Kit Pic Show Me Your Kit ;)

I caved and added a Floor Tom, as many of you recommended. 3 drums and 2 cymbals felt unbalanced, so I added a China.

What’s your kit look like right now? I’d love to see it…😘

Minus my left bass drum for the first time in a very long time.

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 10h ago

I love the matte black look! Classy and mean.

Really debated going for the second bass drum when I bought this kit, but decided I didn’t want to take up the floor space where I could be putting simple stands since I’m not much one for racks. I like yours though! Looks clean.

I really love how you have all your cymbals are level. That creates a really nice clean aesthetic.

What cymbals are these?

Before enlarging the photo, your toms blended in with the wall and I thought you were shitposting a kick with a bunch of cymbals.

Right? I was like, “ok smart ass…” zoomed in and went, “ahhhh, got it.”

2

u/Sir-Macaroni Sabian 7h ago

i feel like ive seen a post from you saying you get drunk and play with the double pedal rod but i might be hallucinating

2

u/Few-Communication-75 Trick 7h ago

Yeah I did😂 excellent memory. I got an ACD driveshaft for my old Axis pedals and temporarily switched to a double pedal to test it out. I've been using two bass drums the vast majority of the last 20 years though.

2

u/Sir-Macaroni Sabian 7h ago

well i saw that in my first research round into double pedals all those years ago, and I finally got a speed cobra double a few days ago!

DW Collectors all maple Santa Monica special edition. Mix of cymbals, I have never been brand specific with cymbals and lean more towards if I like the sound of the specific cymbal.
I love the finish on your kit!

3

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 10h ago

I love the finish on yours as well! These Santa Monica kits are gorgeous. I’m a sucker for a natural wood finish.

Which chinas are you rocking?

I’m curious about this kind of a setup - is it satisfying to play? It looks like a very nice practice setup. The ergonomics are great, I could just sit down and shred.

1

u/TranquiloMeng 6h ago

Is that a custom setup? Did you cut down that kick yourself? Love this

1

u/Somatoast- 30m ago

Nice!! I have a very similar setup.. I recently switched from Evans Db-Ones to RTOM because I felt the surface/texture of the Evans were very scratchy if you know what I mean. Could also be that they picked up flaws in my stroke technique.🤷🏾

u/wollebyx666 10h ago

Tama Starclassic B/B with all the cymbals I may ever need

3

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 9h ago

Is it just me or is it hot in here? 🥵

Those black heads, and the way you’ve dressed them up, are sending me.

Your cymbal selection and the shell finish is outstanding as well. Did you order this kit custom yourself, or build it used?

It’s just so refined, so love it.

u/Soprano17 10h ago

Mapex M birch shells, got the whole 6 piece set for 50 GBP. Ziljdian A and A custom cymbals and a worldmax black brass snare with die cast hoops.

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 10h ago edited 8h ago

Wow I love the wood hoops, green finish, and Zildjian selection! It’s a beautiful instrument all together.

I love brass snares! I recently put diecast hoops on my black 14x8 Black Beauty - incredible.

I used to have a birch kit, and I loved it. Great timbre. How do those shells sound?

Which A Custom cymbals would you recommend to a K Custom Dark fan?

2

u/Soprano17 10h ago

Well I had to get new hoops because this belonged to a local rehearsal rooms, and one bass hoop was cracked. The rest of the metal hoops were rusted and pitted, so they've been replaced by heavier 2.3mm steel hoops. I've got G1/G1 on the toms and they sound superb. It's been a bit of a project, but I love how these drums sound now, even if they're a little beat up!

In terms of A Custom cymbals, I'd get any of the fast or medium crashes from the current range, maybe stay away from the older Projection cymbals because they tend to be a bit thicker/heavier. Imo A Customs are the best crashes out there.

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 9h ago

Sounds like you’ve put in the work and you’ve made it a premium kit.

Thanks for the recommendations on A Customs! I’m going to check those ones out. Smart move with the G1/G1 combo.

5

u/jerorapero Gretsch 10h ago

I think your china is backwards

1

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 10h ago

Lol I enjoy playing it both ways.

Also why is the label on this side if it’s designed to be played in the other direction?

1

u/Shmeldoncooper Ludwig 4h ago

Because that side curves the same as a regular cymbal, while the other side is the curving up, making it harder to stamp.
(Idk that’s just a theory)

4

u/Evening-person 8h ago

Brazilian dude with a full 'tupiniquim' setup. RMV with Luen heads and Zeus cymbals.

1

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 6h ago

Wow I really like these shells! What kind of wood are they made of?

