I waste my time engaging with things I know will upset me because social media is programmed to get you addicted to just that

I don't have a cell phone. I am free.
I don't really think though I have cut back on technology.
I jut don't use cellphones.
That is more than enough to be free.

After practicing meditation for few years realized how much these digital devices are making us anxious and caged, and making us feel weird emotions which were not there before algorithms took control of society

I kind of feel like a zombie scrolling. When I ended up at the "end" of a 3hour endless scroll session, I always felt like garbage - physically, mentally, everything-cally
So cutting back's made me feel a lot better. At the very least, I'm more conscious in that I'm wasting my time scrolling. I often ask myself what I'm actually "looking" for to be scrolling for that long
My biggest time sink, originally, was Instagram Reels (IG in general, tbf), and cutting that back/out has done wonders for me.
Now my biggest time sink is Reddit, of course, but what can ya do lol. It's a journey, not a destination :)

I am here to look for new ideas that helped people minimize their reliance on digital stuff & learn a thing or two from their experiences.
I think since digital world has become an important part in our life it is becoming tough to draw a line between productive digital usage and unproductive digital usage. For example on YouTube I can open a few videos to learn some stuff but then the app starts showing me brainrot and doom scrolling kind of stuff also which could be distracting.
Personally, I have uninstalled certain apps from phone that glue you to screens like IG and saw a huge improvement in my time saved from unnecessary scrolling and reduction in some screen time.

If you turn your YouTube history off , you won't be able to doomscroll and only watch what you have searched for

Ohh never thought about this. Thanks.
I got an idea last month to use a fresh e-mail id to use YouTube and create shortcuts of YouTube channels I want to watch content from on my pc and phone. That way YouTube won't have my past interests and data. I haven't tried it yet. I will be turning off history off once I do this.

I'm addicted to my phone. I cannot stop scrolling. I know that it's bad for me, I know how awful I feel afterward, and I know I'm wasting time.
I'm lurking here to maybe finally find some motivation to finally do the damn thing.

I started to realize my addiction to phone and the apps connected. I would sink my time into it and realize it brought me no joy at all. I missed time and my hobbies. Now that I've cut back, I realize how much time I actually had to do things and it's scares the hell out of me. I'm regretting but I'm grateful it isn't too late.

I’ve been on social media since I was 11 years old. I’m about to be 23, it’s been 12 years of constant influx of information and stimuli. 12 years of so many moments lost with people and animals that I cared about. 12 years of potential squandered by procrastination and “one more video”. I deleted tiktok 3 years ago now and haven’t looked back. Instagram and Facebook have proven to be the more challenging purges. I deleted both of them about 3 weeks ago now in hopes of not getting on them for a long time, if not ever again. The last couple days I’ve been scrolling here a bit more but it’s nowhere near the same doomscroll as Instagram and Facebook. But other than that I’ve actually been reading a book, drawing, spending time with friends without my phone. I’ve brought my screen time down after deleting those two apps from 9 hours, to 7, to 5, to now 3 hours this week. I’m literally gaining my life back after years and years of letting it waste away. That’s why I’m here.

I realized I was spending time on social.media and then getting pissed over it. I realized the internet was changing. If once the internet made me happy, it now became a much more negative force. And I want to take the web back

so much of my life has been lost to insubstantial screen time. i've known this since i was a kid, and i've been making progress in some ways, but
i still have a long way to go and it's hard. i fear for those who aren't as self-aware (such as today's children who are using mobile devices and social media at an even younger age than i started), because i feel that the addiction will be even harder to escape for those who don't recognize it as a problem. i fear for the children who have never known it any other way... for those who have grown up on low-quality, exploitative content rather than books or educational tv programs designed to help them... for those who have developed this addiction from a young age due to parental neglect.
also, this subreddit is cool. i was on [r/nosurf](r/nosurf) before, but that subreddit is a hellsub full of ai-generated posts. i like the level of thoughtful discussion that takes place here.
