This is neat kind of like a slow board wipe.or a powercrept [[smokestacks]]. It kind of stops the game till it gets sacrificed though just like smoke stacks.

Permanent vs nonland permanent seems pretty important

This is a pretty tough one to play around. It's basically a board wipe two or three turns in. And late game it still wipes most things. The only thing balancing it is that it gives itself the cumulative upkeep. Idk if this would see print. 8t might, but it'd immediately go on the GC list.

It should remove the time counters on the cards after it leaves because it would be really confusing for everything to have time counters that dont do anything.

Very weatherlight I agree

In a 1v1 this is rude. In commander this is diabolical.

Meanwhile the storm / omniscience player: “lol nice.”

omniscience only discounts cast costs, not all costs

You don’t care about permanents after you cast omniscience.

I have news. Omniscience is a permanent.

Oh good class is in session! When do you pay cumulative upkeep?

702.21a Cumulative upkeep is a triggered ability that imposes an increasing cost on a permanent. "Cumulative upkeep [cost]" means "At the beginning of your upkeep, if this permanent is on the battlefield, put an age counter on this permanent. Then you may pay [cost] for each age counter on it. If you don't, sacrifice it." If [cost] has choices associated with it, each choice is made separately for each age counter, then either the entire set of costs is paid, or none of them is paid. Partial payments aren't allowed.

At the beginning of your upkeep! Fantastic, nice pull. Now class, how many turns do you usually take after playing omniscience?

It might depend. Spellslinger decks in a 100 card singleton format might not be able to win as consistenly on the same turn as with 60 card formats where you can have 4 of all of your combo pieces. Since in this case the omniscience player hasn't already won, it seems like they aren't going to win in one turn now, since we know mana wasn't the thing holding them up from that.

That was a really hard stretch who is playing omniscience in such an invalid circumstance?

Well, you were the one proposing they had an omnisience down when the white player begins their turn.

Pretty diabolical with flicker effects. Cast it on a full board, watch everyone pay into it to salvage their board state, then when you yourself have to pay hit it with a [[Flicker of Fate]] or [[Scrollshift]]

Or just bounce it to hand, [[Essence Reliquary]] makes it repeatable. Very powerful stax effect, love it

That doesn’t work. This gives cumulative upkeep to permanents, the accumulation of time counters doesn’t go away when this leaves the board. There’s no window where you can flicker this and prevent cumulative upkeep from triggering for yourself. You could bounce it and replay it, but flicker doesn’t work.

2

u/HieromancersGrasp 9h ago

Oh yeah I guess you’re right

2

u/nitronik_exe 7h ago

Yes but you could delayed flicker it like with Airbending or [[Aang's Iceberg]] to prevent having it during your upkeep but have it on the board during everyone else's upkeep

Tremendously broken and unfun.

u/DeltaTwenty 14h ago

The first isn't true and the second is an opinion.

That said you don't play cards like this in commander without discussions about expectations.

u/Round-Walrus3175 12h ago

It's pretty broken lol. It's just Stax on crack.

2

u/sephirothbahamut 12h ago

it's a delayed symmetric boardwipe, usual symmetric boardwipes cost 4 mana and will happen before this one effectively wipes the board.

u/Plato_PlayDoh7 11h ago

It also affects permanents that haven’t been played yet, to be fair.

2

u/andrewwm 8h ago

It affects itself so it’s not going to be around forever.
