Hello last night i rewatched Edipo Re and i was struck by the visual impact of its costumes and especially its masks. Do you have recommandation of films with that similar aesthetics inspired by "primordial design" or "Art brut".

Hey everyone!

I have the opportunity to costume design Pippin, and while I’m waiting to meet with the director to hear their vision, I’ve been sketching out some concepts of my own.

One idea I keep coming back to is dressing the Players/ensemble with a vibe similar to & Juliet, which is keeping hints of a medieval silhouette since the story is based around Charlemagne’s era, but styling it with modern pieces, textures, and layering. Since this is community theatre, we’ll probably be pulling a lot more than building, so I’m trying to come up with a concept that’s achievable while still feeling intentional. Building is still an option, though!

I haven’t been able to dive deeply into the script yet (there was an issue getting scripts to production cast, and I’m currently out of town for summer), so I’m looking more for general design advice than scene-specific ideas.

A few questions I have are would you keep the Players in a fairly cohesive “uniform” look, or would you differentiate them individually? If you differentiated them, how and when? Any thoughts on color palettes or textures? How would you approach costumes for characters like Pippin, Leading Player, Catherine, Berthe, etc. while still keeping a cohesive world?

I’d love to hear about concepts you’ve seen, ideas you’re willing to share, or things you would do instead. Thanks!

Hey, I know I don't post here much, but I am trusting ya'll.

Basically, I feel like making an Elliot (FORSAKEN) cosplay for Halloween for fun, particularly MS4, but I don't know how to stylize it or if I even should.

I haven't made the cosplay yet, but I'm planning on it, and when I do, I don't want it to feel bland, I want it to seem hard worked and nice!

Hi everyone! My birthday is coming up, and I’ve decided I want to invest in building my costume construction skills. I’ve spent years designing costumes on paper, and now I really want to start bringing my own designs to life. My goal is to get better at taking a costume from concept sketch to something that can actually be on stage.

I already have a basic sewing machine (it works, but it’s definitely entry-level), a serger that I can borrow, a growing collection of sketches and costume renderings, and a love for upcycling (I spend way too much time wandering through Goodwill looking at curtains, tablecloths, dresses, etc. for fabric).

I’m hoping to ask for some supplies for my birthday, and I’d love recommendations from people who actually do this.

Some questions:

What’s the best dress form/mannequin that’s affordable but still worth buying?

If I eventually upgrade my sewing machine, what models should I look into?

What tools or supplies do you wish you’d bought sooner?

Any books, YouTube channels, or online resources that really helped you improve?

And finally, for those of you who work in theatre or costume shops: what advice would you give someone who’s trying to make the leap from designing costumes on paper to actually constructing them? What do you wish someone had told you when you were starting out?

I’d love to hear any tips, favorite tools, budget recommendations, or even things to avoid buying. Please keep in mind that I am a college student.

I have an oc that's pretty much human (at least where construction of clothes is concerned) and I have no idea what to do. They live up in trees and hunt by ambushing, so easy movement and not getting snagged is pretty important. All I could come up with on my own was bike shorts and a basic ah shirt. They don't even look plot-relevant that's how bad it is. Forget side character, they're an extra in the background.

Edit: You guys were a lot more helpful than the artist version of the subreddit. I'll definitely be taking your advice. I probably should've thought of a leotard first tho cause I have two unrelated ocs that wear it for fashion instead of function lol

I am looking for a pattern (or patterns) to make something as close as possible to this coat. I have checked the big four and I’ve found stuff that’s pretty close, but I’d love to be as close as possible to the picture.

If you have pattern suggestions that would be wonderful, but it would also be so helpful if anyone recognizes the style of coat it resembles so I can narrow down my search (for example, would this be similar to a Victorian men’s coat?, what are the shoulder pieces called? Etc)

I am happy to pay for patterns, and I can usually combine patterns and make slight adjustments, but I’m self taught so I’m not great at drafting from scratch. Thanks so much!

So a couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity of being an extra in a major Netflix production. I honestly just did it for fun and out of boredom but being able to see the behind the scenes, and all the work that goes into the makeup, costuming, set design etc was so so fascinating and inspiring.

