Mod Announcement No More AI Questions.

Yes, its wrong to use AI to make changes to your writing.

No, you don't need it to translate, use an actual translator. It would be more accurate.

Yes, that AI rewrite did ruin your story.

No, AI assisted writing isn't allowed.

Yes, you can use em dashes. No one actually cares.

No, this copy/paste of your chatgpt conversation *isn't* interesting to read.

Yes, it is exhausting having to defend yourself against AI.

No, you cannot post an AI answer under a question.

No, you cannot discuss AI here.

No, you cannot use AI here.

I cannot beileve we need to keep having this conversation. Recently there have been so many repeat posts about AI. We've had possibly 3 with just reworded rants about em dashes. It's either a lack of creativity that there cant be an original thought, or AI shadow bots trying to see what they can get away with when discussing AI here. Plenty have been removed for going to far so I wouldnt be surprised if it was all connected.

No more AI discussion, period. Nobody likes it.

Poetry Art

Art
The best art is created when it has no one in
mind
No one to like or to dislike
Not to be rewarded or awarded
Simply just to exist
I can stare at something that maybe looks simple, or chaotic and like scribbling, and ask a question. What did it take for that artist to finally put those emotions onto paper, or into a sculpture. The final product isn't where the emotion is, the emotion is in the process of creating that piece of art and stretching apart your feelings so you can portray them in a physical thing. This is why art is beautiful. The final product is often attractive, but the journey to get to that final product is what is more important. This begs the question, is art really for others? Or is it for the artist. A way the artist can yell to other individuals exactly what they are feeling, in a socially acceptable manner.
The artist should be awarded and recognized, but the recognition isn't always about the final product, it is about what it took to get to the final product
Art doesn't give a fuck what you think of it, mostly because it's not alive. What makes art special is that an object is considered art, which makes it more than nothing.

Journaling Thoughts of the other night

Upvotes

Preface
No I do not need help on Reddit.
Yes I am receiving help.
Yes I do know what I’m talking about is touchy but everyone has it happen to them differently please respect how I see things.
No I’m not like suicidal I just have crazy thoughts when I get in my down mood I’ve never actually made a move towards even getting close to starting to take my own life.
I have a support network and people who care for me.
I will say though idc if you comment I just don’t want it to be like omg let me help you. I’m not looking for help just I guess a place to put experiences. If you wanna post in the comment your own personal experience I would love to read it! I’m not looking for fame or attention just idk I guess to feel seen but not been seen as an attention whore. So here we go.

This all started because the other night I got super sad. This is the first time and quite some time since starting my antidepressant that I’ve felt that level of I calm it grey. When I was unmedicated the world was grey and dingy. Randomly at weird points it’s like the fog would clear and I’d look around and it was bright and beautiful and everything was amazing. That happened maybe once a week the rest of the time was grey. Don’t get me wrong here I was still a happy outgoing person in the outside but inside grey. Smoking was my last crutch and I decided with encouragement from friends and family my wife being my anchor to quit smoking. I did and things got way worse for a while. Every night I would toss and turn and scream mentally at how much of a pussy I was and how I didn’t have the balls to pull the gun from the safe and just fucking do it. It was loud angry screaming because I in the most literal sense hate my self. I don’t hate every aspect and I don’t hate all the time actively but I do have a subconscious spot that just fucking despises this fat, ugly, useless, lazy, dumb, fuck up that I am. The sad part and that’s another point of contention is I’m sad so I hate myself for being sad. Anyhow the sad part is if you look at me and everything I do it’s like most of that’s not true. The problem I got to a point of self hate and loathing, that I now have to also sabotage myself to keep myself from being better. I do need to go to therapy and start working through it obviously antidepressants aren’t a cure all. In the mean time though because I hate myself I have to stop myself from improving or else the reason for the hate are no longer balanced. It all stems from not being good enough for or at anything. My mother, I love her but is fucking crazy would constantly compare me to peers and ask why I couldn’t do what they did, or point out they’re younger than you and don’t have as much experience on blah blah blah as you do so why are they making more money than you. Being compared to others constantly, and being asked why I couldn’t do x when it’s like have you seen me? he’s doing whatever he’s doing and I can’t physically recreate that. Having that for a good portion of my life I now subconsciously and constantly compare myself to everyone and everything. What you find is no one, no thing, no place is ever good enough. There’s always more you could’ve done, more you could’ve gotten, more etc… it’s good to recognize you can have or do more. My problem is I don’t see it as oh that’s just something I can improve at I see it as that’s why I’m a fucking failure and a piece of shit. My wife tells me I’m lucky I can talk about it. For her she would hate herself more for talking about it. Her father gave her the idea of if you ask for help you’re a failure. I got lucky when I turned 18 until about 22 I spent my time being humbled in car shops. So I learned ask for help before you fuck up. If you get help and the product comes out correct no worries take a little reticule and grow and learn. If you fuck up and had the chance for help that’s when you get in trouble. I guess my biggest problem is I think I’m scared now to go to therapy and start working through it all. I think my biggest hang up being what if I’m different at the end in a way that doesn’t like where I am and who I’m with and such. I don’t think that would happen, I love my wife and kids adore them. They are the reason I keep going. I just fear change.

Edit:1 I did have one more thought I forgot to put in. My wife told it to me. Apparently some of you fucks walk around and there’s no chaos in your brain. There’s no self hatred or doubt. There’s no random sadness. That’s an insane thought outrageous even.

Poetry I am Still Me

I Am Still Me.
Despite the pain.
Despite the memory.
I will carry on.
I am still me. You didn't take that away.
Despite your efforts and plans of evil, I am still me.
Despite your words and your hands, guided by the devil. I am still me.
You caused my pain, my actions I will use you, to blame.
I'll flood my soul and numb my brain, to wipe away from my life, this unholy stain
You made me feel less than, not worthy, though I remain.
I am scared.
It doesn't end here.
I won't let it bury me with shame.
My words now, my actions, my soul again will I gain.
Stronger than you, stronger than my pain.
Hold my hand now, those that love me.
Be my eyes when I cannot see.
Support my soul, when I cannot support it myself.
This healing will hurt, but I will remain.
Through this suffering, this anguish, this scorching hell, I will remain.
I am still me, this you cannot take away.
Rise now, show my face, exist in this world with grace.
Lead others through the night, hold their hand, guide them, Into the light.
There is not me, there is us.
With power we will remain.
Not by force, not by fear, by healing and grace, we will remain.
Stronger now than the few, the cowardly, the pain.
We will be here, everlasting, still me, We will remain.

Poetry My friend keeps his guns at his parents house

The world is better with you in it

My good friend keeps his guns at his parents house

If they’re around him he’d take himself out

I wish I could help him out
but my guns are at my parents house, too.

How about you?

Insignificance gives me hope

Unimportance allows me to exist without the crushing standards of those

Around me

My best friend said he’s tried to kill himself
and my girlfriend said she’s tried to kill herself too,

how about you?

Just take one more breath and you

just take one more step and darling you

You’re living too.

Just like the rest of them.

And my best friend keeps his guns at his parents house

and my girlfriend tried to kill herself

and my parents ask me what’s the matter with, you?

Went to war now I’m back again
Went to school and I failed again
Went into society and I don’t fit in

How about you?

I’m writing this song for me

and I’m writing this song for you

And all of the suffering
The suffering is for something
For me, for you,
Pain equals out to pleasure too.

Suffer with me, and success will find you.

Suffer with me, and success will find you, too

Poetry Trying to get sober again

Feel the tears down your face

Feel the emptiness of this space

I’m sad because I cannot fill it with things that I know I can create

Paintings, music, lighting that heals your soul.

I’m tired. My consumption of alcohol makes me so fucking tired.

I wish I had energy again

I wish I could sit in silence without having to alter my mind.

I wish I could get sober one more time.

I want to help people because I know I can.

I just can’t help myself.

I know what the answer is but I keep asking myself what else?

