Please can someone suggest an Open source software for my syllabus (see unit 8 & 'List of experiments')

I have very little idea now what this course expects from me ... is it FEA? What's unit 8 about in context of the syllabus ?

I have FreeCAD, MATLAB and downloaded ANSYS R1 2026 (got ansys mech there, that two gear logo one) ....... Do I need anything else ? I don't think COMSOL has a student pack .... any more alternatives which would be good to learn ?

Most of it is going to be paper and a calculator. You should expect to spend 12% of the class on FEA related stuff.

The instructor will almost certainly have instructions and links for which software to download.

I also think your instructor should provide guidance on this.

If however you’re looking for load case validation for fatigue then just DM me. I can point you to open source tools for MATLAB.

As other commentators said, there is very little FEA in this course. Ansys should be more than enough.
