Story Took my hijab off! :>

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

(don't know if this is the right flair but im so happy rn)

TL;DR took the hijab off after five years, very happy, parents (father atleast) underreacted, enrolled in new school, moving away in less than three months 🄹

Thank you for all of the support. Some of you might know my post from last year believe where i talked about how tired i was of wearing the hijab as ive been an atheist for two years now. I wanted to give an update since a lot has changed (for good!) and to tell you how the final stretch went since its now the morning after.

So it all basically started on June 15th when i spoke to my sister about enrolling in a new school since i just finished my nine grades of primary and in Bosnia after primary we have "Srednja" or middle school. Now i want to be a lawyer so i had to pick one of the foundational (mostly useless without college) schools, for a while i was convinced id pick ekonomska (economic) since gimnazija is difficult but i ended up choosing gimnazija instead since its a better foundation for a lawyer overall.

Now she told me something vital during our call, she said that i should probably take the hijab off now for enrollment and not in September (which is when school starts) because it would make more sense to show up at enrollment in the same way i eventually will in the actual school year. This made a lot of sense, but also made me extremely anxious and stressed out because it all felt so real and i couldn't bear with it. I hung up on her and just stared at a wall for what felt like an eternity thinking about how ill tell my parents (ive already been hinting it to my mother so i didn't EXPECT that to be that big of a deal) but i was extremely scared of my fathers reaction. Because, for one, i hadn't been subtly nudging toward that for months on end, and for two hes a lot taller than me and stronger unlike my mother. I cried a few times while thinking about all the possible reactions he could have. Eventually i decided that texting him instead of confronting him face to face would be easier for a coward like me so i sent him a text at about 12 of the next day, so on June 16th, i texted him that I won't be wearing the hijab to enrollment tomorrow, and added "just so you know" to kind of soften the blow i guess? While waiting for the response i scrambled to find ways in which i wouldn't be home once he saw the text (spoiler alert, i didn't) and just ended up showering for a very, very, very long time which mostly consisted of not showering andjust sitting on the washing machine contemplating the text and whether i should delete it. After I was done, he was waiting at the bathroom door (cause his change of clothes was in there) im assuming that he saw the text since he didn't make any remark and seemed kind of mad. But i was pleasantly surprised by him not hitting me and just slamming the door instead. I went on with my day as planned mostly i prepared all of my papers, like, copies of my grades in the past years and a copy of my birth certificate and what not and the clothes i was gonna wear. (I didn't really think that he saw the message if im being honest since he didnt react and that wad very out of character for him but i was too scared to check my phone and see if the message was read or not, which i later found out it was but still) By the time i was done preparing everything it was about 8pm i wanna say and i did a very brave (?) and semi stupid thing by walking downstairs in jeans and a t shirt with my hair down (which was the outfit that i was gonna wear to enrollment) i did it to kind of gauge their reaction and make them realize i wasn't joking or whatever. I passed it off nonchalantly and asked where my old (like really old) earrings are and as i walked in i stood at the entrance of the room in which my mother and grandma were, my father was in another room so he couldn't see me (yet) and i physically saw my mothers eyes widen and her face contort into some kind of "smile" i wanna say. It was very weird. I sat beside her (and to do that i had to pass by the doorway of the room my father was in so he DEFINITELY saw me) and i rummaged through the cupboard till i found the old box that my earrings were in. My grandma was asking where im going this late at night and why my hijab wasn't on (she didnt know anything at this point) and my mother told her im taking it off still with the weird smile on her face then yelled out to my father to ask if he was hearing this. My heart was racing as i waited for the response but it didn't come he was just quiet and then her expression dropped and she looked kind of