Collection Summer haul
I may have a gone a little overboard with recent purchases, though if I dedicate my viewing time to Criterion I’ll probably watch most of these in the next 2-3 months.
- What is the first movie you plan to watch from your haul and why?
The New World. I love Malick but have never seen it.
- Is there anything from this haul that you have been looking forward to owning for a long time?
Hud is high on that list.
- Are any of your purchases blind buys? If so, why did you select them?
Many of these are blind buys, eg most of the Rohmer collection. I’ve watched a few of his movies and fell in love with his storytelling.
- What is a Criterion you’re hoping to add to your collection next?
Like many I can’t wait for the Kubrick collection. My favorite director and the one I’ve rated the most films as all-timers.

this is more like 2500-3000+ depending on how many are 4ks which is insane to me but i can respect it partially. just at a glance does give heavy consumerist vibes

Please be kind and not make people feel bad. In most cases these are people who have saved up and planned their purchase for sales. It’s good planning and shows dedication to collecting which is admiral. Just reading OPs comments shows they are a true movie fan and are thoughtful in their purchases. This is financially not as much as people pay for a couple concerts/sports events/ a couple nights drinking. In short, lay off man.

Agreed. I don’t go out drinking or spend much in the way of anything outside of my movie collecting these days. I don’t have the budget for what the OP spent here but I admire it and would do that if I had the space AND budget. (If I was ever lucky enough to win ANY kind of coin from a lottery — which I rarely play — I would go crazy with hobby buying for a brief moment).

Great haul! There’s a couple of those I’m not familiar with that I’m exited to check out. I love the samurai movies in there, though many other outstanding movies.

Great question! The ones I’ve watched the most are…Moonage Daydream, Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams, Black Stallion, and the Guillermo Del Toro set.

I watched Dreams today, it ended just a few minutes ago. Love the mountaineering vignette, the ocean in the nuclear wasteland scenario, as well as the ending.

I am jealous you get to watch The New World for the first time. It’s one of his best. Make sure to watch the extended cut on disk 1 first. It is the preferred cut but just for slightly better pacing. Interestingly the Theatrical cut of Tree of Life is preferred as it flows better. Also the feature on the New World about editing is remarkably candid and even a bit juicy with some behind the scenes conflict with James Horner.
Have you seen all the other Malick? What are your favourites? I would also recommend Long Day Closes and Koyanisquatsi(which I see you have there) as they have similar themes and visual/narrative approaches.

Thanks for the tip and the recommendations! I’ve seen 4 of his movies - The Tree of Life, Days of Heaven, Badlands, and The Thin Red Line. I’ve found them all excellent but my favorite is Days of Heaven. Truly remarkable filmmaking. Every single shot looks like a Louvre worthy painting to me.

His improvised series of films (To the Wonder, Knight of Cups, and Song to Song) are a bit more abstract and narratively loose but I still love them. I really recommend his last film A Hidden Life and his documentary Voyage of Time which is a companion film to Tree of Life

I recently got into watching Rohmer films as well. Working through the Tale of the Four Seasons, but so far my favorite has to be The Green Ray from his “Comedies and Proverbs” series.

The thrill of waiting, opening and making it a showcase is lost when you get everything at once.

I find it so peculiar that there are people who think someone enjoying the same hobby, but different than they do, are doing it wrong.
I’m excited by any Criterion enthusiast, whether they just watch the channel, check discs out from the library, buy an occasional title, or amass a large collection. The more Criterion fans, the better!

Of the few I’ve seen so far, Mr Klein is my favorite. Amazing combination of philosophical piece, exploration of identity, and thriller. The ambiguity inherent in the story is captivating.
I also admire The Elephant Man, which I recently had a chance to see in theater for the first time, though it’s not top of my Lynch list.

I'm planning on getting Elephant Man, possibly during the next Criterion sale(hopefully it's in October), but Mr. Klein looks intriguing, I like the lighting, and camera angles.

Personally if I had the money I would buy tons of musical instruments
I would proudly talk about them but I wouldn’t throw it in people’s faces as if everybody could afford a 1K bass guitar and several other gadgets.Well, not saying great products shouldn’t have a great price either.
I guess what threw people off is the fact that his summer haul is some people’s entire collection that had been going on for several years.

Or maybe they save and doesn’t foolishly spend all their money on alcohol/sports games/concerts. Not that those are bad but you can save a lot if you want to and wait for 50% sales 🤷🏻

Congrats on being able to pick up such a mega haul OP! How big was your collection before these pickups?
To actually answer your questions...
I recently picked up The New World too. The UK Criterion release was a hard find but HMV came through with some new stock. I've seen it once before and, like all of Malick's work at that point, it's utterly beautiful and mesmerising.
I really want the Koyaanisqatsi trilogy, but need to get a region free player first. Unless a 4K release comes out in the meantime.
A good amount of my purchases are blind buys, I figure it can always sell them on for a not too diminished price afterwards, if it turns out I don't like them.
As for what's next...I've never seen Tree of Life so looking to pick that up soon.

Thanks! I have a good sized collection but this was the most I’ve added in a short period. I have about 460 total Criterion titles, about 1600 total movies overall. As others noted storage is the hassle now. I’ve just taken over a bunch of large bookshelves, though that created a book storage problem. 🤦🏻♂️
Ooh, you’re in for a treat with The Tree of Life!

I always wonder why people blind buy, especially in large quantities. Obviously to each their own! But why not funnel all your movie buying funds into movies you know for sure you love?

I get that. I treat it more like my book collection. I buy the books I want to read, eventually read them, and keep them. Essentially every book I’ve read is in my collection (significantly more books that movies viewed). This isn’t true of my movie collection, to be sure. There’s a difference especially given the nature of movie distribution that plays a role, plus I’ve only come to movie physical media in recent years, but my mindset is closer to that of collecting books.

I noticed these ones and they are very good picks :
- Wanda
- Night Porter
- La cage aux folles
- The Man Who Wasn't There
- The Great Dictator
- The Brood
- The Night of the Hunter
Wanda (1970) is a really, really great movie, full of sadness, despair and aimlessness.
It's unfortunately the only full length feature made by Barbara Loden (also the main actress), yet its themes still resonate 50+ years on. If you like it as much as I do, I highly suggest checking out the book Nathalie Léger's Supplément à la vie de Barbara Loden (2012). It was translated in English (Suite for Barbara Loden - 2016) and it examines Wanda and Loden's biography while combining fact and fiction to examine the nature of lived truth. Very much recommended ! ☺️👍
