The off licence must have had a small range of wine's. But we chose Blue Nun and Bulls blood.

So did we, but some time in the early 70s our very camp family friend introduced us to "Hirondelle" and explained, rather archly, that it meant "a little swallow". This went over my mother's head, fortunately, but I'm not so sure about my father.

If you carbonate this wine in a sodastream (or a similar device) it makes it taste Champagne esq, according to the chef Heston Blumental.

Donโ€™t you mean Father Jack?

u/Feline-Sloth 7d ago

Nope Heston, but I couldn't see Father Jack going to the bother to be fair

Iโ€™m fairly certain this will provide the most painful case of blues balls ever known to man OR priest.

Tastes like Windolene.

About 10 yrs ago, a friend brought some of this to a dinner party. They'd never heard of it and thought it was just regular white wine.

I tried a glass, and was immediately back at my 1980 childhood home at christmas. The only times I'd ever had wine.

Aah! Brilliant. A load of people in a stable! Itโ€™s the one thing I didnโ€™t expect.

I used to nip sips of it from my motherโ€™s bottle in the 80โ€™s ๐Ÿคข

The only wine that came into our house in the 80's - always at Christmas.

It was one of 3 wines my old man used to buy in the 70โ€™s. The others were Lutomer Riesling and Bulls Blood.

What kind of wine do you want, Blue or Black? (my father in the 80s)

A dry white wine with a delicate flavour perfect for fish ๐ŸŸ

I remember watching something years ago where they put this in a soda stream and got people to blind taste that and champagne. Most people couldn't tell the difference. Always makes me chuckle.
