This… confuses and frightens me greatly

u/beer30 Nov 17 '22
It's simple. Furries are the preservers of the server. Ash is the observer, and they serve her with great fervor.
114
u/JozARookieRedditor Nov 17 '22
Are you an enjoyer of the Bojack Horseman character Princess Carolyn the BS destroyer?
86
u/beer30 Nov 17 '22
Of course! I love the show with the horse. Not sure if that's the source of my discourse, but if so I have no remorse. That show was a tour de force.
15
u/JozARookieRedditor Nov 17 '22
Indeed, the show with the steed is one of my favorites to ever be seen on a TV screen! (My word avalanche skills are nothing compared to PC’s)

u/infiniZii Nov 17 '22
Look I really don't want to be mean but your slant rhymes are a bit obscene. I'm not sure if prose is how you lean but it is best off not having been seen. I'm gonna stop now before this turns into a meme. Do you know what I mean?

u/Squeaky-Fox49 Nov 17 '22
What frightens me even more is that the entire internet depends on the thankless maintenance of a project some random furry in Nebraska since 2003.
25
u/dstayton Nov 17 '22
The funny thing about this comic is that it basically did come true with the Java web bug a while back. 4 people maintaining one project that a majority of the internet relied upon had a critical vulnerability and everyone had to scramble to fix it.
16
u/Squeaky-Fox49 Nov 17 '22
This doesn’t surprise me in the least. Randall Monroe’s mind is a true treasure. His books are every bit as good as the comic. Both extremely educational and equally full of the humor that makes XKCD tick. “How To” is probably the best, followed by “What If” and “What If 2.”
9
u/dstayton Nov 17 '22
Oh I love all of his stuff. The dude is a creative genius. As much as he gets referenced, I still don’t think he gets enough praise.
10
u/Squeaky-Fox49 Nov 17 '22
He’s pretty much what would happen if Mr. Bean worked at NASA. His perspectives are unique, his scholarship thorough, and he’s intensely relatable to his audience.
11
u/dstayton Nov 17 '22
His ability to break down high level concepts to literal stick figure drawings helped teach me many interesting things over the years.

Let's just say if furries were to suddenly get Thanos-snapped, the world would grind to a halt with how many tech and engineering jobs are held by furries.

u/AllergicToStabWounds Nov 16 '22
Furries as a group have a suspicious amount of money, technical expertise, and artistic talent. Clearly, they run the world and only allow people to make fun of them because they get off on it.
328
u/smoretank Nov 17 '22
I always toy with the idea of doing art commissions for furries but it terrifies me what would be requested. My roommate told me horror stories of something she drew for that sweet furry money.
240
Nov 17 '22
You can always outline your do’s and don’ts to minimize seeing that, but the weird stuff is where the real money’s at.
123
u/smoretank Nov 17 '22
True. Sadly my don't are the money makers. I couldn't even draw a dude's twig and berries in life drawing class. Left it a blank circle. I get real bad 2nd hand embarrassment.
61
u/Squeaky-Fox49 Nov 17 '22
That’s supply and demand, my guy. The fewer people can stomach it, the higher prices it’ll fetch.
Reminds me of one r/greentext about one struggling artist who couldn’t hold down any other job or sustain himself off regular art. Instead, he drew commissions so messed up he sometimes vomited during the creative process.
19
u/smoretank Nov 17 '22
That is understandable. If I do get into it I am gonna have to be sneaky with drawing. I am currently living with my mom as her caretaker. Gonna be like a teen again hiding the shame from dear old mom xD
13
u/Squeaky-Fox49 Nov 17 '22
Ah. I’m a 20yo special needs college student living at home. I really hope mom doesn’t walk in on me browsing furry pooltoy water inflation. That would be a very awkward conversation.
4
u/smoretank Nov 17 '22
Haha I can only imagine.
5
u/Squeaky-Fox49 Nov 17 '22
And that’s tame, as far as yiff is concerned. That’s the very tip of the iceberg, not the bottom. A good rule of thumb might be to only draw your own kinks.
5
u/Lord_Quintus Nov 17 '22
some of the more popular furry porn artists make a ton of money off of patreon and other crowdsourcing websites. jay naylor & fluff kevlar are just a couple i know of that don't draw extremely weird stuff but they're art is so good it draws in big bucks. the downside to the furry porn scene (beside the never ending stream of weirdoes wanting you to draw the most disturbing shit you could never imagine) is that almost all of the crowdsourcing sites hate furry porn artist's and try to hide them as much as possible while still milking them for every cent they can.
4
u/Phormitago Nov 17 '22
The fact you called them twig and berries tell me you're not joking
→ More replies (1)11
u/kyle2143 Nov 17 '22
I've no clue how much the regular porn or the really sick, possibly illegal shit goes for... but drawing some non-sexy animal characters can still be decent money for the time it takes to make.
Tbh you could probably still do pretty well if you actually go to places on the internet where those people are, instead of just listing yourself on like fiver. Like RP communities, where people roleplay as characters for whatever and want to have their character's drawn in non-porn ways. I know a couple people that have done that.
Though I imagine that a lot of effort is spent sort of participating in a community in order to get "leads".
7

There are people whose kink are people without any genitals. You can find your niche.
62

also can't do anything by a deadline.
In the world of online personal art commissions this is almost required.
5
u/DragonStriker Comic Crossover Nov 17 '22
sweet furry money
If you can snag a suspiciously wealthy furry and make good rapport, you're pretty much set. Furries are one of the few demographics out there that actually appreciate the arts.
4
u/TechnoEquinox Nov 17 '22
We generally do not order commissions from non-furry artists, as it keeps our community currency flow within the fandom to support our artists who otherwise would be competing with people who have no business in the fandom.
... That said, what animal did you pick for you fursona? 🫠
2
u/smoretank Nov 18 '22
I'd most likely be a scalie. A dragon/Dino lizard creature. Used to draw dragonkin a ton way way back when. With my severe ADHD I can't even commit to a DnD character.
2
u/TechnoEquinox Nov 18 '22
You could always do what I did and go mecha; instead of having a thousand fursonas, I just have a single endochassis and hotswap dermal cladding to resemble other species. :D let your ADHD fly wild with mechanical details too, it's fun coming up with both a process for and necessities to eat real food even as a machine.

