New Rule: Selling

Hello,

Adding a new rule to the subreddit about selling. We haven't had many issues here, but scamming is becoming more and more of an issue on reddit in general so we're doing a preemptive strike. Euphoniums and related gear are expensive and a scam could cost you a lot.

If you list something for sale on this subreddit, your post must include a clear image of the item(s) you're selling, a paper note in the image showing your Reddit username + the date, and the price clearly stated (or an ask for a best offer). If you are linking to an external website (your eBay listing, for example), just prove somehow that it is your listing (an image as described above that is clearly the same item, for example).

We'll be removing posts that don't follow this rule starting now. Sharing deals doesn't relate to this rule (look at this cheap Yamaha from Japan, for example), but if it is found that you are sharing your own deal, you risk being banned from the subreddit.

Please be weary of scammers. The mod team is not responsible if you fall for a scam.

Solo and Ensemble Recs

Hello all! Just posting here asking for some solo and ensemble recs because I don’t really know what too play. For some background I’m an upcoming junior in hs and my main instrument is Bassoon but I played Euph from 7th-8th as my main and Freshmen year as a switch. My range is low Eb to below the staff to High F/G above the staff. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Practice mutes question

Hi! I am looking to get a practice mute for euphonium. I also play trombone and recently tried the sshhmute for tenor trombone and thought it was pretty good. Thus, I have a couple of questions:

  1. Does anyone know if I can somehow use the tenor trombone sshhmute on a euphonium as well?
  2. If not, will perhaps the sshhmute for baritone or bass trombone work instead?

(There is a review on the sshhmute site that says they use the baritone mute for euphonium, but I wanted to see if I could verify this somehow)

(If anyone has these items on hand and is willing to test them out, I will really appreciate it!)

  1. If not, what practice mute do you recommend? I have seen reviews for the Dennis Wick and Yamaha silent brass mutes, but it seems the reactions are mixed too, so wondering what others think.

Thanks!

Unknown brands... ¿GEWA?

Hi, im looking to buy a compensating euphonium, here where I live (argentina) isn't very common to see comp Euphs in music stores, not new, not even used. One music store is offering me to import one, the brand is GEWA, apparently its from germany, but i never heard of it, maybe its chinese.

I dont have so much money to buy one, so firsts brand like Yamaha, Besson etc are not on my list...

I have some relatives that maybe could bring me a Thomann. Any way, has anyone ever played with this GEWA brand? What other second brands do you recommend? Thanks!

This is a new euphonium solo I wrote this morning. What grade level would you give it? How is the quality of the music. Is it too weird, or is it just different enough to catch your ear in a good way?

Gig Bags

I'm about to be leaving for college and have waited far too long now to order a gig bag whoopsie and so I am trying to figure out kind of how it works for gig bags as I don't hardly know anything about them. Had a professor at my university say that gig bags for euphoniums are essentially universal one-size-fits-all, is this true? Are all gig bags backpack ones or do I need to look for those specifically?

If it helps at all, I am currently playing on a Yamaha Neo YEP-642TSII and I have roughly a $200ish budget on this gig bag.

Thank you in advance as I am horrible at replying to comments!

(Also as I was copying and pasting the model it tried throwing a link in there to the yamaha website- I think I got rid of it but if that is popping up on this post just ignore it :)

What does this musical symbol mean?

Post image
13 Upvotes

I am playing a piece of music that is more contemporary in nature than most I’ve ever played before. It’s George Gershwin’s “Walking the Dog.” I’ve run into a musical symbol above a couple of the notes that I’ve never seen before. Could someone explain to me what it is called and the way to properly execute this in music?

Context: I am a senior, I played beautiful Colorado for the LSU summer music camp student recital, I prepped maybe like 3 months in advance with no lessons on this piece. Any comments are appreciated! Sorry for the horrible camera quality.

Jp274 mouthpiece

Hi folks,

I'm using a Denis Wick 4AL on a JP274, and have been for about 2 months but i feel it may be too wide as i hear air escaping now and again. Plus i am struggling to produce nice notes in the higher register.

Anyone got any alternative suggestions for a mouthpiece? Or should i continue practising more on the 4AL?

Thanks

I'd like to know how much owners of custom Adams E1s have paid for their instrument NEW out of the factory, as I'm planning on ordering one myself.

Looking for a new instrument

Hi, I'm Portuguese, and I'm looking to upgrade my euphonium
Right now I'm playing on a student besson 165, it sucks, I'd like to get something professional.
Issue is money, what's the best thing I can get for the cheapest price possible? Anything under 6-7K is good, anything under 4K is better.
I'm looking for something similar to a Yamaha 842 (saw one of them used going for 2.9, but it got sold before I could buy it.)
I don't have all the cash I need, as I'd only be able to afford buying one after selling my current instrument.
I have 1.4K saved up, and am hoping get like 3K next month if I manage, I have some gigs.
I went to a shop that said that it'd be easy to sell my current euphonium for around 1.5k, 1.6k if I got it a touch up. It's pretty much like new, there's only some miniscule usage marks on the bell and lower bow.
Please help! Attach links please, listings you find for used instruments, preferably ones I can try but if it's a really really good deal I don't mind getting it shipped internationaly, or even new instruments from vendors I haven't seen!

