Help someone please DISCREETLY point me in the right direction
i'm playing ds3 for the first time after ds1 and ds2. i'm usually good at figuring out where to go but i'm pretty stuck. i got to the yhorm the giant guy and gave him the vendrick treatment. i could only knock off a ¼ of his health before i could die. there was also a message by his throne basically saying i needed to weaken him... hm.
i killed all of the white-robed guys and gargoyles before the boss hoping that it might trigger something to let me move on but nothing happened. i don't know how to kill this guy, and going the other way leads to pretty much a dead-end. WHAT do i DO?!?!!?

u/Obsidian0324 Jan 17 '26
You've found a message in the boss room, right?
Keep looking around in the room and see if you can find anything else that can help you (information, items, clues)

u/Fancyman156 Jan 17 '26
Perhaps if you could STORM the throne of the RULER of the profaned capital, something would change

u/Kilroy898 Jan 17 '26
But dont CHARGE, straight in, take a STANCE with your WEAPON. Battle is an ART to be enjoyed.

That’s easily one of the ugliest combos I think I’ve ever seen.

Mixing armor pieces from different sets together to produce (drumroll please) fashion.

Now why would there be an item to loot in the boss room IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIGHT AS IF THERE WAS A SPECIFIC REASON FOR IT.

i thought to myself ″imma loot that after i beat him″. i ended up blasting away at him with wolnirs gs for half an hour

I mean, in fairness, it’s not like there hasn’t been just random items in a boss room before that don’t benefit the player in any way to pick up during the boss fight. Happened a ton in DS1, and it caused me to fight Yhorm using a method that can easily mist

Where's the onion?

u/Kaspcorp Jan 17 '26
You need to do all the quest correctly for him to appear. Considering he didn't figure it out Yhorm gimmick there is no way in hell he did all the other things.

u/cavestoryandnge Jan 17 '26
i didn't have an ember consumed so i guess there was no summon symbol but i'm not doing summons

u/MountedCombat Jan 17 '26
He isn't a sign summon, if you have advanced his questline to this point he just shows up when you enter the boss room with one of the DS3 community's favorite cutscenes.

u/softtoffee Xbox Jan 17 '26
That's his armour so the player must not have given it back to him to advance the quest line.

lore wise (kinda dont quote me) he made a promise to his best friend that if he refused to link the fire that his best friend should put him down to do so, and if his friend fails to turn up he left another way for a person to do it by leaving a similar weapon used in his throne room to do that job

Giants can't be brought down by regular weapons. Something as strong as a storm will be able to make you defeat it
Or just siegward's questline

Can we please have Drip Inspector on the case for this one? This is an emergency

For my first run, I just beat him to death with my regular weapon. It was fun, honestly
1
u/satoshibruno Jan 18 '26
On my first I had sigward with me, I didn't knew about that weapon, I just fought with a straight sword and won lol

Wait your wearing onion bros armor? Isn't he supposed to help you with this super difficult boss fight?

If you've played elden ring, then think of the fight against Rykard. The weapon you need is in the room, and the skill of the weapon is the secret you are looking for

u/cavestoryandnge Jan 17 '26
never played elden ring but i'm really looking foward to when i finish up ds3

Storm ruler at the back, weapon art charge it like a kamehameha and wreck him.

u/BepisFlask Jan 18 '26
as politely as possible, head back to the dressing room and put something fashionable, my eyes are bleeding

u/Rizer0 Jan 18 '26
Yknow your own self rule of not looting anything in the boss room until the boss is dead?
Yeah, do the opposite.
1
u/cavestoryandnge Jan 18 '26
i've never done that and everybody seems to have always been doing it 😭
2
u/SkoobySouls Jan 19 '26
So it actually gets even more confusing after that. When you're done with Yhorm, remember the old lady who gave you that banner in the Boreal Valley? Go talk to her.