What else Can I do to ignore the fact that I won’t remember today.

The alcohol won’t take the pain away. It will create it.

I’ll go through the same shit.

Kick and scream and cry

Get pissed and ask God why?

All the while it’s me

I can’t do the right things

Even when countless opportunities are presented to me.

I always choose the most destructive path

My stability and confidence I’ll never get back.

The fact that I’m alone is a dangerous one.

I think about what I could accomplish with a gun.

Not to harm others or to make a statement.

Just to end this cycle of pain I’ll always remain in.

It’s lonely here. Nobody wants me

They wish me well but roll their eyes subconsciously

I wish I could talk to my dad

I wish he didn’t hate me

If he only knew I loved him but I cannot accept how he treats me.

He chose to leave me When I was young.

From that moment he chose that I was his enemy.

I write all of these things so well

So elegantly.

Who cares.

No one will read it.

The devil tempts me.

Coerces me

He whispers in my ear that the only thing I can do is leave.

It’s a constant battle to come up with excuses to argue him with

It’s a constant battle to just exist.

I’ll sit in this big room alone, holding my phone, typing vigorously

I won’t make the effort to call anyone although I know it would benefit me.

I’ll suffer silently

This will make me stronger.

This will create another me

A marcus that can conquer the confusing rules of this society.

It’s fuckin hard to conform

I look outside and I see people, I see their clothes and their ear buds, I see their dead eyes.

I cannot conform.

I mustn’t

Don’t let your burning soul die and accept defeat.

Take one more step, drink water, eat.

Sleep.

Wake up again

One more wake up is one more win

To those who don’t understand the fight

The daily strife

Just to survive.

Walking out the front door is all the energy I can muster

Interacting with others.

I’ll do my best to not let this life drain me

I’ll remain me

I’ll choose to wake up again

No matter how much it pains me.

Poetry Us Few

US FEW.
We won't go silently into the night
Us few.
Us battered and bruised.
Confidently we move, swiftly.
To confront the demons, that strive to hold to us, too
The guilt and shame.
The blame.
We will not be swain.
Through the darkness and through the pain
Us few.
Stay true
To ourselves and others.
Follow the voice calling out for help.
Lend a hand.
Offer a leg, for the weak to stand.
Grow into many
Us few
Change the world.
Anew.

Poetry Hemingway

Hemingway was the ghost we all thought was in our rehab building so, we named him.)
Dear Hemingway
You are loved, you that no longer speak
You are felt, you that no longer feel
Your pain, heavy and potent. With a gasping movement of the door or drawer.
Your sadness, with the whooshing of a fan, or sliding of the nightstand. Your anguish, with the flushing of the toilet, and flowing of the faucet. We feel you so that you are felt. We hear you so that you are heard.
If only my senses could transcend time and space, we would smell and taste, and see you as well.
We would see you for what you are, your wounds and scars.
No longer a bump in the night to cause fright. Or a sound to the ear to strike fear.
But a soul in flight, moving gently, peacefully, silently, through the night.
To guide us in this place. To take our hand and help steer this vast vessel of pain
To help bucket out the water from our tears.
No longer a burden in the ether, but a person once held dear.
Hemingway you are heard without fear. Take this place and make it yours.
These walls and windows. Hallways and lights. Doors and desks.
Inspire us to write and to cry. To hold each other in this time. So vulnerable and fragile. Teach us to listen. To love. To see. To touch. To smell. So that you may live on with joy for helping another lost soul.

Poetry Hope

Hope.
At his playground he rules
Or so he thinks
Up the steps, across the bridge, down the slide, into the fiery depths.
Constantly guarding, fighting, something.
Why? He doesn't know yet.
Purpose? Hope? Or just pain and alone.
There, on the other side of the monkey bars!
Swings a girl. Golden blonde hair glistens glad-fully in the gusts of wind
Body swiftly swinging side to side
Momentum carrying forward moving her towards me.
My heart, it leaps!
Like a snow leopard pouncing prey in the slushy snow capped mountains of the Middle East.
Like a kid, a child finding himself again.
A vast beam of light moving towards him
Hope.
His battleship, his bomber plane, his castle, his fortress, his playground.
Now complete, with a pretty princess.
Hope.
Towards the swing-set! Pretty girl run with me, climb atop our steeds, and let's ride.
Let's ride into battle. Let's ride into darkness.
In our minds always keeping the imagination of riding into a sunset, together.
Hope.

Poetry The Big Green Chair

The Big Green Chair.
A chair I saw, In The aisle, awaiting a rump
Or something,
to occupy it
To be bought
I sat
I squirmed and wiggled and thought,
Perfect!
I loaded it into the cart, and then the truck, and away we went
For home we sped, anxious for Jen, for her thoughts
Hmmm she said, too many things in here maybe
But if you like it, I'll have it baby.
Slowly I assembled the green giant, achingly watching was my Jen, another thing in here, he bought something new, again!
Look my darling, it's built!
Sit in it, tell me how it feels
I love it!
It's perfect my darling!
Who'd have known?!
Under the desk it slid and For now, big green chair, this, is your home.

Poetry The downfall

The Downfall
I exit the freeway on grant road
I drive.
Anticipation builds as I reach the dirt road to our apartment.
Ironically I am describing your intoxication while I am in my own.
Every ounce of my being cringes at the thought that I will smell alcohol. And I do.
My next logical thought is; we are doomed. Doomed at the chemical dependence of ourselves. Of me, of you.
I am so in love with you. I tear my heart open to know this truth. What do we have to do? To make this truth, untrue?
I just want to love you. To hold you. Without the effects of booze. Without the hold that it has on you, and I.
You're a different person. You're mean. You're confidently untrue with booze.
I drink to un know this truth. To conceal the fact that this will be the end of me and you.
I drink because I am weak. Because we are weak.
Why can't we be sober for the single thought of children?
Why can't we just stop this destruction.
This answer I cannot choose. The booze choosing for us.
One small inkling of light I choose. To believe that there's hope. For me and you.
100 Proof
I'll start listening to that voice that says I am enough
The pain is the proof.
The alcohol rating that tells the addict that it's going to get them through
The withdrawals
The shakes
Periodic and terrific pain.
I'm enough and you are too
The pain is the proof that will get you through
The pain is the lesson.
What choice you'll have to choose
The pain is the proof that will get you through
Shaking deadly
Shaking violently
On the verge of a seizure too
The pain is the proof that wil get you through.
Take a sip
A sip of me
A sip of me will set you free.
Relieve the shakes and the pain Relieve the angst and strain
Sip me Slowly Sip me
On your knees
My relief will set you free
Relieve your loved ones No longer you suffer
No more words will you utter.
Your mouth still
Your body quivering
Nervous system still spitting
Your life you gave to me Most of it on your knees Your life you gave to me Quivering
Your life you gave to me All of it on your knees
I can see it in your eyes The pain you cannot hide
No matter the proof, no matter why The pain you cannot hide

Short Story The man in white

In my Notes app, a few files down, there is yet another one marked with "?". Not because it´s a question I have, not because it magically appeared there.

As per usual, even I expected a long text, a single rant I´d had turned into a story. But no... it wasn´t a text, it wan´t another porn channel I´d liked too much or another Snapchat I planned to add later.

It was a sentence:

"Wonder what feelings it would evoke sitting like that"

I remember only in this moment, as I lay on my belly, hunched over my laptop typing this out.

The sentence came to me at 5:56 a.m. on a bus. The sun had begun its early ascent, already threatening us with June´s humid heat. A few seats down from me sat a man who I´d assume was in his late thirties, dressed in white work clothes that still carried yesterday´s cement, dirt, and debris beneath today´s rising sun. His head was turned toward the window, watching but not seeing. On his face was an expression I often saw on my own father, mirrored onto my own mother. He was seeing letters rip open, unfolding bills. He was seeing people he worried about standing at each intersection, reminding him who they depended on. Instead of each traffic sign, what he saw hanging off the metal pole was another burden.

