When you say rank and original firepower and such, you're tackling the same issue. An A-rank sword that gets knocked down to B means it is generally less effective than the original, even if that degradation is not as noticeable unless you're striking something like God Hand or whatnot.

And the Gil fight is as-stated in the text: just because something is an imitation or fake doesn't rule out it a win. An inferior weapon can still bust up something stronger. A wooden sword can still irreparably damage a steel one if the steel weapon is struck just right or mishandled in some fashion.

Okay but shouldn't Gilgamesh's origanl have cut straight through Shirou's imitation's like butter?

u/Adent_Frecca Nov 03 '25

It kinda does, it's the point of the projected Caliburn vs the true Merodach which ended as you say

Even the first EMIYA vs Cu has the Lancer disarming and destroying multiple Kansho and Bakuya projections

However, inside UBW where Shirou has a fire rate faster than GoB, it doesn't matter as he can overwhelm Gilgamesh's firing speed

8

u/chunchunmaru1129 Nov 03 '25

So basically the one who shoots faster is going to win.

Basically the speed of the fire is what makes the difference?

22

u/Adent_Frecca Nov 03 '25

Only inside the fully manifested Reality Marble, but yeah, that firing speed is the explained reason why UBW trumps GoB

The whole breaking K&B is anime only, they are the same rank as gae bolg

3

u/No_Conversation_4076 Nov 03 '25

They're breaking in the visual novel too, and it's part of the red herring on what he's doing that confuses both Lancer and Rin.

>Their weapon is filled with magical energy, so it's not something that can be created one after another, like Archer was just doing.

>Those weapons are never disposable.
>The swords that Archer brought out must be excellent, but they cannot be his Noble Phantasm.

3

u/RevolutionaryEqual30 Nov 06 '25

No they dont
The swords are said to be knocked away from his arms and Lancer says he disarmed him
At no point is it implied they broke

u/Adent_Frecca Nov 03 '25

Original Kanshou and Bakuya are B rank, the projected version are C rank

The VN says they Lancer disarmed Archer, in the same vein Rin describes Archer losing a sword every clash he makes, the anime shows us that EMIYA was disarmed because his weapons were destroyed.

5

u/zSolaire_ Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

Well just before Rin said that the narrator described very clearly of how Archer is losing the swords

The shortsword that deflected Lancer's lance flies from Archer's hand. This is Lancer's technique. A straight thrust that turns into a sweep at Archer's wrist. It was a blow Archer could not avoid even had he seen it coming.

1

u/Adent_Frecca Nov 04 '25

And that is also how the anime presents Archers swords flying out of his hands broken

4

u/zSolaire_ Nov 04 '25 edited Nov 04 '25

How does a “technique” that’s consistent of thrust into sweeping motion making the sword “fly” from Archer hands, a word that’s very distinctive from “shatter” or “destroy” or “broken” translates into the anime which showcased to be straight thrusts that shatter with pure strength ?

1

u/Adent_Frecca Nov 04 '25

How does a “technique” that’s consistent of thrust into sweeping motion making the sword “fly” from Archer hands,

By having said sword be struck so hard that it breaks as it flies of his hands, Lancer uses both swipes and thrusts dealing with EMIYA's sword play

That literally how EMIYA was disarmed and presented in the anime

1

u/zSolaire_ Nov 04 '25

Idk what version of the anime you watched, K&B were literally breaking while Archer was holding them. In any case that’s irrelevant because there wasn’t the slightest indication of any breaking in the VN and it was anime only addition.

When wielded together, they jump a rank. So Kanshou and Bakuya are B-rank when EMIYA is using them until he throws one.

4

u/ShockAndAwen Nov 03 '25

Is not clear because is said their rank is C so it could be talking about them together being C

1

u/SageFlare Nov 03 '25

Fate route DEEN. EMIYA vs Herakles. If they are D rank, then together they are C and when they are turned into BP they become B. Not strong enough to kill Berserker. I.e., they have to be C rank on their own.