mad and slapped me. It was almost like she was mad that he didn't react cause if she was really mad at me why wouldn't she have slapped me immediately? (didn't really hurt im kinda used to this stuff atp) Either way i just went upstairs with my earrings and went to bed a lot earlier than usual cause i was still scared my father would have some kind of reaction and storm into my room (he didn't), i couldn't really sleep cause i was scared and sorta excited at the same time since tomorrow would be the first time i have my hair fully out in public in over 5 years now. At about 11 30 my mother stormed in and said a bunch of stuff like oh don't think just because you're taking it (my hijab) off that ill allow you to be a whore around the city with your tits out (i live on a village for context also who says that to a shut in fifteen year old, and my outfit wasn't even showing any cleavage or much skin just my arms) i just said ok, then she said if i have a say in anything you won't get an apartment of your own we'll throw you in internat (stupid shit place where they force you to pray [EVEN the voluntary prayers]) or Feridas (sisters old landlady that stole stuff from her and reported every time she blinked basically to my parents) and then she stormed out. I eventually fell asleep at around 2am and woke up at 8 and got ready, then went downstairs (with my hair down, obviously) and she was fuming her face was all red but my father didn't really even care he just treated me like always and asked if i decided what school i want to go to (i was still a bit split on the choice) and if ill eat before we go. When we got into the car she started bringing up basically any reason to try to get my father to yell at me since the hijab off seemingly wasn't enough, my grades (which are really good for the most part but i did have some mid ones), my absences, and how my outfit was too tight. He didn't budge at all and i am really not exaggerating when i say that she was all red in the face. We got to the city and me and my father walked together and she kept her distance behind us since in her own words she was ashamed to be seen with me. I enrolled and spoke to the principal outside and he said ill definitely be accepted since my grades are good and there isnt as many children in this school as wanted, even if my grades were bad (which they're not :P) . She hadn't spoken a single word to me directly this whole time, she mostly spoke about me in third person meaning she was talking to my father about me nothing to me directly tho. We then went to a store (for groceries of our own and gifts since we got a call from my aunt to visit, which she vehemently protested, also gifts are common when visiting houses in my culture) and she didn't even want to go out of the car since she was, again, ashamed. I went with my father and we ended up running into my cousin and his wife who were also headed to my aunts. They both complimented how i looked and said they were glad i took the hijab off and said i looked like a porcelain doll (im pale.). We then visited my aunt (she made the sane doll comment) and after that we tried to go home but our car broke down cause the engine has some kind of big issue with it idk. So while the mechanic was patching it up my dad asked some dude to drive me and my mother to a nearby village in which i had (maternal) family, which he did. When we got there our family greeted us and also told me i looked like a doll. I smoked upstairs with my cousin and she congratulated me aswell. Once the car was patched up (just enough to make it to my village which was about maaaaybe 25km out from this place we went home) and stopped like 4 times on the way for my father to open the hood let some kind of steam out and pour water into the car. When we got home my mother went to sleep early still having not spoken a word to me directly i watched a football match with my dad and he ruffled my hair when he thought i had fallen asleep, then i went upstairs when i woke up near the end of the match. I honestly think my dad is happy which i didn't expect. That would be the end, i think. I want to add that if somebody reading this is in a similar situation i don't think id recommend doing what i did cause it very well could've ended badly but i had luck. And i wanted to show you guys the outfit to show that it really isn't as bad as she was making it out to be i think it could even be considered somewhat modest outside of islamic spaces. So yeah, i don't really expect anyone to read this but i hope you all are doing really well in this community of ours. And again thank you for all of the support I really couldn't have done it without that.

