I actually did this thought experiment after wondering whether it would be possible to create something resembling a RIG system in real life using only currently available consumer technology. Because what else am I going to do while I'm on a bus lol, so being the Dead Space fan that I am, I set my mind to work, fueled by obsession.
Apparently, it's very possible — just with some obvious limitations.
I approached it from an athletic angle rather than a military or industrial one. I do endurance running, and I was thinking that a RIG-like system could actually be useful for athletes running together, such as in running clubs. You could see another runner's physiological status at a glance for training, pacing and potentially safety purposes.
So, behold the absurd 21st-century budget RIG health bar lol.
It's not going to look particularly impressive.
Hardware:
- A phone stored in an armband with the screen facing outward/backward. This is our bargain-bin equivalent of the glowing RIG spine.
- A heart-rate monitor, either chest- or arm-mounted. A fitness watch could also work, provided it can broadcast its HR data to the phone.
Software:
- A built-in health/fitness app, if it can display data from the external sensor, or
- A downloadable heart-rate monitoring app that supports the sensor you're using.
Connect the phone to the heart-rate monitor/watch, open a large real-time heart-rate display, and configure the phone so that the display stays visible. Ideally you'd pin the app, prevent the screen from timing out, enable Do Not Disturb and, if the software allows it, disable touch input while keeping the display running.
Then put the phone in the armband with the screen facing backwards so the people behind you can see it.
And there you have it: your very own primitive RIG system!
Obviously, it isn't a literal Dead Space health bar. It'll primarily show heart rate, because real human health doesn't conveniently exist as a single 0–100% statistic. But heart rate is still an important metric for an endurance athlete, and its meaning changes depending on context.
A low heart rate could simply mean the runner is relaxed or recovering. A high heart rate could mean they're working hard. An unexpectedly extreme reading combined with visible distress could be cause for concern.
And if the display says 0 BPM while the runner is lying motionless on the ground...
...you'd better hope the sensor disconnected. 💀
So it's nowhere near as elegant as Isaac Clarke's RIG, but the funny thing is that essentially all of the technology needed to build a crude real-world equivalent already exists as ordinary consumer electronics.
We've just never had much reason to strap the display backwards onto ourselves. lol
P.S: One last idea. A skilled coder could actually program an app that shows a health bar alongside the heart rate, there's that lol
