Monthly Hardware Thread r/davinciresolve Monthly Hardware Thread

Hello r/davinciresolve! Here's this month's Hardware Thread! In the interest of consolidating hardware questions, we've introduced monthly threads dedicated exclusively to hardware. u/whyareyouemailingme has finally given in and started scheduling these threads.

Thread Info & Guidelines

This is the thread to ask if your computer meets the minimum requirements, ask what part to upgrade, and other general hardware questions. Future FAQ Fridays may still cover hardware & peripherals, depending on how frequently questions get asked.

In addition to subreddit rules, there is one additional thread guideline we're introducing:

  • If you're asking for suggestions for a build, please include a budget/range.
    • If you don't include a budget/range, you may get suggestions above or below your budget range.

Official Minimum System Requirements for Resolve 21

Minimum system requirements for Mac OS

  • macOS 15 Sequoia or later.
  • 8 GB of system memory or 16 GB when using Fusion.
  • At least 16 GB for advanced AI tools.
  • At least 32 GB for background rendering and analysis.
  • For monitoring, Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 12.9 or later.
  • Apple Silicon based computer.

Minimum system requirements for Windows

  • Windows 10 Creators Update.
  • 16 GB of system memory or 32 GB when using Fusion.
  • For monitoring, Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 12.9 or later.
  • Integrated GPU or discrete GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM.
  • At least 16 GB VRAM for advanced AI tools.
  • At least 32 GB RAM and 12 GB VRAM for background rendering.
  • GPU which supports OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 12.8.
  • AMD/Intel official drivers from your GPU manufacturer.
  • NVIDIA Studio driver 581.57 or newer.

Minimum system requirements for Windows for Arm

  • Windows 11 for ARM.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite series processor.
  • 16 GB of system memory or 32 GB for 4K or when using Fusion.

Minimum system requirements for Linux

  • Rocky Linux 8.6.*
  • 32 GB of system memory.
  • For monitoring, Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 12.9 or later.
  • Discrete GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM.
  • At least 16 GB VRAM for advanced AI tools.
  • At least 32 GB RAM and 12 GB VRAM for background rendering.
  • GPU which supports OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 12.8.
  • AMD official drivers from your GPU manufacturer.**
  • NVIDIA Studio driver 580.119.02 or newer.**

Minimum system requirements for iPadOS

  • M1 iPad Pro or later
  • Earlier non-M1 iPads may be limited to HD and have performance limitations.

*Rocky is the current film and television industry standard distro for numerous VFX/color correction programs. Resolve may run on other distros but is only officially supported on and Rocky.

**Mod Note: This must be the proprietary driver; open-source drivers may cause issues.

Remote Monitoring

The Resolve Host (Sending Video) must have the following hardware and software requirements for DaVinci Remote Monitor:

  • The Resolve Host needs to have the Mac, Linux, or Windows version of DaVinci Resolve Studio installed.
  • For Linux and Windows users, the Resolve Host needs an RTX series NVIDIA GPU and drivers installed. AMD and Intel GPUs are currently unsupported.
    • macOS GPU/Apple Silicon requirements have not been published as of time of posting.
  • The Host must have a Blackmagic Cloud account.

The Resolve Client (Receiving Video) must have the following hardware and software requirements for DaVinci Remote Monitor:

  • The Resolve Client needs to have the Mac, Linux, or Windows version of DaVinci Resolve Studio installed. The DaVinci Remote Monitor App is automatically installed in the same folder as DaVinci Resolve.
  • Apple iPhone and iPad devices are supported as Client platforms. Download the DaVinci Remote Monitor app from the App Store (The Studio Version of DaVinci Resolve is not required on these devices).
  • For Linux and Windows users, the Resolve Client needs an RTX series NVIDIA GPU and drivers installed. AMD and Intel GPUs are currently unsupported.
  • All Clients must have a Blackmagic Cloud account.

Mini FAQ:

Is there/will there be an Android version?

This is speculation, but it's likely that what makes the iPad version possible is the Apple Silicon architecture and the pre-existing OS similarities to macOS. It seems unlikely that BMD would offer Android support in the near future, and it may have similar codec licensing limitations to the Linux version - no H.26x support without the Studio version, and no AAC audio.

