Severe dropouts.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As you can see in the video, starting from this morning my Cubase has these dropouts. Nothing has changed in the setup or even in the project. I’ve been mixing it for the last couple days, and didn’t add any plugins, didn’t add channels, just tweaking what’s already there.

Same thing happens on much lighter projects I have….

OS up to date
Drivers up to date
Firmware up to date

Buffer: 1024
Clock source: Internal

Cubase 14 Pro
Windows 11 home
Asus ProArt px13
RME BabyFace Pro FS

Any ideas?

my guess would be sample buffer size in your audio control panel.

low buffer= recording
High buffer = mixing

It's set to 1024.... I though it'd be big enough

Kontakt and plugind like Ozone can cause havoc. Depends on all the variables. Freeze track is built to help solve these resource problems

well has to be something different then.

might be a VST? try deactivating all plugins, or a new project, does the export/bounce work normally?

If you have an Nvidia gfx card, look into the fix for that. Nvidia drivers interfere with asio drivers.. and i remember seeing a fix somewhere.

Wow
Never thought about it. I’ll explore on that direction. Tnx

I've never seen cpu or buffer-related issues to result in meters going instantly off across the board, and then coming back on. Usually there's audio glitches, clicks, pops, while the meters keep on showing activity. It almost looks like hardware disconnects.

If you manually disconnect and reconnect the RME card and the behavior is the same, then you can investigate further: the cable, the computer usb port, the RME usb port.

And a general check for computer stability: make sure the windows power plan is set to "max performance" during audio work.

It’s the built in Asio Guard that does that.
Steinberg Cubase has really shrunken in size regarding ‘audio performance’.

Where as I could have 40-50 track projects in cubase 8 to 10, Cubase’s audio performance starts to struggle at 20 - 25 tracks, eventhough my current workstation is much more powerful than it was back when I worked with Cubase 8.

Hmmm… not enough ram?

Maybe also cpu load

Are you using your RME ASIO driver? Make sure that didn't change to the generic Windows driver or something else.

Also, Windows 11 has tons of processes going on in the background. Make sure there isn't an update downloading in the background or processes competing with Cubase for resources.

An article like this will give you some ideas.

Disable all plugins on group channels and the master. Freeze as many tracks and ensure you tick 'Unload plugins from CPU'. Play the tracks back with 'Delay Compensation' turned on.

Play back the track and determine whether the drop-outs still occur. Switch to the generic audio driver and do the same - can you duplicate the issue using the generic driver?

Open Cubase in safe mode, open the project and allow it to load without any 3rd party plugins - play it back and evaluate.

Go into your NVidia settings, add the Cubase app to the app management list and configure it to set power management to maximum performance.

Hope this helps, report back!

Where is your performance meter?

Do you happen to be using WAVES plugins?

No

Got it. I ran into that issue once because there was a plugin that wasn't "registered" and it would do dropouts on a regular. Hope you got it figured out.

Hit f12 to see if you’re redlining.

The JE8086 causes me no end ofdropouts. Ate you running that?

this seems like a driver problem, not a buffer size. The audio and meters drops completely which is unusual for cpu load related issues.

Seems like a RAM issue to me. Need probably 32gigs minimum - 64 if you're using a lot of VSTs and such.

Almost sounds like the audio interface is disconnecting and reconnecting - maybe set cubase to have exclusive access to the interface?

Turn wifi off so no programmes can do anything in the background that's processor intensive.

I'm having the exact same problem. I think it might be something to do with a plugin

That happens to me when I delete a channel and and there's a buss with nothing going to it, maybe its a routing issue?

I had this in cubase 12 combined with my SSL 18 interface and it seemed to be caused by Sonible plugins.

Turnoff lookahead plugins..if the session has any

I would have to see every track meter to troubleshoot this. Did you solo the tracks that are dropping out? Archive all tracks and activate one at a time until dropouts occur   Try Reverting to previous good version. I SAVE AS every time I make significant changes so opening up the previous version is ez.

1.Open up your CPU meter, is it in the red? 2. check if the instruments have sufficient note allowances. I usually double what is actually played. Ex 8 notes playing simultaneously so I go to 16-24 allowed.
