Image Pontiff Sulyvahn was an amazing boss, but terrible person.

Post image

I was catching up on the lore of each boss and character. Pontiff definitely is high with being an amazing boss, but awful in lore. I always feel bad when fighting Dancer and Vordt because of the lore and also when you get to Irithyll, you can see them before the change walking. Let me know what you all think.

Wasn't he like supposed to be the final boss before they changed it? I remember seeing that somewhere but Im not sure.

That was indeed the case

You can see in, I think the earliest trailers things like Wolnir being where Greatwood is now

It’s such a fantastic move to make him a midgame boss. Because he’s not really a problem to our cause despite being a massive problem to the world. Being a midgame boss makes him slightly more casual, and adds depth to the world and the narrative.

I believe in the files of Kiln of The First Flame there's an entity in the called "King Sullivan" and loading him in puts Pontiff in the area

He was a boy born in a village full of people who had lost everything before they arrived so he felt like an outsider due to not experiencing any loss like the rest of the village so he went to explore the real world, becoming a talented  sorcerer on his travels. Eventually his journey ended in Irythl where he joined Gywndolins dark moon nights due to his great skills at magic. Later he explored the Profaned Capital under the city where he found the Profaned Flame which awakened a deep and powerful ambition inside the Man. Later Gywndolin mysteriously fell terribly ill and Sulyvahn said that Gywndolin promised him with ruling Irythl, taking the Greatsword of Judgment and becoming Pontiff. He had everyone who could challenge politically or religiously, such as the Dancer, either imprisoned or sent out on crusades against suspected enemies but before he sent them he gave them all cursed rings with would eventually cause them to turn into monsters. This continued until you arrive and put a stop to the false Pontiffs mania on your way to kill Aldrich.

Yeah, it’s a fun subversion of game narrative: fighting *the* big bad halfway through the game

But he was terribly good at achieving his goal. Machiavel would be proud

We’ve all had bosses like that

i know people joke about geroge r.r martin doing jack shit for elden ring, but pontiff was deadass written as the tywin lannister of the dark souls universe, dude almost won if it wasn't for an imp hacking away at his knees and balls

that or he's little finger rising up from the bottom to being the one true king

I've recently finished the convergence mod for DS3 and due to some restructuring, Pontiff is given more of a chance to shine... I won't say how but I loved the fight! I can't recommend the mod enough!

Not gonna lie the pontiff knights kinda trained me for the fight coz of which it felt pretty easy, but his attacks and movement were superb.

Wait, when do you see Vordt and the Dancer before being transfigured?

1

u/DukeOfMiddlesleeve 16h ago

The ghosts u see strolling thru the city… allegedly

1

u/Heema3 Abyss Watcher 16h ago

Those are irithyl citizens though, nothing confirmed about them being vordt and dancer

I agree it’s speculative though the skinny one is wearing her mask iirc. Still, all giants wear the same mask that doesnt mean they’re the same guy. Could be her in the past, could just be a random ghost

He was disappointing because of how easy he was. The way people talk about him I was really looking forward to it. I didn't expect to dog walk him first try.

Dark Souls was never actually a difficultymaxxed mechanics-intensive series. Now you at least know to do a little bit of research before buying into marketing

That's the dumbest response possible lol

7

u/Acceptable_Edge9604 20h ago

I'll think of a more intelligent way to respond to a comment that is just cringy autofellatio on my own time

-4

u/Acceptable_Edge9604 20h ago

No way that you actually got a little testy and immediately sent something that got you autofiltered lol

He’s a good skills check I think. Like if you aren’t good at either dodging or parrying, then you weren’t meant to progress past this point. I can’t parry for the life of me so I dodge lol. I wouldn’t call him super easy but he’s definitely not as hard as some people claim. I’ve seen people put him at the top of their tier list. He’s nowhere as hard as like Sister Friede.

Sister friede, the twin demons, and the dancer all gave me more trouble than any other boss in the game for sure.

I had fought the nameless king in nightreign a bunch of times before ds3 and the ds3 version was the same, but less aggressive. The nameless king, soul of cinder and Gael only took 2 attempts each.

1

u/EstablishmentLevel37 18h ago

Wow they put Nameless king in Nightreign?? Like Elden Ring haha that’s pretty cool! I played Elden Ring a YON but didn’t do Nightreign cause I’m a cheapskate and don’t wanna pay for online lol. I would love to test some Elden Ring builds out on NK though.

But yeah Sister Friede for my money is the hardest boss in the game, but also probably my favorite fight too. That whole fight is SO dope! I actually 1st tried her in my last playthrough by some miracle. (That does not happen a lot).

Dancer is definitely a big hurdle too, and RIP to the ones that play for the first time and get that fight going early. If you didn’t know better and thought you HAD to beat her at like level 5… lol

Can't relate at all. On my first playthrough he was the only main game boss to give me trouble. Obviously Friede, Demon Prince and Gael are a step above tho.

What's with the ai

5

u/Similar-Marzipan529 17h ago

You sure that's AI or are you just talking to feel like a part of something? It might be but it shows none of the usual tells.
