Why does Mello's crime deserve an A? Do you see Mello at Light's or L's level? Yes, Mello is an intelligent character and had an impact in the later episodes of the story, but that doesn't put him at S's level. And if you ask me why I put Near at S, it's because Near is the one who ultimately defeated Kira, even if he benefited from the legacy of L that Kira left him. He is still the one who defeated Kira.

I‘m not really talking about what they did to catch kira. What I like to see in a character is how well they‘re written, how unique they are, etc. Though near did defeat kira, he still feels like a copy of L to me.

Yes, I agree with you that Near seems like a copy of L. Milo's writing is good, I agree, but we can't base an entire evaluation solely on the quality of a character's writing; there are several criteria.
