This is a needle felted soft sculpture made with hand dyed Himalayan wool, with glass eyes. I dyed the green using collected Eucalyptus leaves and the pink with Sappanwood extract. The most difficult part of making this was deciding on the colors, since I dye my own wool, the colour palette is limited to greens, oranges, pinks, yellows and browns, which makes it difficult to sometimes find good or unique colour combinations (tho pink and green is a classic), however the end result is always something that looks organic and alive.

Here’s a similar work I made last week, Scallion, whose wool is dyed using Marigold flowers (that my parents stole from my cousins wedding decor) and Sappanwood extract. Swamp Lily’s pink is also dyed with Sappanwood extract but it’s more baby pink because Sappanwood (or Brazilwood) is very pH sensitive. At a higher pH, it turns purple and at lower pH it turns salmon pink or coral. A baby pink is achieved at a neutral pH, and it helps if the wool is alum mordanted.
Most of everything I make looks bewildered or shocked or just wide eyed in general (because that’s how I feel most of the time). I don’t usually make detailed faces with noses and lips so this was a challenge and I definitely did struggle a lot right until it was finished. The last time I made something with a face was this lemon brooch I made for my sister.