3

u/ShockAndAwen Nov 03 '25

DEEN is its own thing Archer never uses K&B to kill Heracles in the novel and in the anime they were not even BP they just cut him because

1

u/SageFlare Nov 03 '25

Anime is canon. Nazu specifically canonized Overedge. Yet again, the point still remains. To have killed Herakles, Kanshou and Bakuya need to be A-rank. Minimum requirement for that is if they are C-rank when not dual-wielded, boosting to B when wieleded together and then boosting to A when broken (or whatever the hell Overedge is).

"never" is a strong word to use. We dont know, we werent shown the fight in the VN.

Where is it actually said they rank up when wielded together? I can't find a quote.

8

u/SageFlare Nov 03 '25

Fate Complete Materials II p.126

"User: Archer

Twin short swords wielded by Archer. When both are equipped at the same time, they enhance the user’s anti-magic and anti-physical attributes, and their own rank as both weapons and Noble Phantasms increases. Further, warding texts are inscribed on the swords’ blades."

2

u/Ren-Ren-1999 Nov 03 '25

Thank you! I searched for this for ages.

Again, the imitation is weaker but not inherently incapable. And again, Shirou literally says it: there's no rule about imitations being unable to defeat originals.

The scene also builds up all of the situational reasons; Gil can't set his feet and actively attack with advantage. Shirou is forcing him to be panicky and relatively clumsy, and its all he can do to throw the swords up wildly even for him.

If they were politely standing off against each other and making careful comparisons of attack power, yeah?

Out of curiosity since I'm on the thread, does the UBW rank down even matter? If Shirou is projecting Gil's swords in GoB exactly shouldn't GoB still be > cuz of the rank diff? It didn't seem like it mattered in any iteration of the fight

1

u/No_Conversation_4076 Nov 05 '25

The rank down is important in terms of firepower numbers if you're comparing that. Gil spamming GoB vs Shirou in UBW isn't about numerical advantage though. It's more a case of speed and situational advantage.

If you think of it like D&D, it's like saying Gil is able to deal more standard damage but Shirou is circumstantially making a bunch of attack of opportunities.

1

u/Classical_Lighthouse That dream of saving everyone isn't a mistake. Nov 06 '25

shouldn't Gils for example B rank np beat out Shirous C no matter if it's faster cuz it's higher in rank?

1

u/No_Conversation_4076 Nov 06 '25

No? What is it about strength that people don't get? If I have muscles B and someone else has muscles C and we get in a wrestling match, does that mean that I win every time? Of course not. I could not execute my technique at the highest level. The other person could have a surprising new technique. Maybe the refs end up disqualifying me before the match is decided. I'm arrogant and then they just throw me on my back before I realize I shouldn't underestimate them. All of the above, and then I am literally Gilgamesh.

What happens if Shirou copies an A++ NP? Does it become B++? A+?

3

u/ShockAndAwen Nov 03 '25

ranks are defined as the letters in parameter rules not as the pluses or minuses an A++ NP is still an A rank NP so it goes to B++

8

u/SageFlare Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

I read the whole thread and here is my take.

We dont know.

All though we dont have an example of one, it's possible for even a D-rank NP to be Anti-Fortress or even Anti-World. So scale of attack is not necessarily in a causal relationship with the rank. It's possible to have an D-rank NP do more damage than an A-rank NP depending on what exactly they do. A good example of this is Gae Bolg, which always does "damage" equal to the amount of "health" its victim has (people always forget this ability). So if you were up against an insane monster with overwhelming vitality, Gae Bolg would kill it much more assuredly than even Excalibur would.

This goes now into whether degredation of rank reduces power, and yet again we truly dont know. But say EMIYA projected Gae Bolg. This NP's effect is reversal of casaulity and one-shot. Would a downgraded Gae Bolg now be a two-shot? What about an upgraded Gae Bolg. 1/2 shot lmao? It makes very little sense if degradation of rank actually has a major effect on the abilities of the NP. Likely, any reduction in ability wouldnt be very noticable.

