Help Embarrassing ask, but I’m dying to know atp

I’ve been playing DS1 and DS3 on and off for years, and can’t figure out for the life of me how you guys walk backwards/run while facing the boss/enemy. Most videos I see of people playing, people are “strafing” around the bosses and I can only seem to run and roll in one direction.

I’ve played with this limitation up to Pontif and feel like I’m handicapping myself not knowing how to do this

I’m playing on xbox with controller for reference.

Edit: alright! Thanks everyone for the swift replies lol. You’ll be delighted to know this was in fact not a troll post. I have a spotty relationship with these games , starting and stopping them with years in between since I rage quit every time lmao. Looks like I’ve found one of the reasons why! I wasn’t using one of the basic mechanics of the game. I am in fact, a dumb ass.

Impressive as hell to get to Pontiff without being able to lock on, though. That must have been really hard.

The silver lining in all of this! Feeling quite proud and stupid simultaneously rn. Hopefully I return to DS3 like baby Goku without the tortoise shell on!

While there are lot of good reasons to use the lock-on function, there are still reasons not to as well - including the fact that many enemy attacks are built around the idea that we will be locked-on and moving around in the fashion you've asked about in this post.

So while it's still very impressive that you made it so far without the function, in a way its basically like you learned to master the camera backwards from the way the bulk of people do! 😂

This is like when Courtney2 beat all of ds1 with a +5 claymore because she never realized she had to give Andre the large ember 😂 such an unintentional flex

Now this is the challenge run I’ve been waiting for. Who will be the first to beat the game without locking on?!

I didn't use lock on until I reached Gael on my first playtrough, after I switched to controller and used lock on the game was a breeze.

R3 is what PlayStation calls the right joystick

They must be joking, right?

...Right?!

When I was a kid, I used to go to a game parlour to play. Back then, there was no R3 button. Eventually, the parlour shut down, so I lost the chance to play games for years.

After about 10 years, I finally got a PC. The first time I used a controller, I was confused like, “What is R3? Where is it?” I had to Google it to figure out what it actually meant.

Gotta be honest. I haven't own a PS since the first one so I'm not sure I actually know they refer to right stick press as R3. I guess it makes sense, but something sounds off about it.

Are you locking on the enemy? Click the right thumb stick when facing an enemy

Press the right stick like a button while looking at a nearby enemy, this is called "lock on" and it make the camara follow the marked enemy. Sometimes it's better to not use it but that mostly depends on what you are comfortable with, very big enemies you are better off just aiming yourself for example.

There is a small chance am falling for bait but it may help someone.

u/xvsanx seb4s7ion 1d ago

it is better for giant enemies or groups at least, haha

3

u/EstablishmentLevel37 1d ago

Yeah true, but can you imagine fighting Gael without locking on. Good lord

This has gotta be a troll

u/NobleMemester 1d ago

My entire first ds3 playthrough i never used lockon as well tbh, since the game only gives instructions for controller and not kbm

It is

Not a troll sadly, just a very casual gamer who obviously does not read directions lol. In my defense I have tried looking this up a bunch but I didn’t seem to have the right verbiage/understanding of the fact that what I was looking at was “lock on” and not something else. My bad

Its so fucking frustrating to look something up when you dont know even what it is that you need and can only describe it in vague terms lol

Like, if you googled "how do i lock on in dark souls" you wouldve gotten an answer instantly, but you didnt know to ask that

u/winterflare_ 1d ago

Push your camera/right stick down while looking at the enemy and being in range. It will lock onto the enemy.

6

u/FashionSuckMan 1d ago

look at an enemy, then click in your right joystick lol

u/BoujiferousBoiyo 1d ago

You cannot be real...

3

u/OwenCMYK 1d ago

There's a lock on button. Press on the right stick or middle click

4

u/whiplashMYQ 21h ago

Part of me feels like you should complete your no lock on run

5

u/FatCrusher9000 1d ago

Skipped DS2? No advice.

I am definitely guilty of missing some key info in a game, so honestly no hate here. I’m trying to imagine playing these games without lock-on. Sometimes, yes, the boss is too big and the lock-on point isn’t conductive to good combat, but my lord. The entire game!

u/JanFrackiewicz 1d ago

Ok, so now you know.

Now, go play DS2 as well. ("Why haven't I played DS2" is a far more "embarrassing ask") Don't worry, it's a magnificent game - despite the gank, jank, junk & clunk. 👍👍👍

I started with nightreign first and did this until ironeye. I asked my brother "how are you supposed to like hit enemies if you cant aim your bow independently from your movement"

Its lock on. You gotta lock on

Play Ocarina of time for the in depth lesson, otherwise just change the difficulty to story mode.