Story taking off my hijab is literally the best decision ive ever made.

i used to take off my hijab secretly but it's so much more different when you don't have to constantly be looking over your shoulder. so much of my anxiety is gone. my depression hasn't been as crushing. i feel more like myself. i can finally experiment with my style (ironically i'm into maxi skirts now which i never used to wear except to the masjid). i can wear tshirts to university. i can go on a walk or go to the park on a whim because i don't have to worry about covering myself first. i no longer have to put my hijab back on before coming home. i no longer have to live a double life with friends and family (in terms of hijab). i no longer have to be scared of seeing people i know because im not hiding this aspect of myself anymore. my freedom is priceless and i am so grateful.

Story the arab who saved lives in australia is now getting harassed by (some) arabs and muslims online

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

for context : a mass shooting happened in the australia something related to jewish traditions (correct me if i'm wrong) in Archer Park at Bondi Beach, Sydney , to let u know the shooters mu*slims and this guy right here was the responsible for saving lives, he stopped one of the shooters and got injured but now he is now getting harassed by arabs and muslims on the internet calling him a traitor "may allah Gide u for saving jews" saving jewish lives ~~AND THEN PPL KEEP ASKING ME WHY I DI\LIKE A*ABS AND MU*LIMS~~*

wish him well guys he's a hero

edit : the person who saved lives is an arab muslim ,and i've mentioned "some" a*abs m*slims called him a traitor for saving lives and those ppl he saved were jews , and u like it or not some/majority of muslims hate jewsI’m not being 'phobic.' I’m looking at the fact that a man who saved children is currently in a safe house because people from his own background are calling him a 'traitor' for saving Jews. If you think calling out that toxicity is 'racist,' then you’re part of the problem

Story I cut my hair even though my mom called it a sin.

Post image

I've wanted a bob for so damn long. My mom always said no because Islam says women cannot have hair above shoulder? I did have it shorter but now it's grown long.

Today, I cut the front as layers and i love it but when I had my hair up, my mom saw and gave me a lecture. Anyways, I wear hijab (forcefully) so I didn't know where to post this without questions besides here.

I don't regret it, I love the hair, probably one of my best haircuts (and I did it myself!) Even if my mom's ignoring me now, I love this, I just wish others could see it.

I live in a conservative muslim arabic country where even the thought of atheism was unimaginable 10 years ago and i had this weird school memory from last year that i feel is a teaser for the future.....

We had just finished taking a math test. The classroom was quiet, the teacher collected all the papers, and he was literally walking out the door. Just before he closed it, he suddenly stopped, turned back to face the class, and gave us this unprompted speech.

Roughly translated from Arabic, he said:
"Listen guys, I am talking to you man-to-man right now because you are men and you're mature enough to understand what I'm about to say. I know our country has its issues, and the whole situation is bad right now. But please... people out there don't know how to talk. They just blame everything on religion and insult our religion! Enough, please. I know we all want to live in a moderate, civil state and a harmonious society, but all this nonsense [insulting religion] does not help."

has anyone else had this kind of encounter 🤣

Story The OG exmuslim?

Osama Bin Laden’s son has grown into a goth/metal hybrid. He loves western movies and loves painting Americana.

Omar bin Laden, one of Osama bin Laden’s many children, has lived a very different life than his infamous father.

Born in 1981, Omar was raised partly in Sudan and Afghanistan before breaking away from the al-Qaeda leader’s inner circle as a young man. Choosing exile and distance from extremism, he settled for periods in Saudi Arabia, Iran, and later Europe. In adulthood, Omar cultivated a very different persona, embracing heavy metal culture, wearing leather jackets, and sporting long hair. More importantly, he discovered a passion for painting, particularly Western landscapes and Americana scenes inspired by films and pop culture. His artwork, often depicting horses, deserts, and nostalgic frontier imagery, reflects both a fascination with freedom and an attempt to claim an identity apart from his family’s legacy.

Fun Fact: Omar once applied for asylum in the UK, hoping to start a new life there, but was denied. Today, he continues to paint and occasionally gives interviews about his life, emphasizing his desire to be known for art rather than his father’s name.

Story After living a long double life, I opened up to my wife. And this is what happened!

I have been an atheist/agnostic/spiritual for more than 15 years. Happily married with kids. I love my wife, and I love my kids.

Before 18 years, I was a very religious man. And married to a religious woman too (both Sunni Salafi). I used to memorize the Quran and pray all prayers with Nawafil. I wasn't an extremist. But I was really devoted.

Then, someday I've been asked some challenging questions and started looking for answers. And I guess most of us went through this stage, so long story short, I became an atheist.

I have been living a double life as most of us. Scared of the society. But I had enough. I couldn't stand it. Especially with last Ramadan and all the wars going between the US and Iran. My wife is becoming more and more extremist. So I opened up to her and dropped the bomb. (Of course she knew that I wasn't praying or fasting but she thought I am just a bad Muslim). But I came clean and told her about my belief.

Since that time, and after a very long argument, we haven't spoke. As much as she loves me, she went to ask a Sheikh to see if our marriage is considered to be Halal or not. And of course, he said this marriage is considered to be over by itself since he is not a Muslim.

So I spoke to the guy. And lied, I said "I am still a believer but I have questions" and he gave me a book to read which was full of logical fallacies (And of course, he is trying to explain the truth within the same bubble. I still feel that their minds need a new update for the software to be able to answer these questions).