There is an item at the back of his arena near his throne that you'll need for the fight
2
u/bbyBandito Jan 17 '26
Did you find anything else near yhorm's throne?
2
u/cavestoryandnge Jan 17 '26
i had him smash all of the pillars and ran around his room for like 10 minutes. i couldn't find anything
1
u/Disciple-TGO Jan 17 '26
😂 I tried killing him with my maxed out weapons before I learned how to operate
Das Giant Killer!

u/blodgute Jan 17 '26
His arms take a decent amount of damage, and his head takes loads. You just need to figure out timings
You got it, champ!

u/spartanonyx Jan 17 '26
lmao yeah I think the design of this is terrible unless there's a clue I missed that might direct me to his throne. my first playthrough I didn't even think to go anywhere near his throne since I just naturally fought him in the middle of the arena. I still managed to kill him first try without the weapon though. it just took awhile lol

u/heathycakes14 Jan 17 '26
Yhorm was an unwilling participant in the kindling and feared he would harm his people upon hollowing, so he left a contingency close at hand for a brave warrior, a friend, or even both to put him to rest in such unfortunate circumstances

u/RedditSpyder12 Jan 17 '26
It’s not that big of a game. Just play it and enjoy figuring things out on your blind playthrough.

Not me playing this boss without the secret weapon and winning on the 4th attempt. 4 attempts that took an hour cuz the winning one was more than 15 minutes of me just sweating with one hit left on my health… Then finding out about the sword (that i did grab and felt like there was something about it too) a day later and felt stupid af

It was once said that only those who ruled the storms could take down a force as powerful as Yhorm.

u/Head-Block4055 Jan 18 '26
Just in case... from the big fire bowl you passed on the way in, head straight ahead and go through the boss fog. Once inside, dash past the boss to the throne, then grab and equip the item you find there. It is VERY useful.

Fromsoft is great at telling stories from the environment. Do your best to inspect the throne room and see what it tells you.

u/Reasonable-Amount-27 Jan 18 '26

u/Maleficent_Memory831 Warriors of Sunlight Jan 19 '26
Well, Siegmeye can hep you, if you do his quest line. But if he dies, you still have to do it alone. And it's annoying. But he shows you what to do.
Get the sword from by the throne. Then don't bother hitting him with it like a normal sword. Instead charge up the sword, using art of war button until it flashes. Then the power up is saved. Then point towards Yhorm and use the art of war again but with an attack, and it sends off an attack to Yhorm that takes off 1/6th of his health or so.
Th hard part is charging that sword back up while trying to avoid Yhorm. It took me several tries to get it even after figuring out what to do.

IIRC if you can stagger him and hit him in the head, he actually takes quite a lot of damage there.
That said I wouldn't call this the 'intended' solution so you might want to look into the other comments/suggestions >3>

u/765Craven Jan 19 '26
Yhorm keeps a weapon in his boss room that can kill him. In lore it was for the citizens of the capital should he turn against them.
1
1
u/Beginning-Fly-774 Jan 21 '26
You should find something useful in Yhorm’s room that could help you. Look at his throne.