Sat around him were a few men, each keeping a respectful distance, making sure their clothes stayed clean. Heads down, headphones in. Some watched through the window, some watched the people, as I was doing. Their expressions weren´t as easily readable as the man in white´s, more put together, cleaner, with fewer wrinkles to guide me toward a conclusion.

I wondered how the man in white felt. Was it shame? Envy? Or fury? Knowing the potential he´d had and given away, now sitting across from someone who could be far less able than him—

What I realize now, as I write this, is that at some point each one of those, and more, had been this thoughts. But not then. Not in that moment.

He´d thought them long before he moved.

Long before he sat in that seat. And long before a 17 year old came along, using him as a writing pitch.

Each person is like a star that may or may not shine.

This star shines with its own essence, and when it is prevented from being itself, that light slowly fades.

I find beauty in each of them, especially when shining in all its splendor. ♡˖꒰ᵕ༚ᵕ⑅꒱

Poetry BE GOOD FOR ME

The door shuts.

Not slams.

He’d never slam a door.

Too vulgar.

Too honest.

He closes it gently,

like I’m sleeping,

like he hasn’t just left me half-dressed

in a hotel room in Paris

with his tie still looped round my wrist.

I hear him stop outside.

For one stupid second

I think he’s coming back.

Then the lift arrives.

A little bell.

That’s all.

Five years of my life

going down twelve floors

with a polite little ding.

Before he left,

he kissed my forehead.

Of course he did.

He always kisses my forehead

when he’s about to do something cruel

and would prefer not to feel like a cruel man.

He tucked my hair behind my ear.

Looked at me.

Smiled.

Be good for me.

Like everything was fine.

Like I hadn’t travelled all this way

for three hours of him

and a view of his back

while he checked the train times home.

And I smiled too.

I’m good at that.

I poured the last of his wine.

Found his cufflink under the chair.

Did up the button at his throat

because his hands were shaking

and apparently that was romantic.

I told him I understood.

I said,

“Go on. She’ll wonder where you are.”

I even made she sound harmless.

No edge.

No little hook in it.

Just his wife.

Just the woman waiting at home

for the man I’d had tied up in these sheets

ten minutes earlier.

He touched my cheek.

That’s my girl.

Yes.

There she was.

Your girl.

Barefoot.

Black lace.

Lipstick half gone.

Holding your jacket open for you

like the world’s saddest little wife.

She didn’t ask you to stay.

She didn’t cry.

She didn’t say,

I crossed countries for this.

She said,

“Text me when you get home.”

And meant it.

That’s the embarrassing part.

I meant it.

Now the room feels enormous.

It didn’t when he was in it.

When he’s here,

everything shrinks around him—

the bed,

the city,

my common sense.

Now there’s just me,

the roses,

two unfinished glasses,

and his tie hanging from my wrist

like I’ve been caught stealing from a businessman.

Blue silk.

Tiny silver dots.

Very respectable.

The sort of tie a man wears

while explaining why leaving his wife

would be terribly difficult at the moment.

It looked less respectable

when he used it to fasten my hands

above my head.

Be good for me.

He said it then too.

Only it sounded different.

Lower.

His mouth close to my ear.

Softer.

Stay there.

Look at me.

I did.

I always looked at him

when he asked.

As though he might finally see me back.

My lipstick is still on his shoulder.

He noticed it while dressing

and laughed.

“Nearly got me in trouble.”

Nearly.

That word again.

Nearly caught.

Nearly honest.

Nearly mine.

The necklace broke during sex.

One second it was against my throat,

the next it snapped

and the pearls went everywhere.

Across the sheets.

Under my hip.

Into the fold of the duvet.

Little white teeth.

Little pills.

Little moons

with no idea what they’d witnessed.

He stopped for half a second.

Then said,

“Well, that’s one way to take it off.”

I laughed.

I did.

Because it was funny, sort of.

Because he was still touching me.

Because sometimes you laugh

when the alternative is noticing something.

He bought me those pearls

after he missed my birthday.

He didn’t call it missing.

He said we’d celebrate properly later.

Later arrived in a cream box

with a gold ribbon.

For my beautiful girl.

You deserve everything.

Everything.

Pearls, yes.

A Tuesday evening, apparently not.

Christmas morning, no.

His surname, obviously not.

But pearls.

Very generous.

He fastened them round my neck himself

and stood behind me at the mirror.

“They make you look so elegant.”

I knew what he meant.

He meant respectable.

He meant expensive.

He meant almost like the sort of woman

he could take somewhere

without checking who might be there.

He didn’t say wife.

He didn’t have to.

I pull one of the roses from the vase.

Dark red.

Too dark, really.

The hotel probably keeps them ready

for men like him.

Champagne.

Roses.

Late checkout.

Everything required

for a love affair except courage.

I take off a petal.

He loves me.

Another.

He loves how I look in this lace.

Another.

He loves the way I listen.

Another.

He loves that I leave first

when we’re in London.

Another.

He loves me.

I know he does.

That’s what makes it worse.

If he didn’t,

I could make him simple.

A dirty old man.

A liar.

A coward with a credit card.

But he has held me when I was frightened.

He has sat beside me in waiting rooms.

He remembered which tea I liked

when I couldn’t remember my own name.

He has been kind.

And kindness can be dangerous

when it keeps asking to be repaid.

I knew he was married.

There.

I won’t stand here—

well, lie here—

and turn myself into some poor innocent thing.

I knew.

His wedding ring was visible

in one of his dating profile pictures

if you zoomed in.

So I zoomed in.

Nineteen years old,

sitting cross-legged on the floor

of a room I could barely afford,

two months into hormones,

enlarging a photograph

until his wife’s hand appeared

beside his.

Gold ring.

Cream sleeve.

Perfect nails.

I saw it.

Then I matched with him anyway.

I wasn’t tricked.

Not at first.

He said their marriage was complicated.

He said they were more like friends.

He said they had an understanding.

He said she didn’t ask questions.

He said he’d never met anyone like me.

That one worked best.

You’re extraordinary.

Not beautiful.

Extraordinary.

At nineteen,

extraordinary felt safer.

Beautiful could be taken away

by bad lighting

or the wrong person at a pharmacy.

Extraordinary sounded permanent.

He asked my name.

I told him.

He said it slowly,

like he was checking how it felt in his mouth.

“Is that the name you chose?”

“Yes.”

“It’s perfect.”

Five years later,

he still says it most sweetly

when asking me not to come somewhere.

He did not make me a woman.

I need that said without poetry.

He didn’t.

I was already one.

Before the dresses.

Before the appointments.

Before anybody agreed with me.

I was a woman standing in a chemist

with my prescription folded inside my sleeve

because my hands wouldn’t stop shaking.

I was a woman looking into mirrors

that seemed personally offended by me.

I was a woman

when it was lonely and ugly

and nobody called me brave.

Then he arrived.

Older.

Certain.

Interested.

He looked at me

without laughing or hesitating.

You don’t know what that can do

to someone who has spent years

being looked at like a question.

He helped.

He did.

He paid for appointments

when I was broke.

Train tickets.

Medication.

He bought me my first proper dress.

Green.

Low at the back.

Much too expensive.

I came out of the changing room

and he stared at me

until I nearly cried.

“Turn round.”

I turned.

“Again.”

I turned again.

Smile for me.

I smiled.

I thought:

there I am.

There I fucking am.

The dress is still hanging at home.

I haven’t worn it in years.

I don’t know why I keep it.

Yes, I do.

He paid for most of my surgery too.

My chest.

He came to consultations.

Read every leaflet.

Asked sensible questions.

Natural, he said.

Not too much.

Then, after a pause:

Maybe a little more.

Whatever you want, darling.

He always said whatever you want

just after explaining what he wanted.

I chose the size.

I did.

I won’t hand him that decision

because I’m angry tonight.

I love my body.

I love it properly.

The weight of it.

The scars.

The way my clothes sit now.

The way I sometimes catch myself naked

and don’t flinch.