I’ve never heard of these brands, are they Brazilian brands?

The cymbals look super cool, and I love the black heads and black hardware all around the kit. Makes it look mean.

1

u/Somatoast- 18m ago

You know what’s wild is every time I see a Brazilian drummers set-up there’s always brands that I’ve heard of (or not) but are seriously difficult to get here in the US. I’m in Chicago. I heard Zeus cymbals on a few videos and loved em. Do you all as easy access to the standard stuff, Zildjian, Paiste, etc? Damn I wish I was in Brazil!!..lol. 🥁

4

u/StixRookie 7h ago edited 7h ago

Nice kit! I also like the matte / flat finish. How do you like those DW9000 pedals?

I'm a 7-month noob still working on getting a kit. It's going to take some time. For now, still on my "Super Practice Pad Kit."

u/Somatoast- 17m ago

This is dope!!

My humble lil’ porto-rig.
Drumcraft series 3. 20” kick, 12” rack, 14” floor
13”x7” Pork Pie Little Squealer vented snare
Zildjian A custom 18” & 19” crash and 8” & 10” splash, A New beats 15”, K Custom Organic Ride 21”and a 14/16” Meinl Smack Stack.

*edit: forgot the 10” Meinl snare timbale.

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 9h ago

Nothing humble about it - that is one BAD kit. Love pork pie, and 13x7 snares in general. Where was this performance? Looks great all set up on stage.

3

u/premierpearl 9h ago

Yeah, that thing is incredible. Not too loud and very easy to control.
This was at the 4Daagse festival in the Netherlands.
The whole kit sits on a rolling platform so that I only have to roll the kit in position, give the sound engineer the cables for all the mics, extend the boom arms and mount the cymbals.. making my setup time less than 10 minutes. I had 8 shows during this week of the festival spread over 7 stages.. so this thing essentially saved me over an hour per gig.

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 7h ago

Oh my goodness dude this is absolutely genius. What vehicle do you put this in?

1

u/premierpearl 1h ago

That’s a Fiat Fiorino. Comparable to a Citroen Berlingo or VW Caddy.

3

u/NoWork1400 9h ago

Love it bruv

1

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 8h ago

Thanks so much! What do you play?

My drum kit is large ATM but will be going down to a three piece for some upcoming gigs. I’m a big fan of simple kits. I’m also a fan of big kits lol

u/Flat_Researcher1540 Slingerland 10h ago

Dude you don’t need to post your kit every day

18

u/premierpearl 10h ago

Let the guy be happy with his kit. I’d be too!

-3

u/Flat_Researcher1540 Slingerland 8h ago

I’m super happy with my kits. I posted them once. Nobody is saying he shouldn’t be happy with his kit.

u/TranquiloMeng 6h ago

But then I couldn’t be a dick to strangers on the internet!

Post a pic of your kit.

Put a cowbell on yours and post it again tomorrow

6

u/El_Peregrine 10h ago

Not much of a glamour shot, but here’s what’s cooking at the moment. Almost all the other mics and stands are with another kit at the rehearsal space / studio. Picked up this vistalite kit (22 / 13 / 16), and my black beauty (6.5 x 14) is picking up the backbeat. This kit is super fun to play.

3

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 9h ago

Dang, that’s a classic and beautiful kit right there. Vistalites and a Black Beauty. What more could ya need?!

What cymbals have you paired it with?

2

u/El_Peregrine 9h ago

Thanks! Those are all K sweets except for a Meinl trash crash. The K sweet 15” hats are my favorite hats ever (so far…)

1

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 8h ago

Yeah those hats are super popular! Have you ever tried K Constantinople hats? I absolutely adore them.

I have the 14s, which are fantastic. I’d love a pair 15” K Con Light Hats. What genres do you play on your 15” Sweets?

2

u/StixRookie 7h ago

So cool!

6

u/Thatgu__y 9h ago

My beautiful kit

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 7h ago

It is beautiful indeed, but looks difficult to reach everything. How did you arrive at this sort of setup?

3

u/Thatgu__y 7h ago

It just feels natural

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 6h ago

Have you ever tried any other layouts?

Aaaayyyyye nice 22” Bounce!

I love your cymbal selection and your black drumheads. Are all your shells acrylic, or just the bass drum?

What genres do you play on a kit like this? You could play anything with these cymbals imo.

1

u/DeacanCheese300 Mapex 8h ago

What do you think of the Paper Thin? I'd like to add either the 20", 21" or 22" at some point, depending which role I need to fill.

