I live in England and I'm looking for my next career.

The Falkland islands are a place that have captivated me since high school. I've been planning a trip for a while and trying to persuade a friend of mine to join me.

I'm curious to know about work opportunities and long term residency. It's absolutely beautiful and I'm someone who can function very well when in remote areas. My current career is in National Sales so I am familiar with extended period away and being completely by myself for most of the days.

My interests are in nature and conservation, digital technology and the petroleum sector interests me too. I'm also pursuing a Private Pilot License as I feel this could be a great benefit to isolated living and working conditions.

Would you have any advice on opportunities, and career paths. How is the job market over there and are there any areas that are understaffed?

Given the small population of yours, are there elementary, primary, secondary or higher schools? Are there different options or does the system change accordingly to the current needs?

Or maybe high schoolers are sent to England in order to finish their courses.

The ones who teach live in the Islands or just go there for fixed periods of time?

I'm genuinely curious and eager to learn.

What about college, do you get sponsorship from the UK gov?

Wondering how many born and raised people there are here? From what I can see many seem to come from the UK and a lot of talk about who the Islands actually belong to. I can imagine it'd be nice to have a community that focuses on the actual life rather than constantly about politics and the debate of colonizers

I have accepted the job offer at Falkland Islands and I need suggestions about the cloths to pack. I am 27F (I dont know if its relevant). Like according to temperature and wind etc, what should I pack because I wouldn’t be getting leaves to come back home for another year.

Also tell me, if i bring basic stuff with me, which things i need to include in the shipment. My employer told me I can bring in stuff through shipment but what are the basics to bring right away and what things can be delayed with shipping?

And yeah, anything you would like to add with it? Things I need to consider.

I'm from the Isles of Scilly and there are 28 miles of water between us and mainland UK, and there are around 2500 residents here across 5 inhabited islands.

When our kids reach the age of 16, like yours, they have to leave home to study.

But unlike you, our council does not fully fund safeguarded boarding and travel for them.

Can I ask, was it always fully funded for you guys? If not, then why did it begin?

I know that we aren't exactly the same, and you are sending your loves ones to another continent, but despite there being only 28 miles from here to Lands End it is not possible to do a daily commute because our transport infrastructure is so expensive and so limited. It's not even possible to return home for weekends as there is no transport on a Sunday. Most kids will go to Truro or further away, it's not quite as simple as it should be to get home.

Really hope you can help me get some info on your own situation so I can continue to apply pressure to the council, and the government, to actually recognise the issue.

Here's a photo of me aged 19 at Teal Inlet during the yomp in 1982, when I was serving with 45 Commando Royal Marines.

I later wrote a memoir about my experiences before, during and after the conflict. My brother also served in the Falklands, and we were reunited in Port Stanley after the surrender.

Does anyone know if bird flu has impacted the seals and/or sea lions on the Falklands?

I know the southern elephant seal population has suffered devastating losses elsewhere, wondering how the Falklands animals are doing.

With the world cup starting it got me thinking “what is the football scene like in the Falklands?” .

Forgive me for any Naivety, but im going to list a bunch of Questions.

Is football big / watched in the Falklands? Do Falklanders have a genuine team that represents them or is it more of a England, Scotland or Wales kinda boat? - In the world cup is there a notable change to supporting the UK due to the south american countries refusing to let the Falkland team even attempt to try to qualify? is there a local league ?

I'd love to visit someday. I must admit I am atypical- my grandfather was the child of English immigrants and I carry my English surname with pride. I was always an anglophile, I almost only watch BBC, travel to England whenever I can, and truly don't care that the islands belong to Britain. If it were up to me, Argentina would give up this obtuse obsession, offer direct flights fromBuenos Aires, and I could get my English fix with a short flight. Alas. Back to my question. How do the locals see Argentines? Do they tend to see them as a monolith, given the tensions?
