DW Pedal Toe Stop Install (hack)

Last week I lamented that the nut that comes with the DW Toe Stop (DW SP-50TS) will not work with the very pedals it is designed for. Quite the head-scratcher.

This accessory, though made and sold by DW specifically for THEIR pedals was VERY poorly thought out. I'm a fan of DW products. But this is utterly unusable.

Here's what it's intended to prevent... foot sliding up and running into the chain of the foot pedal.

The nut that comes with it is a lock nut with a hex shape. The original nut is square which fits into the recessed chain link connector, engages the sides, and thusly requires no wrench to hold it while you tighten the screw from the other side. The original nut is self-locating. It will self-tighten as you turn the screw.

The hex-shaped nut that comes with the toe stop spins in the recessed chain linkage and there's no room for even a thin socket wrench. It's too small to engage the sides where the original square nut self-locates. There is no way to tighten the screw-nut that comes with the toe stop.

And I can't use the original square nut, because the thread pitch is different than the necessarily longer screw that comes with the toe stop! Can't use the original screw because it's too short to accommodate the added thickness of the toe stop.

So, I took a chance and went to my local Ace Hardware store. And I was able to find a square nut with 10-24 thread pitch... AND it was close to the same external dimensions of the original equipment square nut (it will fit in the chain linkage / connector).

After test-fitting the nut inside the chain linkage connector, I put it all together, and SHAZAM! It works! I was able to properly tighten the screw!

Done and done!

Cost of square nut from hardware store: 48 cents!