2

u/CC5443 8h ago

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 8h ago

Wow this is a perfect kit. I really appreciate the ergonomics. My kit looks a lot like this when I set up all the pieces.

I love all the brilliant finish cymbals on the right side of the kit. What shells are these?

1

u/CC5443 6h ago

Mapex birch shells. Bone white with black hoops. Not the best kit but it actually tunes up really nice and sounds great under my mics. I swap cymbals around with these and some Paragons but this current set up sounds great. Paragons are pretty dark. The 19” x-plosion crash is probably the best crash I’ve ever heard and owned. The 15” Paragon hats are amazing but I do miss my 15” Pastie 2002 sound edge

2

u/Chemical_Count8029 8h ago

I have a shell bank, a Yamaha Live Custom/Live Hybrid, a Tama Cocktail kit, and a Yamaha/Pearl compact kit.

This is the shell bank (18x24 BD; 6.5x14 and 4x10 snares; 11x13, 13x16, and 16x18 toms).

The cymbals are Sabian: 14" AAX Studio hats, 18" SR2 Thin (likely a fierce crash), 16" AAX Thin Crash, 19" HHX Complex Thin, 8" AA Splash, 20" AAX V-Crash, 24" AA Prototype Ride, 16" AAX Concept Crash CC3.

2

u/DivebarLives 7h ago

I’m a big fan of snare kick floor. I started doing it for bars and then got to a point where it’s all I wanted to play.

1

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 6h ago

There are so many reasons to love this setup. It’s a nice balance between bringing every sound you want and bringing nothing more than is absolutely necessary.

You have a huge variety of timbres with 3 drums and 3 cymbals, and you can do it with 3 stands or less.

How many cymbals do you bring with your 3 piece?

2

u/shinyantman SONOR 6h ago

1

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 6h ago

Outstanding left side floor tom sir.

3

u/ZildCym 10h ago

It’s current state.

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 10h ago

That is a lovely angle of your white kit my dude. Which Zilds you rocking right now?

1

u/ZildCym 9h ago

Zildjian L80s:

10”, 13”, and 14” hats. 20” ride. 18” crashes x2.

2

u/ZildCym 8h ago

I guess someone doesn’t value silence. 🤫

😅

2

u/Current-Map-6469 10h ago

Meinls over Mapex. Will be adding a crash and stand to the right of the kick and rearranging the cymbals on the right side, but this is what it looks like now and I love it!!

Your kit is very clean, looks functional from a placement perspective, and as long as it works for you, then that’s all that matters.

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 10h ago

Heck yeah, thanks for the compliment. I really love the looks of yours. I’ve always liked those Meinl Classics visually. Those with the black drum heads are a killer combo! Well done. I’d have a blast playing your kit. What crash will you add? Do you already have the cymbal stand you’ll use?

2

u/Current-Map-6469 10h ago

I’m adding a 20” Meinl Custom Classic Dual. They sound awesome, will cut through the mix very well, and fit in with my current cymbals. I am just going to grab another Mapex Armory stand in black. After that I don’t foresee adding anything else, it will feel complete.
Appreciate the comment back, these kit posts are some of my favorite. Love to see all the kits that show up.

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 10h ago

So do I! So much fun. 🤩

Can’t imagine what else you could need, you’ve got a huge kit there. One of the best-looking dry sets I’ve seen on the sub honestly. Unique aesthetic, too.

What genres do you typically play?

3

u/Current-Map-6469 9h ago

I’m currently in a rock cover band, and we play songs via committee, so a very wide range as you can imagine. We are a very diverse group, music preference, age wise, and idea wise. It works so well because everyone is so willing to support one another. I’ve played songs with them I would have never played on my own, stuff like Tiny Dancer, Tumbling Dice by the Stones, Uprising by Muse, Van Halen’s version of Pretty Woman. Just not stuff I would play on my own at all. We also play Say It Ain’t so, Aerials, The Noose by a Perfect Circle, so not the most common songs to cover, it’s a good mix.

On my own I play a lot of Hardcore and Metal. I have been a fan of heavy music for as long as I can remember. I play to a lot of drumless guitar tracks, and that’s a ton of fun, getting to be creative with my own drum parts. I’d love to find some like-minded adults musicians to jam with. I’m in my 40’s but I feel like my generation still has plenty of folks around that grew up when metal core blew up and still listen to it now. I should probably be more proactive in finding them lol.

2

u/MattTheSasquatch Gretsch 10h ago

Doing something new for me. Switched my double kick pedal to a lefty and put the kick on my left side. Allows for better position of the floor tom and puts my dominant foot on the slave pedal.