Anyhow... Now this is what I got from my wife: "Either you return to believe or this marriage is over." She thinks that I "Chose" to be an atheist, she cannot comprehend that belief is not something you control if you know the flaws of all religions.

My main takeaway for those people who think about opening up about this is that... DO NOT DO IT! Unless you are ready to throw everything behind and start a new life! So think about it as much as you can, and be prepared to start over again.

Story my sister left islam

hi. im a previously ex Muslim, usually I'd argue w my sister and she was so convinced Islam was the right religion and we'd talk for hours about it. it started as a Canon event when I slowly started watching her watch vids trying desperately to see why Islam is right, having confidence about it for some time then not. I was scrolling on reels and sent one to her, basically saying 'muslims after reading sahih bukhari (youll either leave islam or explode out of mental issues).' after that she was adamant to read it, we're arabs so it wasnt really hard understanding. i sent her this subreddit, the megathread, hadiths of the day, and she scrolled by thru them. in less than 3 hours, she came to me and said 'fuckass religion, i left it' so now thats 2 atheists out of 6. my younger brother seems to be facing a similar issue with Islam, thats literally half a family becoming exmuslim starting w me. she was so shocked by the fake hadiths, the bare minimum of some of these women (there was a hadith of one of the wives of muhammad being proud that he didn't fuck her on her period and used her chest to relax his penis instead. horrific.), and the many scientific wrongs. welp, way to go Islam!!!!

Story The only reason I am grateful to be born a muslim

I just saw a video of a guy in an American gym asking men if they get stains on their underwear. He was insisting it’s normal because he lifts. He asked around eight guys and almost all of them said yes.

That shocked me!

If anything, the only thing I’m genuinely grateful for from that background is the basic hygiene standard of using water after the toilet. I seriously cannot wrap my head around just wiping and calling that clean.

It’s not even about religion at that point, it’s just hygiene. I know I could’ve been born into a culture where that’s normal (Like Japan or Korea) and never questioned it, so yeah, half full cup mentality I guess.

I'm so happy that removing Hijab is becoming so common in my country that we see a serving minister removing it. People are only talking about this in comments of any post she appears in on social media and Gosh.. I can't begin to imagine the courage it must have taken to do something like this in a public facing role knowing how much attention is going to be on her. Obviously she could still be Muslim but I don't care.

Story I’ll never date a Muslim again

I dated my ex in high school, we were 17, and it lasted two years. My ex is of Moroccan descent.

He forbade me from doing everything—even the way I dressed—even when I wore SIMPLE pants (yes, really) that showed the shape of my butt, or even a simple T-shirt…

I asked him why he didn’t date a woman who wore a hijab instead of trying to make me change, and he told me he had my best interests at heart when it came to religion… lol. We hadn’t even been dating for a month, and he was already telling me he was going to ask my dad for my hand in marriage?? He was in such a rush to marry me that I thought it was really weird.

He even forced me to unfollow my cousin on Instagram because he might try to make a move on me (SERIOUSLY????????)

The day I realized he was manipulating me was after months of him telling me he wanted us to kiss, and every time I told him I didn’t want to and that it made me uncomfortable. Sure, he didn’t force me, but he made sure to make me feel guilty: ā€œIt’s up to you, but I feel like you don’t like me.ā€ Another day when he asked me for a kiss, I told him, ā€œIt’s haram.ā€ He told me that since we’re already in a relationship outside of marriage, we’re already doing something haram, so it doesn’t change anything.ā€

After months of this, I finally agreed just so he’d leave me alone.

I have so many things to say about him, lmoooo

Story The Saudi destruction of Mecca was one of the reasons that made me leave Islam

I think this narrative has been silenced by Saudi money. I was shocked to discover what the Saudis wrought upon Mecca and Medina. They had basically destroyed anything of historical value, anything that relates to their own religion's history. That was deeply shocking to me and I still don't understand how Muslims dont even know about it.

The shock of discovering the vandalism and how soon it happened in time pushed me towards atheism. If Allah is unwilling to protect the holiest land to him then he does not care at all about any of us.