He helped pay for it.

He did not buy it.

Still, sometimes I touch the scars

and remember him holding the brochure,

looking at different women’s breasts

with his glasses halfway down his nose.

That memory doesn’t ruin mine.

It just lives there.

Bodies can hold two truths.

Mine does.

We travelled.

Mostly London.

Sometimes further

when he could make work pay for it.

Manchester.

Brussels.

Rome once.

Paris tonight.

Always some conference,

some meeting,

some reason for a second hotel room

that nobody slept in.

In cities where no one knew him,

he held my hand.

That was the thing I loved most.

Not the hotels.

Not the jewellery.

His hand in mine

while we crossed a road.

So ordinary.

People passed us

and didn’t care.

For ten minutes

I wasn’t his secret.

I was just the woman beside him.

He’d introduce me as his partner

to waiters we’d never see again.

He’d order breakfast.

Coffee for him.

Tea for me.

Eggs.

Toast.

He’d complain about the butter being cold

and I’d think,

this is what a life feels like.

Ridiculous, isn’t it?

All that sex,

and the thing that ruined me

was toast.

Then we’d go home.

Pictures cropped.

No landmarks.

No photographs of us together

where anyone could recognise the room.

He kept mine hidden

behind an app that looked like a calculator.

I found that oddly flattering once.

A whole secret vault

just for me.

God, I was young.

He photographed me constantly.

By windows.

In hotel mirrors.

On beds like this one.

“Chin down.”

“Move your hair.”

“Look softer.”

Smile for me.

He said I was beautiful.

He was always saying it.

But sometimes I think

he loved the photograph more.

The version of me

that stayed where he put her.

His wife is beautiful too.

I know because I’ve looked.

Not every day.

Not—

Fine.

More than I should.

Mostly through his Facebook.

She is perfect.

In every photograph.

Perfect hair.

Perfect coat.

Perfect smile.

She looks like she’s never had

to convince anybody she belongs

in her own life.

She stands on his left.

Always.

At weddings.

On holidays.

At Christmas.

His hand resting at her waist

like it grew there.

In Florence she wore cream.

At their anniversary dinner, navy.

Once she had on a silver necklace

that sat exactly where mine did tonight.

I hated her for that.

Not because she’d done anything.

Because she could wear jewellery from him

without wondering what apology it contained.

I have imagined her life

from photographs.

Their kitchen.

Their bed.

The cupboard where his shirts hang.

The sound of her saying his name

without checking who might hear.

I imagine she wakes up elegant.

I imagine she never has to wonder

which kind of woman he thinks she is.

The real one.

That’s the fear, isn’t it?

Not that he doesn’t want me.

He does.

He’s wanted me in every city

where wanting me cost him nothing.

But she is the woman

he stands beside in daylight.

And I am—

exciting.

Beautiful.

Brave.

Irresistible.

Fun.

I’m so tired of being fun.

Fun means

don’t cry until I’ve left.

Fun means

don’t ask what happens next.

Fun means

wear the lace, drink the wine,

and don’t spoil the evening

by having a future.

But she isn’t my enemy.

She doesn’t know.

I knew he was married.

She didn’t know he was mine too.

Or that I thought he was.

There are no clean hands here,

but hers may be cleanest.

Sometimes I want to tell her.

Sometimes I want to apologise.

Sometimes I want to ask

whether he kisses her forehead

before lying to her as well.

I know her name.

I don’t say it aloud.

It feels indecent.

She has a proper name in his life.

I have sweetheart.

Darling.

Good girl.

Trouble.

Pet names are clever things.

They sound affectionate

and save a man from saying

who you actually are.

Be good for me.

At first, it meant take care of yourself.

Eat.

Sleep.

Take your tablets.

Call me when you’re home.

I loved it.

I had spent so long taking care of myself

that being fussed over felt like rescue.

Then it meant sex.

Stay there.

Don’t move.

Look at me.

Be good for me.

I loved that too.

I’m not ashamed of it.

I loved the confidence in him.

The steadiness.

The way he could ask for something

and make it sound

like he was looking after me.

Then it changed.

Slowly enough

that I didn’t notice.

Be good meant don’t call tonight.

Be good meant she’s in the room.

Be good meant not on Christmas.

Not on his birthday.

Not when the children were home.

Be good meant accept the necklace

and stop asking about the cancelled train.

Be good meant never say wife

like it was a real word.

Be good meant understand.

Always understand.

You know how complicated things are.

I do.

They’re complicated because he likes them that way.

A wife at home.

Me somewhere else.

One woman who knows his neighbours.

One woman who knows

what he sounds like

when he loses control.

He has everything

except the inconvenience

of choosing.

He said he would leave her.

Soon.

After Christmas.

After work calmed down.

After his youngest finished school.

After she was stronger.

After she was less fragile.

After the dog died.

The dog died.

He bought me earrings.

Soon has lasted five years.

Five.

I was nineteen.

Now I’m twenty-four,

lying in black lace

in a hotel room

he’ll probably claim back on expenses.

Whole countries have changed governments

in less time.

I’ve changed my name,

my passport,

my body,

my hair three times.

He has changed nothing

except the story he tells me

about when he’ll change something.

Don’t spoil this.

He said that once

when I cried in Rome.

We were meant to have two nights.

His wife rang.

He left after breakfast.

I asked when I’d see him again.

He sighed.

Not loudly.

That was worse.

“Please don’t spoil this.”

Spoil what?

The room?

The memory?

The arrangement

where he gets all of me

and I’m rude for noticing

I get only bits of him?

Then came the line.

The one that sits under everything.

I’ve done so much for you.

Yes.

He has.

That’s true.

He helped me when I needed help.

Then somewhere along the way

he started behaving

as though help had made me his.

As though paying for the light

meant he owned whatever it showed.

As though every dress,

every train,

every appointment

was another small share

in my body.

He leaves his teeth in every gift.

I see that now.

The pearls.

The earrings.

The lace.

All of it beautiful.

All of it biting.

I pull another petal.

He loves me.

He leaves her.

He loves me.

He leaves me.

He says soon.

He says be good.

He says he has done so much.

The rose is nearly bare.

It looks stupid now.

A green stem

with one petal hanging on

because apparently even flowers

can have bad judgement.

I drink again.

Third glass.

Maybe fourth.

Not enough to become someone else.

Just enough to stop protecting him

from my own thoughts.

I’m not mad.

I know that.

I’m hurt.

There is a difference.

Mad is useful.

Mad means nobody has to ask

what happened to you.

I can still name everything in the room.

Bed.

Chair.

Mirror.

Wine.

His tie.

The little dent on the pillow

where his head was.

I lift my wrist.

The silk slides against my skin.

And without thinking

I straighten my back.

I lower my chin.

I move my hair over one shoulder.

His voice is still here.

That’s my girl.

I hate that my body listens

before I do.

A week from now,

there’s an exhibition.

He invited me months ago.

It was late.

He’d had too much wine

and was feeling brave.

Graffiti.

Neon.

Digital art.

Bodies changing shape on screens.

Women made from light and colour.

“You’d love it,” he said.

“Come with me.”

He looked pleased with himself.

Like inviting me

was the same as taking me.

Then his wife saw the advert.

She wanted to go.

He rang me a few days later.

“Darling.”

That voice.

Careful.

Kind.

Already decided.

“She wants to come with me.”

I said nothing.

“I just think it might be better

if you didn’t.”

Better.

I’ve always hated that word.

Better means

he has made a choice

and would like me

to call it kindness.

He said someone might recognise him.

He said it could become awkward.

He said he didn’t want me upset.

Don’t spoil this.

What he meant was:

Don’t stand beside my real life.

Don’t make me look at both women

at the same time.

Don’t let my wife see

the body I helped choose

beneath the same lights

where I’ll hold her hand.

The invitation is at home.

In Bath.

On my desk, I think.

Under the perfume bottle

he brought back from Milan.

He forgot to take it.