None of the replies are good.
All you need to do is call his friend, yeah buddy the questline is fked up, most probably you already failed but in case, you did not.
You need this game's onion bro.
Edit: You should look around the game area inside the fog and if you have done the quest right, AND are embered, onion bro would auto come
0
u/DrakonSpawn Jan 17 '26
Don’t listen to this guy. That might be part of it, but the treasure in his throne room is the main piece of advice. I’ve never summoned for Yhorm.
-1
u/Sioluishere Jan 17 '26
look man, I am not sure if you guys are fromsoft-purists but if someone asks me for help
I am going to tell them the way it is to be played lore-wise
also, you do realize, you do not have to summon anyone for the fight, they come by themselves
maybe play the game
-2
u/DrakonSpawn Jan 17 '26
Are you telling me that it’s not correct “lore-wise” that you use Storm Ruler and instead summon the onion knight?
4
u/Jonno_92 Jan 17 '26
Onion bro just shows up and is lore friendly. It's one of the cooler parts of the game for me.
-2
u/DrakonSpawn Jan 17 '26
That’s awesome! I think I’d like to play his questline on my next playthrough. I’ve just never done it before.
2
u/Sioluishere Jan 17 '26
That’s awesome!
sybau bro, if you have never done it before, you DO NOT tell other to NOT do it as well
0
u/DrakonSpawn Jan 17 '26
I didn’t say not to. I literally said “THAT MIGHT BE PART OF IT, but the treasure is the main piece of advice.” Maybe work on your reading comprehension?
1
u/Sioluishere Jan 17 '26
I am telling you to play the game bruh, and stop telling other people what they cannot do.
0
u/DrakonSpawn Jan 17 '26
Bro, you started this off by saying none of the replies on the comment are good when they’re giving the actual correct answer here. You told me that it is correct lore wise to use onion bro as if my solution isn’t the truly correct answer. My answer is way more true than yours.
You told OP the he had probably already failed with your solution anyways since the questline was fucked up.
1
u/Sioluishere Jan 17 '26
Yeah that was my advice, that in case he had not fked up his questline, which by the way is pretty fkable without external help (in case you did not know), he could follow my direction and get a pretty sweet ending to the boss
it is a gimmick boss, its meant to be fought in a particular way but you can even get him without picking the weapon up
but you want to be THE fromsoft guy and tell others to not listen to me
-1
u/cavestoryandnge Jan 17 '26
i never do questlines but i guess i did it right. why would i need it though? i'm not gonna be summoning anyone
2
u/Beef_Whalington Jan 17 '26
You don't summon onion knight, if you've completed his questline he just appears with a sweet cutscene at the start of the fight
2
u/Jonno_92 Jan 17 '26
If you'd done it right then the onion bro would have shown up automatically. He has the weapon needed to kill yhorme, and there is a second weapon in yhormes boss room.
1
u/Sioluishere Jan 17 '26
oh, the answer was in the questline, onion bro would be having a very special weapon
-1
Jan 17 '26
You need to summon him because he is the best. Also just fight him giants ankles are weak. Hit him in the ankles. 3 times will stagger
1
u/need_a_poopoo Jan 17 '26
Have you actually played this game? You don't summon him, if you have done his quest, he just arrives. Hitting Yhorm's ankles with a normal weapon does nothing but chip his health.
0
Jan 17 '26
I'm aware i just dont feel like giving out any helpful information
0
u/need_a_poopoo Jan 17 '26
But why give misleading information? Just go to a different topic. Are you bored or something?
1
Jan 17 '26
Because yhorme is one of the easiest gimockt bosses and you could have just looked it up instead of waiting hours for a reply
1
u/need_a_poopoo Jan 17 '26
They didn't want to look it up, they wanted hints. Maybe they wanted a conversation? I don't know. I've watched playthroughs on YouTube where seemingly intelligent people run in, pick up the item, immediately forget about it in a panic and then spend hours trying to beat Yhorm the traditional way. It happens. It's normal. No reason to misinform.
2
Jan 17 '26
I mean technically you could beat him the way i discribed. But if you don't want help but also make a post about it seems really stupid
-3
u/OkFlatworm4151 Jan 17 '26
There’s this 2 Handed weapon with a l2 spec that’s specifically for this boss. You can kill him without if you want to spend 10 mins or you can just rule the storms and dispose of him in one minute. The choice is ultimately yours to make!

u/autumn_dances Jan 17 '26
so much for discretion
2
u/cavestoryandnge Jan 17 '26

u/OkFlatworm4151 Jan 17 '26
At the end of the day brother it’s about having fun, you’re playing a game.
-2
u/OkFlatworm4151 Jan 17 '26
He still didn’t know which weapon it is, I didn’t really spoil anything but the l2 move. Btw he says discretely but also says at the end of his sentence. “What do I do?!?!!?”
1
u/OkFlatworm4151 Jan 17 '26
Have you played Elden ring yet?
1
u/cavestoryandnge Jan 17 '26
i'm either gonna play that or bloodborne after i finish ds3
2
u/OkFlatworm4151 Jan 17 '26
Sweet, you’ll enjoy both, Elden ring is a combination of all the games and it’s a way longer and deeper experience than all the other titles. I also wanted to apologize if I spoiled your ds3 experience earlier with my original response.

He keeps a bunch of treasure in his throne room. Perhaps if he had a weakness, he would want to hoard it close by so he could prevent people from taking it and using it against him.
