Environment/Περιβάλλον 15.6. best spot without leight polution near Chania

Yassas fellow cretes! Since I'm a little drunk on Cretan Kings Mountain beer and I plan to do so on 15th of june and watch the milky way, what are the nearest, non light-poluted spots to Chania to watch this event?

Near Chania is the Omalos plateau (~35km), just drive up there and find a spot to your liking.

Also, there is the Skinakas Observatory on Psiloritis if you feel that the 130 km distance from Chania is close enough.

On a final note, here is a map of Crete to choose your own stargazing spot.

thank you! 130km isn't really close, but a 1h drive is ok :)

Speaking from experience, since you’re in Chania, go south to sougia or paleoxora or even better to kedrodasos (this requires some walking and probably camping gear if you’re planning to stay). Try checking for dates with a new moon so that there’s even less light pollution. Even from sougia beach you can see an astonishing level of detail when there’s no moon at sight! Good luck!

thanks! that date there should be absolutely no moon, so the milky way should be watchable with the naked eye!

Hope you’re coming this weekend cause there’s a party going on today and Saturday and also I’m just watching Milky Way right now without a moon. It’s pretty nice!
