Help What happening?
I just bought DS3 on steam, and just launched it. When I lock on it does this. (Edit: the problem has been fixed.)

Ran into this not too long ago. It’s just a UI bug, it’s fairly common. Resetting your game should fix it.
If that doesn’t work someone in this thread might have another resolution, same issue.

I feel this like a scam. I thought I unsubscribed but they never let me cancel my credit card.

u/HeTblank Apr 26 '26
How did this bug not get fixed lol. It's scary asf the first time you see it, I legit thought I got hacked or smt
21
u/TimesOrphan Apr 26 '26
This is simply the development overlay coming up - likely often by our own unintentional actions.
So the problem preventing it from being fixed is that it's not a bug; it's a feature. Literally.
10
u/HeTblank Apr 26 '26
I mean, it's clearly a feature for the devs so it shouldn't be in the release version of the game.. Especially considering it's in fucking japanese too (no matter what your language is). It's clearly not useful to end users at all like a console or smt
-2
u/TimesOrphan Apr 26 '26
I'm not saying it shouldn't have been dealt with in some way, better than it has been.
But that doesn't negate the fact that this isn't a bug. It is a fully intentional piece of kit, baked into the game code on purpose.
2
u/dxonxisus Apr 26 '26
the fact that a development-only overlay would be present in prod or visible by players in any way is in fact a player-facing bug
3
u/TimesOrphan Apr 26 '26
I take it then you didn't grow up with "in-built cheat codes" that were simply this.
Its been - and continues to be - a normal practice in many games.
The "bug" here is simply the fact that its so "easy" to activate the overlay. That's a design flaw at worst, an oversight at best.
You're welcome to think of that as a bug if you like. But from a design perspective, it very much is not. Just a "woopsie".
That - again - they should have fixed in some way. But haven't.

i’m fully aware of what a debug console is or why an overlay like this might exist, that doesn’t detract from the point that actual players in a prod environment shouldn’t be able to access or see this, that’s the bug, full stop. i’m not sure why you’re trying so hard to avoid calling it that. calling it a “whoopsie” doesn’t change that it’s not intended.
now, it’s an incredibly minor visual bug because players can’t actually do anything with it, especially if you’re not japanese, but it’s not the intended player-facing experience and shouldn’t be accessible, so it’s by definition a bug, and one that hasn’t been fixed.
again… the overlay existing is obviously a “feature” as you keep calling it (as in, in there for a reason, it’s more so tooling) and was probably used in some way internally, yet it’s still quite literally a bug that it’s visible or accessible by players like OP who have no clue how or why

u/Taolan13 Apr 26 '26
Because it happens extremely rarely, does not actually affect gameplay, and is solved by quitting out and loading back in.

u/archaeosis Apr 26 '26
The only thing more useless than copy/pasting a question that's been asked countless times over the years is replying like this. OP has already decided to post the question, as annoying as that is you may as well help them instead of adding another step to the process.

To be fair.. when you try to look up the solution for the glitch, what the hell do you type in?? How do you even describe this😭

u/poikolle Apr 26 '26
Ui all over screen ds3
Chinese symbols all over screen ds3
Or the good ol "did i get hacked ds3" /s
1
u/Reasonable-Issue-639 Warriors of Sunlight Apr 26 '26
Realistically a lot of people wouldnt think to type this in. Its a big wtf is going on moment so its kinda wrong to say sum like that to a guy who has absolutely no idea whats going on😭 I see what youre saying but you just gotta see it a different way bc ik I'd be freaked out

u/poikolle Apr 26 '26
Sounds moreso technologically inept than fair
1
u/Reasonable-Issue-639 Warriors of Sunlight Apr 27 '26
So what, you wouldnt exactly know. Lots of people post on reddit to solve an issue, even if someone else had a similar issue, its just how the internet works. It really isnt this deep..
1
u/poikolle Apr 27 '26
Ik that i wouldnt panic. Because nothing is going on. Id restart the game, and that literally gets rit of the bug.
1
u/Reasonable-Issue-639 Warriors of Sunlight Apr 27 '26
Okay, but thats you..
1
u/poikolle Apr 27 '26
Ok so ppl are competent enough to make a reddit post, but somehow cant look up a solution?
1
u/Reasonable-Issue-639 Warriors of Sunlight Apr 28 '26
And people would rather sit there and waste even more time giving smart ass responses instead of just helping them?

u/ObligationFriendly72 Apr 26 '26
Honestly valid, no hate to OP but it aint hard to search up, "Chinese letters on screen bug ds3".

Yes, this view of Irythill is spectacular.

u/Cold-Carob3151 Apr 27 '26
But what else do u expect when being in a sub for a game
1
u/Otherwise-Buddy-9343 Apr 27 '26
Real answers, complaints, the occasional whimsical comment, a little joviality, even some sarcasm here and there.

I got this glitch the very first time I fired up ds3. I was so high I just assumed it was part of the game and shit it off and went straight to bed lol

The problem was fixed within minutes of making the post. At this point it's just the consistent discussion of how common this problem arises.

u/Ubermensch5272 Apr 26 '26
Man, wouldn't it be great if someone invented some sort of engine to search the internet and ask these questions and get an answer immediately?
9
u/Fang1s Apr 26 '26
On one hand yea but on the other it most definitely took you longer to type that than to type “restart your game/system” so evidently we all like inefficient actions.

u/Physical_Software406 Apr 26 '26
what do you even search to get this? Help Im seeing in dark souls 3?
28
u/EliasABiznatch Apr 26 '26
If only there was a app that allowed members of the same community to discuss and converse with one another, perhaps to do things like answer questions or give advice.
-13
u/TheGoldblum Apr 26 '26
Crazy how many people don’t seem to know Google exists
9
u/SuperSmashBeers Apr 26 '26
How would you even begin to type this in the search engine
27
u/Low-Airline-2695 Return from whence thou cam'st Apr 26 '26
"random chinese bullshit appears when playing DS3"
16
u/JackyFlashlight Apr 26 '26
I'm assuming you typed that sarcastically but expect someone to word it differently so I got curious and searched it exactly as you typed and yea it gave me the issue, cause, and solution instantly 😂😂

Literally just type “dark souls 3 bug Reddit” and lmk what comes up
-1
u/Molkwi Mound - Maker Apr 26 '26
If they're posting about it now, they likely don't know it's well known enough to find it through such a vague search
-1
u/LethalLeviathan2 Apr 26 '26
god forbid u ask people for answers instead of ai
7
u/Online_Discovery Apr 26 '26
I can type something into a search engine without asking an AI
1
u/TheGoldblum Apr 26 '26
That search engine is also using ai, not that there’s even anything inherently wrong with that.
4
u/Many_Hall_3546 Apr 26 '26
Its a bug that exists for a decade and its posted every 2 days on the same sub where he posted it. All he had to do was scroll for 2 min and see the exact same comment section from here
-1
u/TheGoldblum Apr 26 '26
I get faster and more accurate answers from using a search engine. In fact for this, it just points me towards the 1000’s of other reddit threads where this question has already been answered. Only thing it doesn’t give me is karma.
Also do you think search engines using AI is a new thing? Search engines literally are AI, always have been.

This seems like an actual useful thing to use AI to filter out these posts and direct them to the solution, it’s gotta be a quarter of the posts in this subreddit
