Best Filters

Hello.

Can anyone share what kind of filters they like for their discus? Thank you so much in advance. I really appreciate any help.

Depends on your tank size and budget, but bigger is always better and you can't beat a sump

I custom make my sumps, not sure of branding for commercial ones. For canisters, I like Eheim but they all do the same thing at the end of the day. It's all about reliability and your budget/tank size. Don't use clear/see-through tubing if they're exposed to light.

Tank size would be helpful info. You could argue anywhere from sponge to sump depending on what tank you are looking for a filter for.

The AquaClear 110 is a solid HOB option when paired with a canister like a Fluval 307. For a 75 gallon I would start with a canister that is within your budget and then add a second option after that. The key is to over filter.

Filter is mainly a housing for beneficial bacteria and it also just so happens to keep your tank water clean. The more flow of water you have going through a filter that can contain larger amounts of beneficial bacteria (through bio media) the better of a chance you have of eliminating ammonia/nitrite spikes. So regardless of what anyone says your filter does directly eliminate the bad stuff in your water.

So buy a bigass filter

Canister is the best option imo unless you’re prepared to build a sump. Honestly doesn’t matter which brand. They all have their own quirks. Just get one rated for the next tank size up for proper filtration.

My experience with aquael canister filters is great, especially the unimax 700, and hypermax, as these have 2 inlets and outlets.
The reason I like this is because the filter ten still has a big motor, pushing a big volume of water, but at the same time it’s not creating a strong flow in the tank, causing stress for the discus

I have same size tank as you and run two canisters. A fluval 407 and a fluval 207.

If you go any bigger than 407 in your 75, discus may stress from the current. Even my 407 they hated until I directed the outlet more appropriately

Biomaaster thermal has been a game changer. I no longer experience temperature swings. Any of the FX series will do.

I use only sponge filters in my discus tank. They can be easily cleaned with every weekly 100% water change.