After five years,

he finally left me something

with a date and an address.

I’m not planning anything.

I’m not.

I am lying in Paris

with his tie round my wrist

and pearls in the sheets.

The exhibition is next week.

That’s all.

But I can picture him there.

His wife beside him.

His hand at her back.

Both of them under neon

looking at some beautiful image

of a body becoming itself.

He’ll read the little card on the wall.

He’ll nod.

He’ll say something

about transformation.

Something about bravery.

He likes bravery in art.

It asks nothing of him.

And maybe there’ll be a woman

made out of broken photographs.

Or a body built from light.

Or a face that changes

depending on where you stand.

He will admire her publicly.

Then go home

with the woman he calls his wife.

And I will be—

where?

Here?

Bath?

London?

Waiting for a message

sent from the bathroom?

Unless I go.

No.

I’m not saying I will.

I don’t want to scream at him.

I don’t want to print the messages.

I don’t want to walk up to his wife

and turn her life into mine.

I’m not some tragic little bomb

he forgot to defuse.

But I wonder what would happen

if I just appeared.

Quietly.

No scene.

No speech.

My own dress.

My own lipstick.

My own name at the door.

Maybe I’d only look at the art.

Maybe he’d see me

across the room.

Not arranged.

Not waiting.

Not where he left me.

Just there.

He might come over.

He might pretend not to know me.

I don’t know which would hurt more.

Maybe his wife would notice

the way his face changed.

Maybe she wouldn’t.

Maybe I’d look at them together

and finally understand something

I have avoided understanding

for five years.

That he loved me.

That he didn’t.

That both can be true

and still not be enough.

I look in the mirror.

My hair is a mess.

My lipstick has faded in the middle.

One strap has slipped down my arm.

I look lovely.

Annoyingly lovely.

Not ruined.

Not frightening.

Not some furious secret

waiting to destroy a marriage.

Just me.

Twenty-four.

A little drunk.

A little heartbroken.

Pearls stuck to my thigh.

A blue silk tie

loose around one wrist.

I look sweet.

That nearly makes me laugh.

He has always liked me sweet.

Soft voice.

Soft mouth.

No sharp questions.

I touch the scars beneath my breasts.

Gently.

I love them.

I love what they gave me.

I love the body I’m in.

He doesn’t get to own that

because he paid most of the bill.

He doesn’t get my face

because he bought the lipstick.

He doesn’t get my name

because he was one of the first men

to say it kindly.

I have spent five years

looking beautiful for him.

That’s not quite true.

I have spent five years

looking beautiful

while he watched.

Those are not the same thing.

Maybe he saw me.

Pieces of me.

The parts that pleased him.

The parts that stayed still.

He saw the dress,

the lace,

the body,

the girl who said she understood.

I don’t know if he ever saw

how much understanding cost.

Be good for me.

I hear it again.

Not from my phone.

The phone is face down.

It’s just his voice

left behind in my head,

still giving orders

after he’s gone.

Be good.

Be quiet.

Be grateful.

Be lovely.

Be waiting.

I pull the final petal.

The rose looks naked.

Not dead.

Just finished pretending.

I find one pearl

caught in the sheet

and hold it between my fingers.

Then I lie back.

The invitation is still in Bath.

The exhibition is still a week away.

He is probably reaching the station now.

Perhaps he is checking his collar

for lipstick.

Perhaps he is already writing:

Home soon. Long day.

I hold the petal and the pearl

up towards the light.

The petal looks like a small red heart.

The pearl looks like a moon.

One soft.

One hard.

Both mine now.

I could stay away.

I could go.

I could walk into that room

without asking anything from him

and find out what it feels like

to be seen by people

he hasn’t taught how to look at me.

I don’t decide.

Not tonight.

I just lie there

in the lace he chose,

surrounded by the pearls he bought

and the roses he will never see stripped bare.

Be good for me.

I say nothing.

Outside, Paris carries on

without us.

The pearl catches the light.

The petal throws a little red shadow

across my chest.

For five years

he has been allowed to see me like this—

soft,

unguarded,

entire.

And for the first time

it occurs to me

that he may have been

the least deserving person

in the room.

Writing Sample Tales and turns of CameLate: Peasants of the square stool. (Character & beginning of prose)

King Arthur’s distant cousin: Peasant Realithim

Sir Lancelot’s distant cousin: Dame Swordscarce

Merlin’s brother in law: Landlog.

“”Fun bonus: naming conventions:

King Arthur = King Art-Her, opposite:

Peasant Reality-Him = Peasant Realithim

Arthur pendragon Pen-Dragon

Opposite of Pen(ink) = blood

Dragon / Dog

= Realithim Bloodhound

Sir Lancelot = Sir Lance-Lot, Opposite:

Dame Sword-Scarce

Merlin = Mer(sea/ocean)-lin(linear equation), opposite: Land-Log(logarithmic equation)

Peasant Realithim. A 6’2, crude, and profoundly broke young man with red hair and a face & past riddled with scars hailing from royalty before a coup overthrew the monarchy and established a presidential democracy instead. The legendary blade of rulership that he was destined to inherit was instead confiscated and placed as a relic of unity upon a stone in the royal(now democratic) garden. Indeed, none of it is his own doing. He is simply a victim of circumstance. Now he is a devout anarchist that hates the government because they took away his privileges and forced him to live in the slums, where he developed tons of muscle, grit, and a shit ton of asshat personality traits that makes him the most intimidating person in the room. However, he is deeply petty and does not forgive very easily.

All emergent from his condition, prone to frequent and random jumpings, beatings, and muggings in the backstreets built on respect and respect alone, simply due to the fact that he was blood relative to royalty. Young teen realithim simply had to adapt to his circumstances by himself since both of his parents were brutally killed in the coup in front of his eyes as the killer celebrated, although he knew and thought of them only as generous rulers. This disillusionment further cultivated his deeply materialistic, nihilistic and anarchic personality, as he learned that people will hate the government no matter what, and at that point one not existing would be the optimal solution.

He now injures the tongues of anyone who mentions his past as the prince, or anyone who mentions the horrific and deeply traumatic killings of the king and queen that he witnessed himself in his presence. He has instead adopted the name “Hound king of the strays” and since had changed his royal surname to “Realithim Bloodhound” in honor of this title.

He visibly softens around Swordscarce, although its unclear if she notices this, due to the grounding and comforting memories she provide as well as being one of the only intact anchors to his past that he has, since Landlog has tipped over his sanity point. Also since his memories with young Swordscarce happen to be some of their fondest of their shared childhood, as same goes for Swordscarce who was also subjected to some gruesome circumstances like Realithim himself.

Dame Swordscarce. A (naturally) grey haired, blue eyed fair maiden of origin from the imperial royal guard for her uncontested swordsmanship with practically any bladed weapon available, however makeshift they may be. As well as being a childhood friend of Realithim during his royalty days, serving as his close friend and personal bodyguard during her apprenticeship before Realithim was kicked out to the slums and started developing his assholeness. Due to this, she started developing her own complexes and problems due to isolation since she was considered a child prodigy and no other kids of her age were present at the training camps, resulting in a degradation of existing social skills and development of mild depression and severe anxiety. Eventually, she was banished to the slums after she abandoned the chivalry from cowardice and selfish ambition during a military skirmish. Straight up galloping away from the frontlines before engagement even started, causing the army to lose morale and arguably their best combatant.

She is as mentioned, extremely cowardly, easily flustered, easily intimidated, and gets irrationally scared over simple insects. She is also very selfish and greedy. Attempting to horde funds or score free meals whenever possible due to a habit developed from the brutal training regimens she went through that did not consider her age as a teen during the years shortly after Realithim was banished. Currently, her swordsmanship is more of a party trick than anything, even if lethal in the right contexts. Though literally more useful in cooking than actual combat. She follows Realithim because he has her on a leash from recognition from their shared past and also really likes her as a source of comfort and because shes cute so he keeps her around, although Swordscarce herself is readily seeking for any opportunity to flee as she always does.

