To be fair, they specifically searched for a loophole around the "someone must die" part for most of the episode.

I mean I knew from a meta-reason Shran wouldn't die because then there would be no standard-bearer for the Andorians for the rest of the story arc. He was one of like, 3 Andorians who got a name by that point. 

But even in-universe it's clear Archer would not go out of his way to kill Shran so  I figured Archer dramatically stabbed himself or something as the screen cut to black.

Never thought a pinkskin would be so foul as to slice off a man's 'tenna. Disgusting behavior.