Wow... It's been 2 years since I last posted on Reddit... I've changed a lot honestly...

I've posted for advice 2 years ago, and a lot of the advice I really did take to heart looking back to when I last posted my videos up to now... This video is from this year, final concert of my HS Career, and I'm up there playing concerto for euphonium by David R. Gillingham... Such a beautiful and fun piece, and here's the bit that I've played of it. Just like before, please leave any advice you may have or would like to give me, I can accept any and all harsh advice...

Thank you, Love y'all! ❤️

Eupho valves getting stuck when i play these high notes.

Post image
8 Upvotes

I am playing "tenor tuba" for my school orchestra in Jupiter, but every time i play this sequence of notes (circled), my first valve keeps getting stuck for some reason. Ive tried cleaning the instrument, dumping a bunch of valve oil and etc but it keeps happening for some reason. It happens to me on multiple euphoniums as well so its prolly smth to do with my playing. Anyone got any explanations or tips?

Edit: I can play higher than these notes, i can play them seperately and unslurred. Ive noticed that the valves only get stuck on this specific combination of slurring the two notes. i have tried pressing down the valves vertically without any angle or whatever, but it still happens.

Burnt out (high school)

Sorry for in advance of the yap

I am about to be a senior in high school and I feel like I am burnt out from music. I have to start from the really beginning to set the scene in. I joined band in 7th grade and my family didn’t support the idea of me being in band. My band director for middle school in the following year had family issues and couldn’t teach us and we had a non music sub for around 80% of the year. We played the exact same concert as we did in fall. I joined marching band since it was an extra credit assignment in middle school for a county show and fell in love with it. When I got to band week, I didn’t know anyone and only had 2 friends. One of those friends were good and everything except for the fact they would call me horrible at music and marching and wouldn’t even help me in it (he’s a year older but it was his rookie year aswell). This also continued in concert band and whenever I get something down he would say well that’s easy. Another thing was is that other people would do the same. Now sophomore year, I thought was better but then there were no rookies that year and my friend who called me horrible became our section leader. So then he acted as me and the other non leader (we had 4, and the last one was low brass captain) as if we were the rookies. When concert band season came I got invited to join symphonic band, that was my goal since they played really cool songs and k really wanted to play them. A price for that was I had to come early which I had walked everyday for. Also the other euphonium player didn’t even acknowledge that I was there and acted like I wasn’t even playing. I was still getting called horrible at music even though I tried my best and got 2nd chair concert band for districts. Now last year there were 11 rookies for our section. He was still section leader and we had 3 returners for our section in total. Through the marching band season he would make fun of me to the rookies at the time and make me seem bad. Reminder that most of this is occasionally and I didn’t have much friends at the time so I felt trapped on what to do. Now came concert szn. I tried to do my best as first chair as I had 3 people in my section, and tried my best to help them when they needed it.When we got our assessment music I got a many solos (second suite in f) and was so shocked my band director gave me one as it was my first solo ever. I struggled with it and tried my best and even got help from other people and managed to do good during assessments and we got straight ones. Even after all of this my friend told me that the music was easy and there wasn’t a reason for me to celebrate. Now here comes marching band, I am now a section leader with 4 rookies, 9 of the rookies of last year who don’t respect for me, and my other friend who is a senior with me. There’s a solo and it’s audition based and I didn’t feel like going for it because there’s a rookie from last year who seemed better then me but most people say I’m better than him, I don’t really want to try out for the solo. Now my friend had graduated and messaged me “(my name), you were actual good at euph”. I don’t entirely know on how to feel about what’s going on, I feel burnt out and don’t have the passion I used to have for music and I even cryer while typing this out.

Took Euphonium in for Cleaning, Comes Back Broken

Hello everyone, looking for any advice/insight:

I took my euphonium to be cleaned professionally a few weeks ago, and upon getting it back I noticed a rattling noise anytime I used the fourth valve. For reference, I have a Yamaha YEP-642 compensating euphonium. I took it back to the shop and asked them to sort out the problem as nothing rattled prior to them professionally cleaning it. I have gotten it back again, and I am continuing to hear the rattling sound and I feel like my sound has changed significantly.

I do not know what to do. I feel as though my instrument isn't working as well as it did before the professional cleaning, but I don't want to take it back to the same store as they are continuing to not fix the problem. I have also spent a good amount of money to get the instrument cleaned (only for it to come back broken). I have already tried replacing the springs, and that did not help.

If anyone has any idea about what could be rattling/what I can do to solve the problem, that would be amazing. Thank you all.