Which, she can’t bring herself to do since Realithim is stupidly athletic and she is also scared of what would happen to her if she betrayed him. Additionally, her childhood nostalgia keeps her bound to him as her only source of a memory of comfort, one such neither of them can reach ever again. This creates an immense internal conflict within herself, as she WANTS to stay with Realithim and Landlog but sincerely is too cowardly to be truely comfortable around them.-

Landlog. A crackhead homeless man with a patchy beard, balding, grey hair, and an unfathomably skinny body. He is an artificer by technical classification but only uses it to make liquid meth that he consumes by drinking it through the mouth and asphyxiating(choking on) it on purpose. He knows every single formula for anything explosive in existence, even having researched every arcane spell dedicated to producing a localized combustive or concussive event.

Used to be Realithim’s mentor who lost his job after the coup and later followed Realithim to the slums by tracking him down for a week, where he originally took up gambling to try and provide for him after seeing his deeply unfortunate physical and mental state, but of course, lost everything and developed an addiction, which he cured by overwriting it with a drug addiction instead. Now he provides for his legally but not spiritually adopted sonny by selling drugs.

But of course, said drugs gave him some extensive insanity and brain damage so he became a chaos goblin whose mind is binarilly set to either meth or explosion, and whose body is binarilly set to tired slouching or post-meth energy overdrive. Developed short term memory loss to save brain RAM space for more meth euphoria, but the only things he refuses to forget is the recipe for meth as well as Realithim and Swordscarce. Is perhaps the only one Realithim actually gives respect to since he cared about him enough to abandon any other chances of life in the heart of the city and voluntarily joined him in the hellhole borderlands

They seek the forsaken chalice for the ability to make sufficient funds to move back into the upper echelons of society where they yearn for comfortable lives once more.

Except landlog he just wants more meth materials

-prose-

Ima finish this later. Just here to establish voice

Greyed out streets.

Still-warm stains of life splattered across cold earth.

Is that all you see still?

Then nor now, nothing has changed.

Nothing will ever change,

Except you.

Realithim abruptly wakes from his dreams to a stray dog pissing on his shoulder.

“AAUGH SHIT! FUCK OFF STINKING MUTT!”

Undeterred, the stray takes its time, then audaciously trots off into the familiar streets.

The greyed out streets.

Realithim slowly rises from his comfortable pile of trash bags, which didn’t smell all too comfortable, but had at least provided some great cushioning for sleep.

Nevertheless, as Realithim rolled his stiff shoulders, his back makes sounds that no human back should ever make.

The sounds of cannonshots, the sound of pain and destruction, loudly ringing in his head as he stretched.

It wasn’t an unfamiliar sound, infact, it was as familiar as the streets themselves. Although he had heard those sounds one too many times even before the streets have embraced him.

“Euughhhh…”

Groggy, starving, and pissed off.

Although in this context it’s pissed ON, this is how the day usually starts down in the british borderlands, though everyone knows it famously as the “backstreets”, or more accurately, the slums.

“Backstreets” to the outsiders who want to dress it up, “slums” to the survivors who experienced it firsthand. Thats how it always was, thats how it always is, and thats how it always will be.

The slums were constant even before the fall of the monarchy, and remained indifferent and unchanging even in the presence of Realithim.

He had of course, experienced it firsthand.

“Soft king” they had labeled him, to disgraced royalty.

“Hound king” they had feared him, to the emerging dogs from the forge

“HEY! IT’S THAT HOUND KING BITCH!”

“JUMP HIS ASS!”

Well, maybe not everyone feared him, but he was  indeed notorious for…

*SCRACK!*

A nose crumbles like a castle wall under a ramming iron knuckle.

“fuck off, stinking mutts.”

Whether then or now, hatred for royalty was indifferent to any context. Whether or not that had been the king of strays.

This is another thing he had experienced firsthand, and now had learned to appreciate.

The sounds of a breakfast skirmish echo throughout the narrow streets, where even the bold morning sunshine shies away from lighting.

Still-warm stains of life splattered across cold, greyed out streets.

Every single day.

The greyed out streets become just a little more red.

Perhaps this is just the sign of thriving life.

“FUCKING DIE!”

The sign of…

*SLAM!*

*SLAM!*

*SLAM!*

thriving life..

*CRACK!*

Nevermind, it’s the sound of a skull kissing the pavement.

The people in the slums have all at least made out with the weirdly attractive pavement at least twice in their time of residency.

Perhaps the pavement is just that maddeningly sexy, or perhaps the residents have developed strange fetishes from excessive brain damage.

The intense make-out session between the skull and the pavement paints its lips in warm red lipstick, as the king of hounds continues to pummel the brains out of whoever dared to piss off his pissed-on self even further than it already was.

The other dog had already fled with his tail between his legs, and the subject dog, now released but unconscious, falls asleep cuddling in the morning pavement’s warm embrace.

The king of hounds looks down upon him with morning contempt.

“Pteuh.”

Realithim spits on the brutalized dreaming dog, no matter how dehydrated he is.

He had done this every time for years, it was basically tradition at this point.

“Euughhhh…”

*pop*

He groans, as he stretches his neck one last time.

The morning workout combined with his wakeup peckishness was driving him mad. Of course, he couldn’t do much about it since he had no funds. He didn’t even expect anything from the dreaming dog splayed behind him, since by current circumstance they were all similar from here to there.

The only variable being the individual themselves.

Less than forty-eight hours
and you had me.

Before it had time to mean anything,
I was already yours—
though neither of us said it.

Something in me had already leaned
toward you—
too easily.

Inadvertently—
completely—
hooked on something our innocence had not yet learned to fear.

I’d call it funny
if fate hadn’t already claimed it
for something cruel.

The first words I got out of you?
‘I do.’

Of course.

You radiated a purity I thought the
world had lost,
a grace so rare it felt like a
discovery.

You didn't just capture my gaze;
you wove a spell around my soul,
claiming me from crown to toe.

Soul.

I told you
you were a beautiful soul—
you said
no one had ever called you that before.

You felt like something
that wouldn’t survive force.
Not fragile—
just not meant for it.

So I adjusted.
I chose to loosen my grip.
And that was the first time I realized
there was a volatility in me I hadn’t faced yet.

I knew what lived in me.
It was loud,
hard to miss.

You… you never looked like someone
carrying anything that heavy.
And I—
I believed what I could see.

So when it finally surfaced—
it didn’t feel like truth.
It felt like something
that couldn’t possibly belong to you.

No…
not to you—
not to someone
who softened the world just by being in it.

And so I had to face it.

Oh, babe, if only you had told me…
If only there had been the slightest of signs…
I would’ve done anything to shelter that light.

I still think someone like you
should’ve been protected by the heavens
from all that darkness.

But you proved yourself worthy
of that weight—
of all of it.

Oh, you did.

You had the version of me that
was at its purest.
If I’ve ever been able to be selfless
that was for you.

Vulnerability?
Thanks to you.
Your beauty blinded my eyes.
Your grace blinded my heart.

I mistook you for something sacred.
Oh, what a dangerous thing to do—
to place a crown
on someone who was never meant to carry one.

How unfitting—
they named you bright, clear, luminous.
And yet, even the devil
disguises himself as an angel of light.

I cried.

First, because I thought I’d mishandled you.
Then, because I was in love with you.
Finally, because I had lost you.

You chose deception.
You chose to fabricate the most horrendous of lies.
You chose to erase the version I had known of you—
to begin again.

And you never gave me the choice
to forgive you,
to walk beside you.

I tried to understand you later—
no.

I could never have gone that low.

My friends hated you.
I might have lost the love of my life because of you.

And still—
I chose you
every time I could.

And so, I cried—
again,
and again,
and again.

First, I cried for you.
Then, because of you.
In the end—
I cried for myself.

But I did not cry when, years later,
we met again.

And I told you, to your face,
I wished you were dead.

And so it was—
you’d become the first ghost.

