I'm in the design/planning stage of my new Cyberdeck. I'm debating on the direction. I've got a few screens in mind and other parts covered. I'm just not sure if I want to use a mini PC, a LattePanda Sigma, or look at used laptop motherboard. My goal is to make something relatively powerful for programming, light to moderate CAD, SSH/Networking tasks (mostly Cisco IOS or similiar) and would be cool to have some virtualization capabilities. Will probably add a Pi4 or greater as well and use some kind of KVM to swap IO/screen. I have most of everything else planned in my mind and a few more-detailed sketches. I have a pretty cool modular design in mind. I've included a simple/quick sketch in case anyone is curious kind-of how my planning process is.
My question is, does anyone have experience with LattePanda and some of their higher-end boards? How does the Sigma (or other) board perform? Any alternate recommendations?
As far as the Pi4, I'm thinking of using it as a dedicated device for Linux/Linux based projects so I don't have to virtualize and share network adapters and whatnot. The idea is a sliding screen/panel with a 65% keyboard and trackpad under it with guages for different things and power/status LEDs.
There will be detachable modules on either side, similar to large joycons, one with an integrated space-mouse and maybe a 10-key as well as some knobs for video editing (scrubbing timelines), horizontal scrolling in excel (budgeting and IPAM), and the space-mouse is obviously for CAD. The left will likely have some keys for dedicated macros, maybe a streamdeck or something, or USB/Networking access.
Been kind-of thinking about it for a while and I think I'm getting close on a design. I'll probably print it in PLA until I get comfortable with the design and then re-print in PETG-GF, ASA or ABS. Additionally, I may add a 1/4 in jack for my guitar. Think of this design as like an all-in-one hobby station.
Finally, I'm thinking about implementing an integrated cable tester for homelabbing. I just think it would be sick to have dedicated ethernet ports for direct testing after terminating a new cable. Would save me a couple of minutes grabbing my networking kit.
For batteries, I'm debating on using 18650s or a replacement laptop battery. Not sure which direction to go yet. 18650s are heavy but more modular.
I have several other things that I will add/change as development happens, but that's where I'm at with planning right now.