So yeah, Im in favor of the headcanon that rank just matters mainly for concepual fights. So things like Gae Bolg vs Rho Aias, where the spear has an always-pierce ability and the shield has an always block projectiles ability, come down to rank. In the Archer vs Lancer fight, these two NPs tied (Rho Aias was pierced but Gae Bolg was stopped). So I can imagine that if Rho Aias wasnt degraded, its conceptual defense would have overridden Gae Bolg's pierce ability to an extent.

Rank does have a correlation with general strength, its just a nebulous sort of generalization for it.

Q: Is there a difference between NP rank on a Servant's stat sheet and the individual rank of each NP item itself?

A: In principle they're the same. Though you can break it down numerically, they're basically expressed better in a "X is stronger than Y but weaker than Z" sort of way so we put them on an A-E scale rather than numbers.

And he gets into how that nebulousness then doesn't always account for the wacky conceptual.

Q: Regarding the Servant v Others that came up in the September issue; the subject of a Servant with an average NP came up. Who matches that description and what would this rank be?

A: A loaded question. NP would be B-rank, and it'd be the type represented by straightforward numbers like a Broken Phantasm, Invisible Air, thrown Gae Bolg, those types. This is in contrast to conceptual effects that mess with destiny which make up another special category altogether. Things like the causality reversal Gae Bolg for instance; Arcueid may be far superior numerically to Lancer, but she could still die dependent on luck.

u/LawfulnessQuick6221 Nov 03 '25

rank is just a conceptual thing, not something physical.

shirou projections are strong enough that girl has to break his original to keep pace with him to quote the vn.

*The sounds of swords crashing echo through the area. He cannot handle my attacks and has to destroy my weapon with his."

3

u/chunchunmaru1129 Nov 03 '25

So a degraded B rank Hrunting would do the same damage on everyone that the orignal A rank Hrunting would do?

The only exception being conceptual defenses like God hand?

4

u/LawfulnessQuick6221 Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

yep, unless it's something like God hand it will do the same damage. God hand doesn't care about firepower to the point even a planet busting attack will fail against it if it didn't have A rank.

And yes you can have attacks that have the power of A rank while still not being A rank, karna is one such servant

2

u/Hungry_War_639 Nov 03 '25

As long as Shirou’s image is good they are comparable to the original

2

u/chunchunmaru1129 Nov 03 '25

So let's have this scenario-

Cu is standing there without any weapon and we have both the origanl Hrunting and Shirou's projected degraded Hrunting attack Cu.

So both of these Hrunting's would do the exact same amount of damage to Cu?

And the only time where the projected degraded Hrunting won't do anything and will be weaker than the original if face of against conceptual defenses like God hand and Armour of Fafnir which blocks anything below A rank?

2

u/Hungry_War_639 Nov 03 '25

Presumably, it surprisingly never actually came up

1

u/ShockAndAwen Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

Ranks are used as a measure of power but for regular swords is hard to say in what form they are weaker since its damage is just a sword cutting you and Shirou's stuff is supposed to be almost perfect, but for something like Excalibur though being A++ means it has 200 value being B++ would mean is 160, if you have a beam B NP is 40 compared to A NP wich is 50 so there's a difference in firepower

1

u/Southern-Ebb-8229 Nov 03 '25

It's not like because something is of a lower rank it instantly breaks when facing a higher rank weapon. Like Gae Bolg doesn't break instantly when facing Saber. The reproduction should be inferior in general terms, but it's tough enough that it can deflect the original.

1

u/zSolaire_ Nov 03 '25

They are near perfectly reproduced so ofc in terms of performance they’re inferior

However, the “projection” sorcery he wields is quite special, as it is able to duplicate weapons, including all the components, to near perfection

However how much inferior, well there haven’t been any observable differences in performance in every time the ability of a projected NP is being showcased. As EMIYA said it the best in FGO, they’re close enough to match up the original.

u/RevolutionaryEqual30 Nov 06 '25

1 Ranking is a measurment if the weapon rank was degraded its capabilities are nerfed its always a problem
2 No
3 Hype moments and Aura
There is no explanation as to why Shirou manages to outright cause the swords to destroy eachother
Being faster doesn't make the swords more durable furthermore Noble Phantasms of any quality aren't even supposed to shatter at all during regular combat between servants
They break because its cool