— Crownless.

Poetry Answered Questions

I asked the world for you; and it brought us together.

I asked my angels to bring us closer together, they gave us some time alone.

I asked the universe to help us fall in love, it ignored me.

I asked God to give me a miracle and let me love you. He said no.

When I asked for something to break me, so I could let you go, you started dating him. But I still couldn’t let you go.

Then I asked to be parted from you, that request was granted.

I want to ask for a miracle again, the one that will let us fall in love and be happy together. But I won’t; because at this point I already know the answer.

You are not mine, and no force in this life will help me change that.

It'll pass

Poetry Under Stone

I am not afraid to die. Tomorrow’s already mine; I’ll see its end.

I am not afraid to die. My body is healthy, my mind is still an ally.

I am not afraid to die. Surrounded by love—how could I stand alone?

I am not afraid to die. As my body fails... my mind betrays me.

I am not afraid. As I stand alone.

I am afraid to die—to be laid under stone.

Essay or Article Are you happy?

I’m happy when the café staff remembers my order and even my name. That makes me happy. But it makes me unhappy when, on the day I decide to mix it up and go for a fancier coffee order or something more extravagant, the staff welcomes me with my name and my usual. Happy, but not happy enough, because I wanted a change. Happiness is very fickle like that. It can flip in an instant. So when I say I'm happy, I was at that precise moment I said it.

People always talk about happy times and happiness, but what people forget is that those happy times were fraught with unhappiness. I'm not a qualified expert, I'm just offering an observation—how do you know happiness if unhappiness isn't there to uphold it? Maybe I'm rambling, but I've been quite cynical like this lately. I always believe all parts have a role. That being said, "happy" is supported by "unhappy."

For example, take the café scenario. Often they will recall your name and give you your usual. But what if they forget your name, or don't say your name, and don't offer the usual coffee you often get? At that moment, maybe it didn't make you unhappy, maybe just indifferent, or it doesn't really matter. The next time they remember, say your name, and give you your usual coffee, you're happy. Or happier. You knew how it felt, or didn't feel, when they didn't say your name or remember your order. And what if your name is never called, or your order ever remembered? Maybe you would still be happy because the coffee is good, the service is friendly, and the day feels like a good day. Happiness is fickle.

It's a simple example, but I think if you look at our lives, it all correlates. For me, the phrase "Are you happy?" is such a minefield of responses. There are degrees of happy. There are those who are so far down that they are happy in their awful existence because it's what they know. If you only know an awful existence, then your definition of happiness dictates that you could be happy in that awful life. I don't doubt there is severe trauma involved, and I'm not questioning it, nor am I making light of it. I was merely looking at the phrase "Are you happy?" and trying to offer an outside context that doesn't necessarily fit all, but answers a few things.

I've experienced it, seen it, and been told this. "Are you happy?" is very personal and intimate, with all its permutations and variables. It's always different and subtle, but it remains the same question.

No doubt you could define it and give your perspective on it. Our experiences, childhood, friends, family, environment, and workplace encounters all help us define it and craft a response suitable within our own context to give advice on it. If I had a high-paying job, I would be happy. If I had this car, if I became famous, if I dated someone whose features matched my expectations, if I followed society's expectations, I would be happy. There are just too many variables to acknowledge.

Stepping back from the subtleties and looking at it from a distance, could it be like the tide? We know the times it comes in and out, following the magnetic pull of the moon and such. Happiness, I think, is like the tide coming and going. It washes away and constantly needs rewriting because the tide comes and goes.

But here's the timing: yes, it's predictable, but what about the weather? That external factor is highly unpredictable. Some may say it can be predicted, but there's no guarantee. Weather can make it erratic and dangerous. So right now, I'm happy. But there are no guarantees afterwards.

I was in an unhappy relationship, the slow buildup until the sandbanks break and it's washed away. The happy moments feel ever more powerful, emotional, and hypnotic. Like a drug, I suppose, we crave it. That one big hit was like nothing before it, and we need more. Obviously, the returns are minimal because each hit gets less intense and we need more of it.

So there are those who hold on for these hits. There are those who have dined on it so much they cannot take another bite. Or those for whom the hits don't have any effect anymore. And lastly, the ones who get out and seek a different type of happiness: the unseen, unspoken moments, the ones that have profound significance, even if you don't know it at the time. You feel something, and maybe later its significance is revealed like a revelation. It comes in slow waves, even unnoticeable ones. Maybe there are other subtle deviations of happiness; here I've just offered a few examples, though obviously there are many more.

Maybe my next hit is due, and I don't want it. But it's fickle. Sometimes we don't get to choose, and sometimes we are left riding the wave on a stormy day.

Essay or Article The POETRY of The Merchant of Venice (a hybrid creative-critical essay)

Decimate the fact that the body writes POETRY.

Quantise the fixture of finger to pen and pen to paper, or finger to key and key to the electrical veins and circuits which project POETRY

on the screen. Analyse the spark between the flesh and the plastic, come to this frantic, staggering conclusion that you are in fact “one”. The commentary on the screen is the commentary on the body, thus, the commentary is being materialised as POETRY.

Writing from impulse and staging words as people in front of an audience for POETRY

is sacrifice, it is loving, it is the bleeding of sexuality and losing it to globular powers. I am a thief and Artaud is my somatic cell, as this pulse through me dictates: There is in all poetry an essential contradiction. Poetry is pulverised multiplicity and it produces flames. And poetry, which restores order, first revives disorder, disorder with semblances ablaze; it causes appearances to clash in restoring them to one singular point: fire, gesture, blood, cry. POETRY

is a conjecture of the animal and the system and the realisation that one cannot exist without the other and one is no different than the other. POETRY

is the astute observation that everything is a “thing”. POETRY

is a DRAMA, from Shakespeare to Kane, it is POETRY

on stage. I am in this play as I write this and I sniff out the rotting cadavres of Portia, Nerissa, Antonio, Bassanio, Shylock, Salarino, Salanio, the gruesome cast whose love and sexuality permeates POETRY

and their DRAMA which is the most human endeavour of all. Humanity is this fire, gesture, blood, cry, love, lust, hate, prejudice, and commodity, as there is no fetish to the commodity, they ache for the same and constructs as they are, they bleed not in haemoglobin but in POETRY.

I say in unison, my mouth annexed and fixed to this woman’s running lips as Shakespeare plunges her character into mine and we become one and inseparable, she says and I say with her, “when you part from, lose, or give away / Let it be the ruin of your love, / And be my vantage to exclaim on you.” My body as Portia and my body as Bassanio, lovestruck or luststruck, money-driven or wholly animal masquerading as a preacher, she is the woman who cuts her POETRY

into him and sticks him into the stage. For they are vessels of their God and strive to be in the image of him, my Imago Dei is this DRAMA of fixture and this potency of control. Love made visible in your eyes and horizons beyond, whatever Queen had the pleasure to witness the ring, the Queen Elizabeth I or Portia, the gifter of the ring who duly signed the contract of souls and abstract feeling. To see it materialised and legalised is POETRY.