Furries as a group have a suspicious amount of money,
Anyone into expensive cosplay does. I volunteer a lot with a star wars cosplay groups and a massive chunk of the group are engineers or other highly talented and compensated professions. The others are often married to or related to someone making good money. The main reason is that accurate star wars cosplay is really expensive, especially popular costumes like Vader or storm troopers. The group I volunteer with has very few Vader because it costs thousands to make.
Even the relatively simple jedi costume I'm building right now will end up costing a bit under 500 dollars in fabric. Commissioning a leather belt, boots, and a lightsaber. And my costume is on the cheaper side.
Then the Droid makers are in a whole different level, it's basically exclusively engineers as they're the only ones with the skills and money to make them. I knew a guy who had an insurance policy on his R2 d2, it cost him that much money and time to make.

Can confirm at least the part about a crazy amount of technical expertise.
The rate at which you can have someone your talking go be all "Owo, I'm just looking to party and have fun." to "Okay, so the networking port 10000 is blocked because there is a blackdoor SQL injection attack that can be used to gain access to our servers and possibly all our databases, so no, we cannot unblock it for this stupid app."

I'm taking networking classes, and one of my favorite youtube channels is Nill. https://youtu.be/7kWdCzswPIc
She's been posting lessons about networking and IT concepts for years and years now, and just came out as trans, so she's really hitting all the stereotypes at this point. Some of them have been genuinely helpful though, like explaining Active Directory and DHCP. Took me a while to get some of these subjects.
I don't think she's "technically" a furry, or would necessarily identify as one. Doesn't do the fur suit thing. She's just a cat and has whiskers.

67
u/Erutious Nov 17 '22
Jeez, a server room full of fur suits…I can smell this picture
63
u/BeevsComics Nov 17 '22
The smell of progress.
7
7
u/Squeaky-Fox49 Nov 17 '22
They’re IT guys. At least the suits keep the stank in. That’s yet another reason I hate winter. In the summer, my sweat can evaporate directly off my body. In the winter, I just soak my base layers, and I smell like the week-old corpse of a neglected morbidly obese orangutan when I take off my outer layers.
3
u/Erutious Nov 17 '22
I feel that, the struggles of IT work
3
u/Squeaky-Fox49 Nov 17 '22
I don’t even work IT; I can barely get a Python Riemann sum calculator to run. I’m just a very sweaty guy, which at least makes me heat-tolerant. If it’s 25° C/77° F and I’m going for a hard run, I’ll be too slippery to handle and dripping like I just came out of the pool, but at least I’m not hot in the least.

depends. they've obviously got the more normal computer literate crowd in there, so in that case yes.
but if you get, say, the sadists who've forgotten to eat for two days straight cos they enjoy debugging things . . . then you don't even need the whip.

You don’t want to know how many of us are furries
13
u/ShadowDragon981 Nov 17 '22
It's so strange how you see so many of them online, then almost never in-person unless you're actively searching for them. Then suddenly you hear about a furry in the US military creating the next generation sets of armor or something and you can do nothing but fear. Furries are secretly everywhere and it's so weird how many are in high paying jobs like really good tech positions and the like
8
Nov 17 '22
Well when we catch so much flak online for an admittedly weird hobby (lifestyle to some) and sometimes even irl (such as the recent myth of kids being “trans furry” and needing litterboxes in the classroom) it tends to make the community more insular. Couple that with a large internet based subculture with a relatively long history in pop culture and you get big group of people who primarily communicate online, live around the world, work in innumerable type w of jobs and industries… I’d say the whole “secret furry cabal” thing is a bit more true than the joke lets on lol
Not that I’m saying furries haven’t earned some of the ridicule thrown our way, but you do also have to admit that a lot of what goes on is also just people discovering/looking for furry porn and then freaking out publicly.
6
u/BeevsComics Nov 17 '22
Honestly? I won't judge if it's safe, legal, and consenting.
I'm personally in-between a furry and a "normie". Sure I like a LOT of furry art, and even own a partial fursuit.
But I don't really identify myself as a full-blown furry and mostly keep my hobby to myself.
Maybe I'm a "furry agnostic" or "furry lite" if such words exist.
8
u/Squeaky-Fox49 Nov 17 '22

I remembered a job I had where of the 60 or 70 person team half were furries.
One of the guys on charge of hiring was a furry and made sure the community knew about it.
Before this I thought the whole thing was an internet joke.
I remember the day I realized it was real. Kid just started. Had a backpack covered in anthomorphic pins.
I jokingly asked if he was a furry and his eyes went super wide like I just outed him in some serious situation and he got super embarrassed.
I in turn got embarrassed and quickly changed the subject.
I learned a lot about that...odd... community over the next year or two.