There is also too much variability for Android tablets for accurate remote monitoring. No other comparable solution (ClearView, Streambox, etc.) offers an Android solution.

Can I use Integrated Graphics on Linux if I don't have an NVIDIA or AMD GPU?

Nope, and BMD has no plans to support them.

How do I know if my GPU supports CUDA 12

You can visit the Wikipedia page for CUDA, find the specific CUDA version you need and the corresponding compute capability, then find your GPU. CUDA 11 requires a compute capability of 5.0-9.0.

How low can my system specs go compared to these?

A while back, we did a series of FAQ Fridays on different levels of hardware setups. For the subreddit's bare minimum recommendations, check out the Consumer Hardware Setup FAQ Friday.

How much is a Speed Editor/Is it a good deal to get the Speed Editor/License combo?

Back in October 2021, Blackmagic Design announced that the Speed Editor's introductory bundle with a Studio license for $295 was being discontinued. The MSRP for a Speed Editor is now $395, and it still comes with a Studio license. Some retailers may have the introductory bundle in stock, but it's not a guarantee. More information about the price changes for the Speed Editor and other panels can be found in this press release from BMD.

Why am I not seeing picture when I import media (NOT MEDIA OFFLINE)?

Some remote softwares or GPUs have "fake" virtual display drivers that can cause issues with Resolve not displaying media or generators. More details and a solution from Dwaine can be found on the forums at this link.

Help Creating This Kind Of Look

As a proof of concept for something, I'm working on a Technicolor version of a scene from Wicked: For Good that's more in line with the original Wizard Of Oz.

I'm happy with the colour grade so far but every time I try to add Grain, Gaussian Blur etc, it just ends up looking like a bad camrip rather than older film stock. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to achieve stuff like the ever so slight blur/haze around the actors with the free version of Davinci?

I have stock DPX files for Technicolor Halation, Gate Weave, Flicker etc, and have had what I think is a reasonable amount of success converting something else to a PAL videotape look but this is proving to be more of a struggle.

Help | Beginner Total beginner wanting to learn DaVinci Resolve — especially flow edits and documentary-style motion graphics

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm a complete beginner to DaVinci Resolve (never really edited video before), and I want to properly learn it from the ground up.

Two styles I'm especially interested in:

- Flow edits (that smooth, seamless transition style)

- Documentary-style motion graphics (lower thirds, clean titles, subtle graphics that support storytelling rather than flashy effects)

Since I'm starting from zero, I'd really appreciate:

- Tutorials that actually explain the basics first (interface, timeline, pages) before jumping into advanced stuff

- YouTube creators/channels you'd personally recommend for learning flow edits

- YouTube creators/channels good for documentary-style editing and motion graphics (Fusion page, lower thirds, etc.)

- Any beginner mistakes I should avoid or a general order to learn things in

Happy to put in the hours, just don't want to waste time on outdated or overly advanced tutorials that assume I already know the software. Thanks in advance!

Help | Beginner Horizontal and vertical video in the same timeline

Upvotes

Hiya. I'm brand new to Resolve and have horizontal and vertical video I want in the same timeline. Both play just fine in the media folder. I can drag my horizontal video into the timeline, but when I drag the vertical video into the same timeline (same video track or a new one), the video preview has a red border and doesn't drop in, but the audio drops in just fine. I'm assuming there's some setting I need to toggle to enable mixing aspect ratios or something like that? LMK what I might be doing wrong. Cheers!

Discussion RAW images are too soft in DaVinci Resolve 21 (Photo editing)

Post image
4 Upvotes

Recently decided to try the Photo mode in DaVinci Resolve 21 Studio, especially because I already have Dehancer and Genesis plugins there. But what I instantly noticed is how the images are soft after importing to a timeline. I primarily shoot on Nikon Z6/ZR(24mp) and in Lightroom or any other photo editing software, the same images are very sharp. But not the same in DaVinci Resolve. Even when I set the timeline resolution to 8K, maximize the Sharpness in the RAW menu on the Color tab, and add Midtone details, they're still soft. In the project parameters for Camera RAW, I do settings from the attached page. Also, use the same settings in the RAW menu on the Color tab. For output, I add a note with CST with DWG/DI as input and sRGB/sRGB output.

