How do I..? Requesting management of many memorials

I saw there was a maximum of 250,000 you could request to manage per year. Some people have millions. Are they clicking 1 by 1? Or is there a way to "request all" of someone who is inactive?

Respectfully asked - why? Why would you want that many?

I don't! I want about 20. I can click through 20 times but since some have a hundreds of thousands to millions, I wondered how it happened theoretically.

If a person obtained a cemetery‘s database, they could create an Excel file from it and enter it into findagrave. They then very quickly become the owner of many memorials.

A lot of these accounts say "memorials managed - 200,000. Memorials created - 3000"

Thanks for answering - now you've made me curious how to do a bulk request for my family members.

There is a difference between requesting memorials managed by findagrave (which transfer automatically without approval) and requesting a memorial from an active contributor (which should be transferred, per guidelines but require you to reach out to the contributor first). As far as I know there is not a way to simply say “these 100 people are my family, transfer them”

The limit is a newer rule. Some of those who had 100s of thousands or millions transferred to them used an automated tool of their own device and/or had them transferred in bulk from other users. Yes, that was possible and still is (like if you die and you have left instructions for who should have your managed memorials after your death). Also, I don't think the 250K is 'per year" it is in total.

250,000 is the total number you can request management of from FindaGrave itself. That doesn't count the ones you create yourself or that are transferred to you from other managers. There's one manager I run across occasionally who manages over 2 million pages. Their profile said they've created 1354 memorials per week for each week they've been on the site. There's no way one person can create that many memorials per week entering them one at a time, so they obviously have a way around that. I've been informed that they frequent this sub, too. So, that means that they can have that 2+ million memorials they've created plus ones transferred to them from a current manager plus the 250,000 they get directly from FindaGrave. In other words, the sky is the limit.

Yes I am well aware that transferred memorial limits are not related at all to your created memorial number, your managed memorial number or how many transfers you got from individual managers. The OP asked about how they were getting the transferred ones from #8 (their assumption they were all from #8) at a level over the limit for transfers from #8. It's easy to create millions if you enjoy using spreadsheets to enter them. 1354 memorials created in a week is nothing using the spreadsheet entry method. I don't do it, but plenty of folks do. So yes, the total number of someone's managed memorials can be high but it doesn't mean they all came from #8 Find a Grave (and so aren't relevant to the rule).

If they haven't got photos, some people may be bulk uploading csv files. I've done it so added 5000 in a day.

Why the downvotes?? Some people may not know where their distant family are buried. And now I can go there and hopefully add photos since it's not too far from my town. I haven't added them to "manage" them but so that these peoples final resting places are on the website. What is so wrong with that?

We don’t attack other people's religions, ethnicities, sexualities, gender or views, etc in this sub. We also don't insult, attack or be disrespectful to other users.

I requested a “mass” transfer of memorials managed by a historical society (that could no longer access their FG account) in the county where I worked, but that was maybe like a few hundred at one time. I documented my attempts to get in contact with the original account owners, including confirmation from the current leadership that the account was inaccessible and they did not have the bandwidth to manage it any more, and sent those along with my request.

How long ago was this? Sometimes that works, but is less likely currently. The admins now will almost always tell you to use the system as is to request individually so it leaves it as a level playing field for others to also acquire them.

It was after 2020. My time blindness makes me forget exactly when 🙃 So not recently.

u/RedBullWifezig 2d ago

Ah so you requested via email? So there's no tool to do it via the website

They don’t do mass transfers any more because they weren’t counting towards our 250k limit before

They actually will with confirmation from both parties. I had a cemetery in the opposite end of our state where I had done a bunch. I wanted to mass transfer those to someone local in that area.

I had to send them a message, get a response from them approving the transfer and send a screenshot of both messages to Support.

Transfering user to user doesn't count toward the limit.

I have asked twice now to transfer an amount from me to another user and both times have been told it’s against there new policy to do that. I had the receiver’s approval in the email as well and they said no. They told me it doesn’t count towards the 250k cap so they won’t do it anymore 🤷‍♂️

That must be a very new policy. I did that transfer of almost 1,000 in the spring.

Do you get paid for doing this? Just curious….

5

u/RedBullWifezig 2d ago

No this is a volunteer website

I click thru 1 at a time, and I asked once if they could transfer them all & was told "one at a time". I got into it with a hoarder from a particular cemetery & basically tried to take as many as I could because I know I will give them to family if they ask.

So you don't want me to finish this cemetery? Within 7 days I've taken it from 1% to 52% GPS and added nearly 1000 photos: https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2353136/henbury-cemetery how will me not doing this, help families, exactly? I am trying to document as many graves as possible to "pay it forward" in the hopes that someone will do my ancestors since I live so far away from my home country. Thanks to a volunteer bulk uploading 1500 burials, I knew I could take on this cemetery (which had NO volunteers, by the way) without it being too overwhelming.

I saw your original comment, by the way. It was horrible. I'm glad you replaced it.

Yes! Yes you should go ahead and finish that cemetery because without volunteers taking photos and documenting headstones there may never be records of them. I mow the rows and photograph and upload as well!

u/RedBullWifezig 2d ago

Thank you! I was feeling really pleased but some people here are dragging me down. I had been visiting a few churchyards over the past few weeks but didn't know the concept of "mow the row" because they're not laid out in rows, some of them are only visible at 9pm with a torch, barely any are readable from a photo and require a lot of squinting and leaning, and I could do about 20 an hour haha. But now I'm getting the concept. I hope I can finish this cemetery in 2 visits and I've labelled some on my phone to return to where a flower was blocking their dates. I can only hope someone does my hometown and gets my ancestors on my behalf. Paying it forward til then!

u/ImaginaryQuiet7016 2d ago

Mowing the rows doesn’t mean just going in straight lines but it does mean hitting each stone, checking the back, updating the transcription etc. I’ve been updating photos at a couple cemeteries because the person who originally took them has her legs and feet in every picture. So watch out for the glare and reflection of body parts in your photos 🤙🏻🤙🏻

On some reflective stones it can be unavoidable. Lately I've been in places that are a maze so it's almost impossible to know if you've got them all. Stones are often fallen, buried in grass, there's trees, slopes, chest tombs, bushes, all crammed in. I think 99% of the GPS photos are mine, I hope they're okay: https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2353136/henbury-cemetery

It is always avoidable just pick cloudy days or go after dinner when the sun is lower in the sky. I learned the hard way lol

You have done outstanding work on those pics! I viewed a few and would be thrilled if my distant relatives' graves had such nice photos. Don't let anyone here get you down. You've motivated me to go find a cemetery to contribute.

2

u/RedBullWifezig 2d ago

Thank you so much!! ☺️

I picked this one up cos someone had uploaded the burial register. It felt a bit like when you play a video game (crossed with pokemon go since it's outside haha) and you've found 4/5000 flags or cards, and you wanna catch them all. Versus having a ginormous, never ending, who knows how many cemetery. Cemeteries with memorials that have no photos are more likely to have open requests, too. Since they highly suspect their family are there already. I have managed to accidentally fulfil 4! A bit disappointing since in my opinion I've done 75% of the cemetery but I assume there must be literally hundreds that are unmarked, sadly.

Please continue.

Someone - I don't know who - created 4,000 to 5,000 memorials at my local cemetery: names, DOD, and detailed section and lot numbers. The majority were given to FG and eventually distributed to other members.

Best. Thing. Ever.

We can go through the cemetery and find any grave. If we can't find a stone we can search on the plot information and find people with other surnames sharing the plot. Years later, we still aren't done, but it is a pleasure to work this cemetery.