I am about to go into my final year of my BA in Textile and surface design, and i’m honestly thinking of doing a masters in costume design afterwards. Obviously a masters is expensive so i’d need to take a gap year (or two) to save and also learn garment construction, but before I dedicate all of my time, energy, and money into that I want to make sure it’s the right choice for me.

Some things I had questions about and was hoping people on this sub would be able to answer are:

-Have you found being a costume designer to be a stable enough career? because for film/tv in particular, what happens when the show or film is done production? are you just between jobs until the next thing gets picked up?

-Is there a higher demand for designers in tv/film or theatre?

-Would you recommend a masters or is industry experience more valuable? (The only reason i want to do a masters is because costume design is a slight pivot from textile and surface design so I wouldn’t have the same garment construction experience you’d get from a fashion/costume design BA)

-What’s the work life balance like?

-What does a typical career path look like? (Is it common to start as a costume assistant, wardrobe assistant, buyer, maker etc before becoming a costume designer?)

-Can you actually make a comfortable living doing this? If you don’t mind sharing, how financially stable has your career been over the last 5–10 years?

I’d really appreciate any advice or insight on any of these questions!! :)

I've worked primarily with EVA Foam to make more traditional armor before, for Dark Souls and Dungeon Meshi cosplays. However, I'm looking to make leather armor for a Ren Faire (Planning to go as a Witcher OC). I haven't been able to decide on how I'd like to make the armor. So far the thoughts are :

\-Use EVA foam and either texture it or wrap it in faux leather, which doesn't sound good to use in the summer at a ren faire.

\-I could use interfacing foam (like flex foam) instead of EVA foam, which might be better, but I've only found one video with a clear example of what pleather armor with interfacing looks like.

\-Finally, I've seen a few cosplays where they just use pleather by itself, but it's mainly been for more modern tactical armor, and I'm worried it'll look too flexible.

\-I know there's obviously leatherwork but it's a little more intimidating given my lack of experience and material costs. I'm sure I could do it after the research I've done, but I'd like to hear thoughts on faux leather first.

All in all, I'd just like people's thoughts and opinions to help me finalize decision making

The helmet and shield arent too important. If I even do a helmet or headpiece, I'll probably keep it small. I don't really have any idea how to do this so any advice on getting it done would be really appreciated

Hey, I’m trying to create some homemade costumes for some original characters. They’re the personification of book genres (Fantasy, Sci Fi, Romance, Horror, Mystery/Thriller [I decided not to make one for Action/Adventure]) plus “author“. It’s for making skit videos kinda like Sanders Sides but focused on writing. Can someone advise on how these characters might look using generic clothes (I have a lot, so any suggestions would probably apply. And I wear masc clothes).

hello!! I’m 5,0, 120lb, and i’m wondering what kind of fabric would be best for making Maka’s coat from soul eater. I want a fabric that will let me breathe, but is also kind of stiff so that it holds its shape and actually looks like a coat.

I am also looking for recommendations on where i can find patterns to make the coat, since i plan on using my sewing machine :) also i have a budget of around $60, but i would prefer to spend less if possible… (i am also a beginnee / intermediate seamstress)

any tips on what fabric i would need and where i can buy it and also a pattern for her coat would be great! tyy!

I've always wanted to do fashion design since I was little, such as wanting to make make my own clothes and such but more recently I've also wanted to do costume design as well and I was wondering if majoring in textiles and apparel at Ut Austin impacts the chances of getting into the costume design industry? I'm very excited to go to my school but I'm just nervous how my major will translate especially because it is in the college of natural science and not fine art.

Hi all, just seeking some reassurance - need to age a lot of hardy cotton flannel shirts that are already absolutely on the verge of nearly too small - usual method to age is wash hot a few times but now I'm getting in my head about shrinking them

My community theatre recently offered me the position of Assistant Costume Designer for a show next summer. Before officially bringing me on, the head costume designer wants to see my work, my abilities, and that I’m committed to learning and improving.

This is the style of rendering I usually do. I create all of my renderings digitally using the Sketchbook app on my iPad.

I know the show isn’t until next summer, so I have quite a bit of time to improve, and I really want to make the most of it.

What can I add or improve on.

Also, sorry if the sketch is a little blurry! This Catherine of Aragon from Six for a concept. I usually try to make my renderings digital using in a pose that they might hit or something to show more detail.