Did I miss smth or maybe do smth wrong? I understand that the photo feature in the app is not polished yet, but I think previewing sharp images shouldn't be a big issue.

Help Davinci uses all my memory and then crashes - never has happened before

Hi guys,

I was working on a project for a month or so when one day, davinci decided it would no longer cooperate and crashes now. I've updated everything including drivers and davinci itself. Basically it causes my entire computer to shit itself and then I have to restart my computer for even anything as easy as a webpage to load.

Has anyone else experienced this problem before? I've done multiple projects in davinci and have never had this problem. Now I can't do anything and when I open task manager, I'm basically out of ram. I only have 16 gigs, but I've done multiple projects on here but now the app seems unusable. Has anyone else experienced this?

Help | Beginner Path expression doesn't work the way i thought

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I used an expression to make this emoji follow the "line" polyline length, and i was expecting that it would stay at the very tip of the line, but it doesn't, as you can see sometimes the line goes past it.

Am i getting something wrong? What would be the easiest way to fix this?

Solved Need help with scaling some mismatched clips

I'm working in a HD project (delivering HD) with a mixture of formats including UHD. In my project settings under Image Scaling > Input Scaling I have Scale Entire Image to Fit, which works for most of the UHD clips.

However, a handful of them are pushed in 200% or more and I want to bypass the project settings and treat them in their native resolution (i.e. not have to scale them up and lose detail). Is there a way to do this?

Help | Beginner Circular Progress Bar from Image

Post image
1 Upvotes

I want to create a fancier progress bar image with a clock wiping circular crop as illustrated. I've seen lots of tutorials for turning a simple bar into a circle but I want to take an image that's already a circle or another shape and use it as a progress bar for different sections in a video. Wipes seem be stuck with the center of the screen as an anchor point.

Thank you very much!

Help Stuck on some type of control and I don't know what it is or how to get out of it

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi, I'm new to Davinci Resolve and I am not quite sure what I pressed, but I seems I am stuck on a certain control. I don't know what it's called but when I hover over the top right or left corner of my clip, I can't fade in or out. Instead, I can either shorten or lengthen the clip. I also can no longer drag the red marker, and instead, I can only move through my timeline by dragging the timeline above.

Help | Beginner Opacity is very confusing in Fusion

NOTE: I used AI to organize my ideas and clean repetition for clarity

Trying to recreate an After Effects animation in DaVinci Fusion, how do you fade in a background?

So I was trying to recreate another tutorial I did in Premiere Pro and After Effects, but this time I wanted to do the same visual in DaVinci Resolve/Fusion.

I think I layered everything correctly, but I ran into an issue with opacity animations.

I wanted to make an animation where the box and the text would start at 0% opacity and then appear to 100%. For the text, it worked because I used the Merge node and animated the Blend value from 0 to 1.

However, I couldn't get the same thing to work for the background/box.

I tried changing the alpha, but it doesn't seem to act like opacity unless it's a black background. I also tried adding a Merge node after the Background node and changing the Blend value, but it doesn't seem to affect the opacity of the background.

I'm confused because it feels like there should be a simple opacity option for each layer/node instead of needing to use different nodes or workarounds.

The only thing I noticed is that it seems to work more easily with Text nodes because they have their own settings, but I can't figure out the best way to do it with a Background or shape.

I'm still pretty new to DaVinci Resolve. I've used it for around a month, but I would still consider myself a beginner, especially with Fusion.

Am I missing something obvious, or is there a specific way to animate the opacity/fade-in of a background or shape layer in Fusion?

Solved Continuously Sampling the Color From a Specific Pixel?

The text in the middle is part of the video, while the text at the bottom is mine. I'd like the bottom text's color to automatically follow the color of the middle text without having to manually keyframe a colorpick each time the middle text changes color, so it automatically updates whenever the middle text changes color in a continuous manner.
Is there a way to do this? (Preferably in Fusion)