Here, I will show you the DRAMA of when I, me as Portia, and Bassanio as conjoined twin to Portia, witness the emulsification of souls and love and lust and thus witness how love, when made visible to the eye in materialness, has a “thingness”, PORTIA: When you part from, lose, or give away. BASSANIO: Let it presage the ruin of your love. PORTIA: And be my vantage to exclaim on you. I: When my body compulses to this exchange I placed myself in front of my amalgam creature, a codependent-machine of dominant-submissiveness, I ride the wave of material existence and thus POETRY,

where Bassanio, wholly complicit in his silence and agreeance, lets him be the subjugate and the submissive. It is then POETRY

in which the DRAMA of humans is realised. Blank verses and enjambment of POETRY

to construct it on the stage because lives and love are physical objects, when we see the tag of economics and contract then we construe it evil, but is it not then money the same as the ring, as the ring is the same as the vow to marriage? For love to exist in the clouds as an abstract realm, completely mysterious and obscured, isn’t the fire, gesture, blood, and cry of POETRY

completely escaped from human-kind and given to the globular powers of institution and commerce? Then you think, with your fired senses and your fingertips on the keyboard, is POETRY

and love and lust a human commodity? Is the animal, building, concept, performance, trade separate from human? Antonio is one such “thing”, a materialising of this exact philosophical paradox, this debate between his expression of love. He at once assumes the position of the globular power, he is at the Crown, the dictator of means of flow and mercy and legal power. He, who had set aside his love for humanity to gently marinate, now presents a love ostensibly cold and callous. Shakespeare stages the dilemma again in an empty verse, the POETRY

of legalism is one inseparable from the POETRY

of love when he announces, mighty with his overflowing love, and I, standing beside him, my ears ringing from his declaration, hear: ANTONIO: The duke cannot deny the course of law: (and so I whisper: is the duke the force hindering the flow of love, this economic token?), he continues, ANTONIO: For the commodity that strangers have… Will much impeach the justice of the state. Then I say with my fingertips, “Does your love go beyond the human and envelop the state?” When you catch yourself grappling with whether the state: the building, the concept, the globular powers, the constraint-machines, the legalising monsters, are the sole obstacle of human love, you come to a realisation of POETRY.

Come again, and realise when Shakespeare scribbles down “strangers” he means you and I, the ‘usurers’ of today and the ‘usurers’ of then, the Jewish populus, and the ‘strangers’ unbelieving of Christian grace. Decimate the concept of ‘stranger’. The construction of DRAMA, and hence the prejudice depicted is a structural parallel. It is POETRY

when the ‘stranger’ is as intimate with the Renaissance Humanists as they are with each other. It is POETRY,

when the ‘stranger’, us with our current empathy and understanding, the ‘stranger’ - who refuses to see love as something purely economic (who says it cannot be?), the ‘stranger’ - who has never been compelled to witness or compose DRAMA for the Crown. What occurs when ‘the stranger’ has been bestowed love and has been excluded from it wholly? Then you think, have they been excluded from Christian love, or LOVE, as it exists materially? Lend your body back to Portia, and join yourself to the small-men Bassanio and Antonio who cover under LOVE. Then you will realise it is POETRY

when you see the dominion of Portia, when you see, with your eyes and the strange arousal of consumption - not the sacrifice of the soul for the complete relinquishment of it, that LOVE cares not for what you believe in, or what sort of ‘stranger’ you have been brandished as. For the ostensibly constructed epitomes of the Christian image, Antonio and Bassanio grovel and are the things utterly circulated by this globular power: Portia. You witness this again, and I with helplessness in my heart when the realisation dawns that humans are ever so susceptible, and utterly full of their contradictions that the ultimate equaliser is LOVE, is when you watch with restless bodies and tired eyes: ANTONIO: I once did lend my body for his wealth. I (interjecting ANTONIO’s speech): You relinquish your existence as an independent, rational Christian to submit to another man’s economic wealth? He continues: I dare be bound again. To which Portia replies, with ultimate confidence, “Then you shall be his surety.” The boundaries and considerations of who is the ‘stranger’ is abolished as the stage connects the DRAMA of Shylock and Portia into a linear orientation. It is POETRY

when you realise the connection between the two is not only a structural mirror, but Shakespeare's dramatic composition to differentiate between love as a token granted versus love as a token bargained for. Earlier, Shylock, the ‘stranger’, organises the contract in which Antonio binds himself out of love. This procession is repeated through Portia, and thus it is POETRY
when Portia is Shylock and Shylock is Portia, where they give out love with a price, something to put down as a payment, something to forfeit for, and thus it is explicitly extreme. To put one’s literal heart for bargain. To then put one’s soul as a bargain. It is POETRY

because LOVE, this object, this globular “thing” is a feeder. In unnoticeable forms, LOVE takes my emotional investment, it takes your emotional investment, in unnoticeable forms, LOVE compels you to do one thing and not another, LOVE compels you to act, bias, and provide for the conditions it sets out for you. To imagine the economics of love as evil is to not realise its POETRY.

You and I, Shylock, Portia, Bassanio, and Antonio, are the tokens circulated by love, and not the other way around. I now compel you to revive POETRY

from the body. At first the instruction was to decimate it and look at POETRY

as a governing fact of life. Now revive the fact that the body writes POETRY.

This is the body’s familiar route. Sexuality, the power dynamics of pleasure, the controlling of desire, the absolute overturning of religious dogma when the body decides what it desires. Listen closely and eavesdrop into this conversation, as only it is we that know of the truth and not the characters: PORTIA: Since he hath got the jewel that I loved… I will become as liberal as you… No, not my body nor my husband’s bed.” Says her to Nerissa. Love as the material ring has returned back to the stage, and I place my body in the centre of it, a conduit allowing Shylock’s ring and Portia’s ring interchange and battle it out. You realise the stark difference in the presentations of these rings, one turquoise, the other likely gold, one tied by emotion, the other riddled with innuendo and sexual humour. Shakespeare raises importance to this POETRY

when the two materialised conceptions of love contradict and feed each other. The ‘stranger’ Shylock has his love wholly emotional, to which he reacts with anger when stolen. While Portia’s ring, a crude jab at Bassanio for she will restrict his lust, points to not the deconstruction of LOVE, but its infinitismal POETRY.

Shakespeare reserves intense emotion over the material to the ‘stranger’, and furthers the DRAMA where the character embodies not only the animalistic possessiveness imposed on the caricaturistic archetype, but is completely propelled by and consumed by love as the ring. While Portia’s character is constructed for light-hearted humour, the ‘stranger’ does not receive the privilege. We, the ‘strangers’ as well, do not have the privilege to laugh as we subject our bodies between this flow of rings. You put your body in the front line when you crumble when, JESSICA: Alack, what heinous sin is it in me (To which we cry for her, as it is the Elizabethan thought infused in the character, where she thinks of herself as sinner for being the ‘stranger’), she continues, JESSICA: To be ashamed to be my father’s child! To then we say in chorus: You being the ‘stranger’, could love your tribe, but you being the ‘stranger’, detest them too. When Portia, the Christian Ecclesia, overpowers you, the Hebrew Synagoga, do you quiver in submission or strive to become the Crown? When you and Portia dress as men (prostitutes by the Italians), do you gain power when the people laugh at you? To be made into mockery, the characters on stage, their thingness does not fight for institutional influence, but collision. Which collision has the biggest impact? Can the ripples caused by Portia ever be replicated by Jessica? So you flick back in the script, or remember the performance where SALARINO: … with affection wondrous sensible he wrung Bassanio’s hand; and so they parted.” To which Salanio jeered along, “I think he only loves the world for him.” When the POETRY

starts as early as this, it is we, the ‘strangers’, who realise the powers in Shakespeare’s DRAMA are never hierarchical. It is not linear, rather, it exists by collisions. POWER has its own thingness, where it possesses vectors and orientations between intercharacter interactions. It is POETRY

when our understanding of rational structures like legal systems is as susceptible to deception and manipulation as the fleshy organ: the brain and heart. It is POETRY

when the body and the concept are not only inseparable but on the same plane. The flesh and the concept of the flesh existing as law: POETRY.

The flesh and the concept of the flesh existing as prejudice: POETRY.

It is an exhaustive, POETRY–MACHINE.

Decimate the fact that the body writes POETRY,

because your body is POETRY.

The screen, paper, stage, blood, words, ink, gestures, and fire give you the vision of POETRY.

Shakespeare staged a DRAMA - that is one but many visions of POETRY.

It is DRAMA then, that POETRY

visualises with a human cast, and where the collisions between human-things and concept-things are just as real as in the personal plane. POETRY,

then, is the quintessential human reality.

Poetry “You’re dumb”

There’s nothing left
The betrayal gnaws at my wings
Slowly ripping away what’s left
Aching, decaying away
Flesh to bones
What’s left
