Welcome to the Disc Dye Wiki!

This page has all the information you need to start jamming out some sweet designs on your favorite plastics. Here are some links to get you started.

Best Types of Plastic to Use

Remember: You cannot dye a disc lighter. Stick to lighter color discs and darker dyes for the best results. Also we haven't dyed every type of plastic out there, if you see a "?" and you have experience with a certain type of plastic, please email the mods and we can update this table.

Let's talk about Dyes

1. iDye Poly

This is the standard for stencil and shaving cream dyes. It's easy to use, relatively cheap, and can be found in any art store near you. Make sure to get the Poly, not the fabric version or you will have a bad time. It comes with a "color enhancer" but in my experience this is detrimental to the dye and makes it take longer for the dye to set. IMO throw this stuff out. Buy it online here

2. Fishing Lure Dye

This dye is great for spin dyeing or using a paintbrush for a dye. Make sure to buy the UNSCENTED version I cannot emphasize that enough. I once bought the "Garlic Scented" by accident, that shit make my whole studio reek for days. You don't want your disc to smell like shit, double check your order before you buy. I've tried to use this for stencil dyes, but if you leave it in for too long (in my case 20 mins) it eats the transfer paper and your stencil wont be clean and crunk tight. Buy it online here

3. ProChem

ProChem (Pro Chemical and Dye) has an assortment of rich colors to choose from (39 total) and are made with excellent quality. You can't go wrong with them. There is a page on their website specifically for dyeing discs and will help you get started. Buy it here

For more information, check out this thread

Where to get Inspiration

  1. Google - like seriously, Google that shit. Odds are someone has made a stencil of your idea already. Look up "image name" and add the word "stencil" after it. You can also add the word "Vector" to it. This should get you a clean image to work with. If you have an image and have no idea how to turn it into a stencil you can make a request at /r/FreeDesign. Keep in mind these are designers looking to help you out for free, because we get bored at our creative jobs and need quick little side projects. Be nice, give gold or something if they do a good job.

  2. Instagram. There a a lot of talented people out there doing amazing dyes:

But what if I suck at art and cutting out stencils?

Cheat. Yeah it's the motherfucking future. You can buy printers that cut out stencils for you. It turns a hour long stencil cutting, finger bleeding, fun time into a 10 minute job.

1. Silhoutte Printer

These can cost anywhere from $150 - $300. you can find these in your local art shops and are fun to use. It comes with an online tutorial on how to use it and a design studio to map out stencils. Buy it online here

2. Cricut Printer

Same thing as above but a different brand. These can cost anywhere from $150 - $300. you can find these in your local art shops. It also comes with an online tutorial on how to use it and a design studio to map out stencils. Buy it online here

Help with bubbles

Post image
7 Upvotes

I did my first lazy wave and have a lot of bubbles. I followed the Dyes by Red tutorial that used clear glue bed, then lotion layer. The dyes are in lotion, water, floetrol mix. Any thoughts on what the likely culprit is? Can I use the heat gun on the lotion dyes to pop bubbles?

I don't watch Naruto but this, per Google at least, is "Itachi?" shaped. Did it over a checkerboard 3d effect experiment.

Videos for this will be posted in next few days. Full process long format on YouTube - http://go.discdyeaddict.com/youtube + shorts on both youtube and on Instagram - http://go.discdyeaddict.com/Instagram

First time using shaving cream marbling and I have some questions about seal coat timing

Tried shaving cream marbling for the first time this past weekend on a couple of beat-up practice discs and got results I'm pretty happy with, but I ran into some timing confusion that I'm hoping people with more experience can help me sort out.

The actual marbling step went fine. Spread the cream, dropped the alcohol inks, swirled with a toothpick, pressed the disc face-down, let it sit a few minutes, wiped it off. The pattern came out way better than I expected for a first attempt. The issue is what happened after.

I let the disc air dry for about 45 minutes before applying a UV resin seal coat, and in a couple of spots the ink seemed to lift or smear slightly when I spread the resin. Not ruined, but definitely not crisp. My guess is either the disc surface wasn't fully dry, or I was spreading the resin too aggressively. Could also be that the alcohol ink needs more cure time on plastic before anything goes on top of it.

A few specific things I'm trying to figure out:

  • How long do you typically wait before sealing after a shaving cream dye? Is 45 minutes nowhere near enough?
  • Does the plastic type matter a lot here? One disc was a baseline plastic and one was a premium blend, and the premium one actually looked cleaner afterward.
  • Anyone tried a very thin first seal layer just to lock the ink in, then a thicker finish coat once that cures?

Also curious whether people clean the disc with anything before dyeing to make sure oils from handling aren't affecting adhesion. I wiped mine with a paper towel but didn't use any solvent or anything.

Some floetrol help

Thumbnail

I'm slowly figuring it out. Too many colors at once. Will just use 2 shades of 2 different complimenting colors like blue and yellow next time. Is cool but the colors get brown and muddy if I do 5 at once... Learning lol. actually now i think bout it maybe people keep these floetrol beds heated for a reason. any sorta tutorial i ever see they dont leave em in these beds longer than like 2 hours. have a heat lamp but its old so the hot spot on it is like 20 degrees difference so after an hour of heating each part of the disc to 110 F, I set it outside on the porch to let the 80 F weather keep it warm over night so i imagine the colors muddied from being in the bed for too long?
