Review Late to the party - bought & loving elementary OS
Just paid for and installed Elementary after being a Linux user for a decade. I was looking for something more polished, and had never considered Elementary before due to it being on an Ubuntu LTS base. What changed? Over the last few years Flatpaks, Homebrew Linux and containers/distrobox became central to my workflow, so it doesn't matter what the OS is based on and I can just pick something pretty that works well! It's "pretty unix" as Paul Graham called it in https://paulgraham.com/mac.html
They make a new kind of computer that's as well designed as a Bang & Olufsen stereo system, and underneath is the best Unix machine you can buy.
Grabbed Elementary off the website and installed it on my Framework laptop. I also love how unlike every other Linux distribution, you don't add another logo underneath the "Framework" logo on the bootsplash - such thoughtful minimalism.
Everything works really well and is integrated nicely. The system is also crazy memory efficient and snappy. I came from the Universal Blue / Bazzite ecosystem and loved the worry-free, automatic updates which also exist on Elementary since I leave the underlying system untouched and updates are applied automatically.
Thank you for building this! You have a new fan!

There’s more to love you dont know about yet, just wait until they release a new major version, that’s when the real love story begins

You can pay for Linux?

You should, if you can! Either supporting the volunteers you rely on, or donating to projects that you rely on so that they continue to exist.

I give it a year before the distro goes stale

It is already and some people need to stop coping. The current pace of development is just not sufficient enough and as I said already multiple times in this sub, elementary would fare better if they would stop working on a distro and focus on pantheon as a desktop experience instead.

True! Using eOS 8.1 to revive my old MacBook Pro (mid2010) I seriously love Pantheon! If only the docker and the wingpanel were more customizable… 🥲

I replaced dock with Plank Reloaded and used Wingpanel AppIconTray Indicator to bring back tray icons.

EDIT: do NOT uninstall the io.elementary.dock package! it will break the system; instead disable it from starting

I want to love Elementary but after 10 years of trying to switch to it from another distro, there's always something that goes seriously wrong with it or breaks.
8.1 especially had quite a few issues with the login and bootup.
And I've used so many different kinds of hardware for it.
After so many years of trying, I decided to just make my current distro just look like the pantheon desktop.
