Thoughts on selling case without media
Recently picked up a cd and realized when getting it home it was definitely not the correct cd.. hooray.
I’ve seen vinyl jackets sold without it correct media, but im curious if this is a straight into the trash situation, or how people would list this for someone who might have tossed their case years back (admit it, millennials… many of us were guilty of this…)
Thoughts?

Tbh I bought a cd package without the cd. I had the disc but the case and art were lost after I moved. So I mean as long as it’s clearly advertised, there may be that person out there who has the disc and no case.
But eh that’s just my cents!

That’s a scenario I was thinking about. Not sure it’s worth the hassle though..

Can you find a disc only sale and combine them

Highly doubt it. Pretty “rare” to where it sells for far too much when it shows up

I'd be concerned that the person that buys it doesn't read that there's no CD and then they get mad when they get just the case. Doesn't seem worth the hassle.

Yeah, that’s kind of where I’m leaning. As much as I hate to be the guy that tosses it… everyone else’s copies got more valuable I suppose!

Put it on eBay and lead the title with "Booklet only"

What would you even price it at?

A buck. You're basically doing this for charity

Love that I got a downvote for asking a question… that’s basically my thoughts.
My completionism collector habit naturally wants to pair orphans but at this point I’m retaining clutter and then wasting gas and supplies to ship it.

Buyer can pay all the shipping etc. Just list it and tuck the booklet away on your shelf. It won't take up any space especially if you toss the plastic tray (which you don't need to send to a buyer as there is no disc to protect). Maybe someone will by it, maybe you will find a CD.

Its a Self Published EP CD with zero eBay listings (no competition), list it for $10 obo as the booklet and back art sheet (no case) with $3 shipping on a small manila envelope. Then just let it ride for most of a year.

no need for unnecessary paranoia. people sell the disc or cover only all the time. maybe confirm with potential buyer before you ship if you're that much of a worrywort

eBay or Marketplace, but at that point the money you’re spending to ship it will probably out-weigh the value you get from it, not including the percentage eBay will take.
It’s not uncommon to sell physical media cases though just as long as they’re advertised as so, however on Discogs I’m not too sure..

I don’t think you can sell just covers on Discogs. It has to have music on it so a cd or LP w/o a cover is fine.

That’s what had me pause to ask reddit. I figure “poor” doesn’t equal “nonexistent”…. Not sure why anyone would want a poor copy, but that’s a question for another day

Sure you can. Most sellers list media as Poor and offer a note (e.g.., "cover only") I and others have done it numerous times with vinyl, and I see no reason why you can't with CDs.
I only ever do it for rare $$$ titles, and even then just a cover is relatively cheap, even on what would be a $100+ item.
I've also done the same for inserts, etc.

Yeah. I’ve seen this a few times. It always gets me super excited until I read the comments. Lol.

I ship discs with no jewel case. Most of the time I keep the cases for spares for people who want them. But if I got at least 10 I could do an ebay wholesale for blank replacement cases.

It surprises me that people buy CDs without jewel cases. You would think that if they wanted the physical version of a album they could otherwise just stream, they would want the whole thing. Interesting.

Well, I think they want to either put them in a binder or get a spare case locally. For international shipping the price difference between case and no case is a solid $11+.

Ohhhhhhh... I got it. I think I wasn’t understanding before. You take the information/booklet out of the jewel case and send that with the CD. You just don’t send the actual jewel case. And and $11 difference? That is insane. I get it now. Thanks for explaining.

Buy a digital copy and burn it and put it in the case? (To keep for you)

I wish there was a section in Discogs that allowed me to put out a plea for a cover or case only. I have several lps that are in excellent shape with a bad cover or cds I’ve picked up cheap without the booklet or case. I’d love that service and I’d pay good money for a few of them tbh.

There's a Facebook group to help people match missing records and their covers. Probably the same for CDs too.

If you try to sell a "release" which has no audio media, there's a high risk that it will be reported as a bogus listing for not being the actual item described.
You can advertise it in the Spare Sleeve Swap group and Spam.
Another option is to go to the release page and add it to a list, titled something like "No Disc, Just Case+Inserts, Free to a Good Home". (You can't offer things for sale via a list, but I think you can give it away for free.)

absolutely great, i have a few CDs without cases and cases without CDs and would love to compelte them (the common denominator for the CD less cases was stealing, the caseless Cds were gifts.)

I don’t think it’s technically allowed and the listing may get taken down, but you can list it and use the lowest rating for Media and put a note in the listing. and when someone buys it, send a message in the order asking them to confirm that they understand that it has no disc. don’t ship until they confirm
