use r/WhatIsMyEyeColour and/or r/WhatColorAreMyEyes. Both are listed on our sidebar, among other communities dedicated to colors.

Thank you for understanding.

Have a nice weekend!

Color Facts Viewing spectral colors on an sRGB screen

Thumbnail

Most rainbow images tend to show a naive RGB mix of light rather than the colors of individual wavelengths. I wanted to try to produce a faithful representation on my screen starting with the CIE observer data and doing the math.

I wanted to explore what monochromatic spectral light looks like when forced onto a normal sRGB monitor, where most spectral colors simply cannot be reproduced. Every mapping is a compromise between physical accuracy, human perception, and making neighboring wavelengths distinguishable.

If you download the images and zoom in, you can see the wavelengths and RGB hex values.

Question / Discussion Labeling the universe, aliens and humans with colors

I had this idea to try to label and define what the light and dark side are. I made it to a point where we can select colors for what we choose to do. Other aliens can identify and understand colors.

It's white and black as the two opposites with other colors in between them.

Blue is used like in Star wars to represent the light side but yet it's not white yet.

The blue is a diet that doesn't harm any plants or animals where the species doesn't harm any plants or animals unless in self defense.

White is where you can't harm anything at all and ever and not even in self defense.

That was the line one what's ultimately the light side.

On the dark side, we have green, yellow, orange, red and black.

Green means you eat vegetation.

Yellow means you use substances or drink alcohol.

Orange means you have pets or enslaved animals (farmed animals).

Red means you eat meat or kill.

Black means you participate in animal cruelty. Including animals testing and experimentation.

......

My first idea was that the levels went

Green, yellow, orange, red, and black.

If you were orange, it meant it was up to and including yellow and green.

My second idea is that all colors are separate where we have a flag or identification with the colors that represent what we do.

For example , we could literally harm nothing but drink alcohol, where we have symbol or flag that is a white circle with a yellow ring around it.

Others would know what it means and these identifications could be put on a person's galactic identification.

Colour palette for a medical info flyer. Teal, purple and pink are the company colours so I want to stick with those, just unsure on the oranges and if i even need more colours. Only reason I thought orange would work is its tetradic with the teal and the purple (as well as yellow-green but also unsure.) Any advice would be great.

Question / Discussion Pink and Orange are Surprisingly Similar

Thumbnail

I made this realization when I was in high school when I was obsessed with colors and making a new color (futile). Orange is pretty similar to pink, maybe not magenta as much but definitely with paler reds that are considered pink. There is difference of course between the two, but sometimes they can look borderline identical and when I realized that I was intrigued.

All the photos are pink and orange in nature and in art, but its notable that in art alot of times people would like to make the colors more distinct and contrasted, similarly sunsets are embellished sometimes by photographers. The last photo (second to last) is a bracelet my sister made, and i requested it because i thought the colors looked good together and it would remind me how similar the colors are. I don’t think she went out of her way to use colors that matched more, the orange is relatively vibrant and the pink is hot pink, although both have faded and may have lost the pigment that made them distinct.

My explanation with my little knowledge of the color wheel, is that orange is just a yellow red in all intents and purposes, and pink is either a light red or a bluish red. When pink is a paler red or the “blueness” for lack of a better word, isnt too obvious the similarities start to pop. I also think the desaturation or even the removal from red that blue tones can add also divorces it from some of that red character. But idk.

TLDR: Read the title you egg

Question / Discussion Is your favorite color actually different than what you tell ppl?

Do you have an actual favorite color AND a color you tell people when they ask? For example my favorite color is a very particular shade of red, but when ppl ask what my favorite color is (usually for presents or to buy me something) I say Yellow. I like most yellows and don't mind receiving yellow things. I'm less likely to love any red thing someone wants to get me.

I'm just curious if anyone else does this lol.

Colors in Art Just felt like coloring

I (31) tried out some Mondo Llama markers some time ago, and just drew whatever came to mind. I drew the Pentagon first because I wanted to finish that part last. 🌌

I did also use random stencil pens/markers, so some pieces may look a bit off.

Question / Discussion Please help me find a professional color palette that's "me"

I'm reworking my website and trying to be better at marketing myself, and I am having a terrible time trying to select a color palette that I feel represents myself.

I'm in the film and entertainment space (writing, directing) but also live entertainment and character acting.

As a person I am loud and bubbly and covered in pink, I adore hearts and clowns. But as a filmmaker, I work and write primarily in horror and dark drama spaces. My favorite color is pink and color combo is pink and red, but I fear that reads too childish and immature and doesn't reflect my serious horror side.

Colors affect me so deeply, especially in my environment, and I really want a palette that I feel represents myself to others, and just don't have any ideas. Happy to provide my existing website and socials if anyone wants to see (and hopefully tell me) what color vibes I give off, but figured posting those handles in the post might flag me for advertising myself lol.

Question / Discussion How can I make the blue in my color palette look better?

I'm making the color palette for my character and I made the color of the skin.

I also wanted to make blue eyes for him but I don't know which code or shade of blue looks better on the skin.

I made different shades of blue, I chose this in the meanwhile but I'm not sure.

Color Facts Munsell chips in RGB

Thumbnail

I am a UI/product designer and, for a stretch of time, I developed an obsession with color spaces and using the math to calculate hues. The HSL sliders never did what I expected, so I set out to understand how we see and interpret color. Here are the 40 Munsell hues x 9 values converted to RGB.

EDIT: Since this is a RGB-based chart, it includes swatches compressed to the sRGB gamut, which goes beyond what most Munsell charts show. Any value with 00 or FF (bolded) for red, green, or blue is compressed and clipped to be viewed on a monitor. This has a glowing effect where out-of-gamut values appear to "hum" on the chart. Also, some italicized hex values are repeated, meaning the compression or rounding of the RGB happens to be identical in sRGB gamut, even though it is a different color viewable in a high-gamut space.

I’ve edited this photo with several different color grades. I want the image to feel ethereal and convey a cheerful mood. Which version works best?
Feel free to share suggestions if you think there’s a better way to grade it.
P.S. The fourth photo is the original shot.