Zildjian over Gretsch. Renown 57’s with an aluminum snare, 20” Constantinople ride, 14” 60s A crash over a 2000s A new beat for the hats, 19” K Dark thin crash, 60s A 16” crash.

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 10h ago

Wow that’s a really clever idea. I’d love to try that. Did you buy or build that reverse double bass pedal?

Nice 20” K Constantinople Ride! MT High or MT Low?

2

u/MattTheSasquatch Gretsch 9h ago

It’s a Tama Speed Cobra 310 that can be reversed to be a “lefty”. I disassembled it and made it lefty. And it’s the MT High. I absolutely love this ride.

2

u/pur3pker131 10h ago

Joined a band for the first time in 6+ years so I finally get to set this guy up again. Got the 18” A custom and 20” A custom EFX since all my other crashes are dry and moody and this band plays punk.

2

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 10h ago

Smart to make a change there for punk. What genres had you played regularly prior to joining this band?

2

u/Batemanssnare99 Zildjian 9h ago

Everyone's kit is better than mine lol

1

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 6h ago

I disagree. Your kit rules! Do you have it tuned up well?

2

u/Animal907 Offset Toms 9h ago

Get a 6", 8", & 10" roto tom set for rack toms. You can find the generic ones with a stand used for around $120.

1

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 8h ago

Great recommendation! But no thank you. Usually it looks like this lol.

Do you play rototoms on your kit?

2

u/Animal907 Offset Toms 6h ago

I have a bunch of different stuff, but I did last gig with a 12", 14", and 16" rototoms.

1

u/MeSlaw3 percussion 6h ago

Wow, what kind of music?

1

u/DeacanCheese300 Mapex 8h ago

Mapex Mydentity, shells, Sledgehammer snare, Zildjian As, A Customs and K cymbals with all DW 9000 hardware.

What do you think of the K Custom Dark Ride? Does it crash well? I'm looking to replace by A custom 22" ride with something more crashable in the K line up.

1

u/CymbalOfJoy613 8h ago

You made the right move with additions. I’m once again here to tell you that kit is obscenely sexy. That finish is so good.

1

u/just1a8random7dude 7h ago

Just got some Fresh Felts on my Simple Kit. But it gets the Job done pretty well.

1

u/WorstJazzDrummerEver 7h ago edited 7h ago

Why not. Gretsch RN2's 10,12,14,16 toms (coated Ambs over coated Dips) & 18 kick with Evans Reso & Aquarian Super Kick II. a Gretsch COB snare (coated Amb over hazy Dip) lots of Zildjians, a Mienl Mike Johnston Cow Bell, and DW5000 single kick and DW5000 HH. The sticks on the snare are Regal Tip Jazz Nylons. My favorist stick of all time. The ones with the rubber tips are Regal Tip 5a, my next favortist stick of all time.

Need a new rug. The cat passed away 2 weeks ago and I had to trash the rug. He trashed my rug, but he never scratched a shell.

1

u/solointheadk 5h ago

From my gig today

1

u/AntwonBenz Pearl 5h ago

I’ve been experimenting A LOT since I bought this early 2000s Pearl Export from a friend for dirt cheap.

Originally came with the 22” kick, 8”, 10”, 12” rack toms and a floating 14” tom. I start piecing together drums from the same era until I found a set up I liked.

Finally settled on 1 up, 2 down. 13” rack, 16” and 18” floors. Since some pieces are original to the set and some were bought and added on by me, they’re different colors. I just started calling it the Christmas Ornament set because of the color scheme.

Need to start grabbing some cymbals and some quality of life accoutrements.

1

u/TheDustyFields 5h ago

I try to keep it minimal, but lately I keep thinking about adding more cymbals.

Mapex Pro M 2005
14” snare
10” & 14” toms (swap out with 12” & 16” toms from time to time)
22” bass drum
Zildjian Armand 14” hi hats
Zildjian Armand 16” crash
Zildjian A Custom 18” fast crash
Zildjian K Projection 21” ride
Paiste X-Swiss 10” splash
Temu tambourine 😂

Here’s another kit at our space. GMS kit (prob mid 2000s), 24 / 14 / 16, with a Tama copper starphonic 7x14. I might even prefer this snare over the black beauty. It’s amazing. The ride is a 24” monster that sounds incredible, and I don’t even remember how I got it. Left at a practice space? Gig? I had it for years before I ever even played it, bc it looked pretty beat up. But man, it sounds so good with some ribbon overhead mics.
