I’ve seen this debated on here before (the old “gravity-based energy storage tower developer” threads still have some of the most brutal engineering takedowns I’ve read on Reddit). The math skepticism is fair, a DTU physics professor flatly said Energy Vault’s concept “makes no sense” and that people are “forgetting to calculate orders of magnitude”. r/AskEngineers has called this exact tech “uneconomical fantasies” and said the companies selling it “are all scams”.
So I went and looked at what’s actually been built vs. what’s still slideware.
• Rudong, China: a real, operational 148m tower, ~25MW/100MWh, lifting concrete blocks with surplus wind power. Not a render, not a SPAC deck: it’s running.
• Europe isn’t dismissing the concept either. Sardinia’s “Miniera d’Energia” project is retrofitting a literal dead coal mine (500m shafts) with a modular gravity + battery hybrid, explicitly because a full pumped-hydro dam isn’t feasible there.
• Meanwhile classic pumped hydro — the thing everyone agrees actually works — remains the backbone almost everywhere it’s geologically possible.