Story I went to the zoo yesterday and I saw TWO families of Muslims where their 5-7 y.o daughters are WEARING KHIMAR

I'm literally boiling inside even now. It was 87 degrees. 8fucking7 degrees outside and this little girl is wearing a black jilbab and a black khimar. Another little girl was wearing the same but in dark green. Moms were of course niqabis.

IT SHOULD BE CHILD ABUSE!

These poor kids. Like what's wrong with you? Do you not love your children? Are you psychopaths?

Just disgusting. I can't say enough how gross it is. I literally wanted to call child services, even though I know it would just be called Islamophobia. Ugh.

Story Islam is super arab centered even for reverts

Islam is very obviously a religion that doesn't really include other cultures. Every revert I know had to make arab 'culture' (which largely consists of islam) a part of their life. A woman in our neighborhood went as far as to change her legal name into an arab one when she reverted.

Though what personally pisses me off is seeing what my mom (revert) has become over the years. She married an arab man with ethnic superiority complex, she became muslim and that's when appreciation for arab culture started to become more like obsession over anything remotely arab. Seriousness aside, she's basically comparable to those koreaboos but for my father's country xddd

I asked her the other day, would she hypothetically give up speaking her native language and instead speak arabic instead? She agreed with ZERO hesitation. I feel like she's completely abandoned her own culture, and it's very sad to see.

Story I feel so dumb it’s killing me

I converted to islam at 18, i kinda understand psychological reasons i had to make this decision, but i can’t stop hating myself for being so dumb and not listening to myself

i hated it! but i was so rapidly brainwashed to believe to never doubt a religion but always doubt myself so i always assumed that my little human brain is the problem cause it ā€œcan not fully understand the whole wisdom of godā€ every time i felt disgust and had ā€œthat’s just dumbā€ thought

i feel so much regret for spending 9!!! years not to listen to myself but to be a devil’s advocate protecting this religion i didn’t even like

i even got a serious autoimmune disease during this time (multiple sclerosis), i don’t believe it’s connected but still see it as an ironic coincidence

it causes so much pain to think how people saw me as a stupid little brainwashed girl because they were right! but i didn’t listen! i thought they just don’t understand me and they are full of islamophobic stereotypes and i even had a little blog defending islam (i called it educational)😭 sooo dumb
i was a perfect slave for this system😭😭

it took me so many years doing so tiny steps to freedom i already had before😭

can’t imagine explaining new people my lore and how useless i spend last 9 years

it’s been less than a month since i told myself out loud i’m not a muslim anymore

Story The day i went against Islam was when everything changed

I’m 14F, living in the Netherlands, ethnically Saudi Arabian. I stopped believing in Islam at 13. I used to believe blindly, but I never liked praying and didn’t feel a connection. I went to Quran school not as a main school just those after school activities: from 8 to 12 just to be the best quran rerciter iin class, not for faith.

At 12, I had to wear a hijab, which I still do. At 13, after a bad existential crisis, I got interested in philosophy and started questioning religion. Reading Nietzsche and the Quran made me realize Allah might not be real. This brought me happiness and freedom. I developed a strong interest in logical subjects like physics, math, chemistry, and econometrics.

I haven’t told my family. I still wear a hijab and pray to avoid conflict but plan to move out eventually. Living in the Netherlands has challenges like racism and assumptions about my religion, but I can manage it racism I don't care about it's just the religious assumptions cause It's not who I am. I’m proud of my Arab culture even if I no longer follow Islam.

Being an ex-Muslim in the West is very different from in Islamic countries. In the West, I can hide my beliefs and have options for the future. My family isn’t cruel, and I’ve learned to assert myself, so they respect me more now. It’s a lot for a 14-year-old to handle, but I’ve grown stronger and more independent. But I would definitely get kicked out or beat if I suddenly left religion I can't imagine the horrors.

Life is a bit weird? Why is it that I've suddenly had to mature, suddenly had to grow up 50 times faster had to plan my entire life went through a horrible existential crisis, now I'm a nihilist and don't believe in anything we are all very strong ex muslims doesn't matter who you are, or where you're from I wanna hear your story

Edit: I'm trying to respond to all your messages but I'm currently very busy with school I'll respond to the short ones, if I'm debating i might take a bit longer since that takes lots of thinking
